i was out friday night with a few of the friends i have made since leaving jws behind, when lo and behold, it turns out that one of their boyfriends was an exjw too!

i was excited at first, as i had not yet met someone who was exjw and gay in the flesh until now.

however, my excitement was shortlived.

I will second, or third, or fourth or whatever ... that you give him Crisis of Conscience as a gift.

Ray's tone in that book is very loving and concerned ... its a great book. My sister was in a kind of similar situation - disfellowshipped, but still believed it was the truth ... though she did have some doubts too. I recommended she read CoC and now she is free, and her mental illness is a thousand times better.

Same thing with my father. CoC set him free too. And I personally think it is the best book to read, because Ray lets you out gently, he doesn't send you into a fiery rage against the org and everyone in it - you come out with more love and a level head. Hopefully it can do the same for your new acquaintance, and hopefully new friend.

You know, every now and then I read something from the Watchtower org. And often its difficult to wrong them - their logic is usually quite tight, scriptural references too. In fact, I do think that JWs follow Paul's version of christianity rather closely. Pity Paul changed it so much from what Jesus started.

But this scan reminded me just how poor they really are. Its going to be easy to blow this one apart with my wife. All we have to do is look up 1 Cor 8:8. And they dont answer the question that LEAPS to the mind of the un-brainwashed. If blood is to be respected because the life is in it (the fleshly life, that is - JWs dont believe the 'soul' is a spiritual entity that leaves the body), then what is more important - the LIFE, or the blood that sustains life and is a SYMBOL of it? The actual thing, or the symbol - which is more important?

JW: "Because I respect LIFE, I am going to refuse LIFE-SAVING treatment."

Also, sure, every cell that makes up blood is required for life - but so is every cell that makes up the intestinal tract. Can we not eat tripe?

One Reason Why I Worship the God of the Bible

while this may be construed as a rebuttal to nvr's thread re: why i post about atheism, that is not my intent.. it is my intent, however, to show how i developed a belief in and love for the god of the bible.. my paternal grandfather, who died before i was born, was a baptist preacher, so you could say i cut my teeth on the bible.

i loved having it read to me, and once i learned how, reading it for myself.

i'm convinced that spirituality runs deep in my blood.. i've always had such a strong sense of right and wrong that injustices make me literally sick.

After being born again, the spirit of God really just evened me out. Little by little, I became the kind of man I always wanted to be....for real and not just a put on.

That's great Perry, it does feel really good to get than balance again. I feel the same way - I felt being a witness, I was unable to be human. I remember, for instance, feeling really sorry for the people devasted by the tsunami by Sumatra, but in the cong I was in, this letter came from the local branch saying that the brothers were ok, and as luck would have it, most were inland at an assembly or something like that, so weren't harmed. And in my mind I was screaming, thinking, what about all the other PEOPLE who have lost their children, mothers, fathers etc??!? And the society recommended against donating to Red Cross or other charities, and instead to donate to the society, and they would use the money as they saw fit!!!!! Were they going to launch a full scale relief effort to help the worldly people? Hell no! This was when I was still a 100% JW ministerial servant.

But since I've left, I felt that sort of feeling you describe. The only difference is I'm basically atheist. I'm not dogmatic about anything, I won't even try to insist that their IS no god, I just dont see enough reason to believe in the god of the bible, the ancient greeks, romans, hindus etc. But I have became much more the man I always wanted to be. I am a better father and husband than I used to be ... by a long shot. I'm still hounded by weird feelings when it comes to charities, because I never used to donate as a JW - only to the MT24:14 box at the hall. But the other day I donated to the childrens kidney foundation and it felt so right.

what other methods of discipline do you use?

It's been my observation that parents who don't spank their kids end up with out of control f*cked up kids.

I know at least in New Zealand, they made it illegal to spank, but didn't give parents any training or advice on how else to discipline their kids. So there are all these parents who were spanked when they were kids, and dont know any other way ... but aren't allowed to spank their kids, so basically their children go completely undisciplined.

We reserve spanking for incredibly serious crimes (our kids are under 7) ... like biting or attempted drowning etc. But the rest of the times, there's the 'naughty mat' which we learned from Supernanny Jo - and its blimmin effective ... as well as the 'good boy' chart and just playing with them and giving them attention - the Supernanny show taught me a lot about parenting.

That said, I dont begrudge parents who spank their kids - its a practice that stretches back into antiquity - we can't expect to all of a sudden change human society. If I had it my way, I'd wave a magic wand over humanity and make everyone into atheist secular humanists who didn't spank their kids. But it just doesn't work that way ... maybe in another thousand years.

Sinus problems

i have had sinus problems my entire life, recently a friend told me about this sinu-cleanse thing, its a sinus cleansing treatment that you can get at cvs pharmacy, its pretty cool, its a little pot that you mix warm water with saline solution and put in one nostral and it drains out the other, the first time i used it i had a bad sinus head ache and thought well i will give this thing a try, so i mixed it up and did the treatment, blood clots and pink then red water started coming out of my nose, and after i noticed my headache was gone, i could breath great, and felt a lot less pressure in my head.

this thing is pretty awesome!

just thought i share with all of you.. sorry if its a bit gross.

Aw come on, its not so bad - its actually kinda nice once you get over the initial hurdles ...

It's sure a lot better than antibiotics! I just did a pot an hour ago, and my nose feels so much clearer!!!

And neti pot+Iphone/Treo = Nerd.

BTW, I have a Treo too. DOH.

Probably the biggest reason is you happened to be raised in the western world. If you were born and raised in Hindustan (India), you would see the bible as you probably now see the Bhagavad Gita.

Your thread would be entitled "One Reason I Worship Krishna of The Gita"

It is a fact that this newsgroup is heavily westernised. There is a distint lack of threads about ex-witnesses who are now Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs etc.

I got a neti pot from healthandyoga.com - the stainless steel one. It is great - whenever I get a cold, I tend to get a secondary infection and be blocked up for months afterwards. Now I use the neti pot and get rid of it in a week or so.

Its always difficult at first though, cos if you're really clogged up, the water can't flow through. It takes lots of patience ... but after a day or two of trying, it will start to loosen up enough to get a bit of water actually going through.

I must admit, it feels really great to rinse out all the crud that is up there - when you get some out its like a small victory against the germs! Go Green!!!!!

i don't call them often enough, or i make an effort in the beginning and then i let it slide.

Explain the meaning of your nic GoddessRachel ... I'm currently intrigued by the whole 'divine feminine' thing (not from reading DaVinci Code specifically, but I guess that book did help create more global awareness of it). Did you just make it up for fun, or does it have greater meaning to you?

glad to hear you're trying to remain upbuilding even after learning about the org. some people are bitter, but then, some people have had really bad experiences in the org.

I have found real truth to be very elusive. I wouldn't call myself atheist, nor christian, nor muslim, nor hindu, nor anything else. The one thing I have found truly satisfying is NOT having to 'subscribe' to any one philosophy or doctrine. I love many of Jesus' teachings, but not all. Same goes for most religions, and even secular humanism (most/all of whom are atheists/agnostics).

Not trying to bash the Christians here, but please, allow a person some space before you try and make them believe in Jesus the way you do.
