Jehovah's Witnesses dismayed by new magazine format from Watchtower Society.
by Balaamsass inwow.
i was surprised this week by calls from active jws complaining about the new magazine format, and more begging for money from the platform.. frankly i was surprized by this reaction since this is old news to jwn members.
i guess actually shuffling to the bookroom and grabbing the new "awake tracts" minus the inside cover forward ...awakened many sleepy, catatonic, bored jws who never read the things or go on the internet anyway.. any feedback from other areas?.

WT Elders school: Look how cute that kindly old elder is! Too bad the Talmud says we have to stone our victim anyway
by sir82 inmore haphazard thougths on the recently concluded elder school..... a big chunk of time was spent on a video which traced a judicial case, all the way from the confession to the elders through the decision to disfellowship the guy.. here is a very brief synopsis of the video:.
tearful late-teen or early-20's publisher confesses to 2 elders that he committed fornication with a "worldly girl" who is now preganant and wants to marry him.
the elders give him some "homework" to do prior to his judcial committee - read psalm 51 and an old wt article.

A Watchtower article in the 1950s stated that the Society does not provide a Talmud covering every situation. Unfortunately over the decades since, the Society has been in fact compiling a Talmud, as referenced in Sir82’s subject line.
The downside for the Society in spoon-feeding instructions via video presentation to the elders is that it then creates a dependency for similar direction on every conceivable issue. The increased liability (greater opportunity for error) that this creates along with the time and resources to attempt something like this would be so costly as to be prohibitive.
Having now gone down this path, it will be fascinating to see where it leads.

Well, Ann, I got caught up in the speculation, hence my comments. I think you are right regarding settlement.

question re: conti case appeal/ legal question
by drewcoul inthis may have been answered before, but i would like to know if the appeal basically re-tries the case or if the wt has to argue that the original trial wasn't conducted properly.
.
in other words, is an appeal in a civil trial like this basically starting from scratch, or is it a trial concerning alleged errors in the first trial.. (i'm on heavy duty medication and having a little trouble articulating my question.

Also, the appellate court has the option of remanding the case back to the lower court to resolve any issues it finds, depending on the nature of those issues. It's not just a matter of overturning the case versus letting the judgment stand.

Re Candace's accepting a settlement offer to compensate Rick Simons, I think 144,001 has layed out the facts pretty well. Of course all of this is speculation, but if Mr. Simons is the advocate he appears to be and his firm is in healthy financial shape, he might possibly stay the course and advise Candace not to settle. The risk is to, in effect, have represented Candace pro bono. The reward is to garner the reputation for himself and his firm of being vigorous advocates, fighting for what is right. Even if the case is overturned on appeal, whatever is learned in the appeal process can be applied in the representation of future clients that are in a similar situation to Candace. I really hope Candace, Mr. Simons and his firm are able to stay the course. However, whatever happens, as 144,001 has already stated, any decision they make deserves respect.

For Ethos: The Basis of Christian Unity

In case Ethos reads this: What you perceive as Christian unity is in reality enforced uniformity. Having served as an elder for 26 years I can tell you that, in reality, there are many different approaches that publishers take to the Witness religion. You have the whole range between secretly disobedient to agressively beyond obedient, and everything in between. The majority go through the same prescribed motions (i.e., meetings, field service, conventions), giving the appearance of unity. However, many hold in contempt others in the religion who do not take the same approach that they do--a far cry from the love among themselves that Jesus said would identify his true followers.

Apognophos, to what are you referring when you say, "After all, 1919 is a concrete date where something actually happened with respect to the Witness organization . . ."?

“The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.” (Isaiah 28:20 NIV)
In Chapter 10 of Crisis of Conscience, Raymond Franz cited the above passage as a subheading to that chapter. He applied it to the Watch Tower Society’s manipulating Scripture to fit its theology, and the uncomfortable position in which it places itself by doing so. A secular quote that describes the same situation is Sir Walter Scott’s:
“ Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!”In the late 1800s, when the Watch Tower Society began marketing the parable of “the faithful and discreet slave” (the “Slave”) as a prophecy, an interpretation had to be devised that would: (1) be prophetic; and (2) point to the prophecy’s fulfillment within the Watch Tower community.
The identity of the “Slave” has been revised from time to time as the leadership of the Watch Tower community has changed. The most recent revision is quite a departure from the last revision.
Formerly, it was published that since the master’s leaving in 33 CE, there has always been a remnant of anointed Christians to act as the “Slave” in caring for the master’s household during his absence. The revised identity of the “Slave” as a small group of anointed brothers at Watch Tower world headquarters, working together as a governing body, from 1919 CE to the present, leaves the master’s household uncared-for in the centuries between 33 CE and 1919 CE. By design, this revised interpretation bolsters the exclusivity and importance of today’s leadership in the Watch Tower community.
While this most recent revision may not seem problematic so long as the rank and file accept it, it creates a potentially larger problem: it is now easier to trace how the leadership has distorted Jesus’ parable to establish, define and maintain its authority.
It can only be speculated as to what further revisions may be needed going forward, but no matter what is devised, the bed will still be too short, the blanket too narrow and the web more tangled.

It is OFFICIAL they want MORE MONEY : NEW ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
by raymond frantz ini just came back from the meeting .although the local announcements have been abolished recently as an item for the second part , an elder came on the platform to announce that the society needs more money and there is a letter on the noticeboard for all the congragation to read to this effect.
although the announcement was read half heartedly (this elder's daughter is an apostate ,it looks like he knows what's going on) the implictions are dramatic .
the society in brief, requests any brother or sister with funds sitting on personal accounts to loan them to the society ,he didn't go into any specifics but i will take a picture of the letter next time and make it available here .. i'm not amazed that they're asking for money ,i thought it will happen sooner or later .what i'm amazed is that 99% of the congragation are oblivious to the financial crisis that the society finds itself these days and the reasons why .i can see the future now .the watchtower will be the fist part of the babylon the great to go down in a blaze of scandals and financial troubles !.

Athough my experience is limited having attended only two congregations, my impression is that very few congregations have three months operating expenses on hand let alone a surplus amount that they can forward to headquarters. In the congregations I attended, operating expenses were pretty much month-to-month.
