"We may conclude from the Pew surveys that the more you're convinced of God's existence, the higher the chance you're intolerant and narrow-minded."
Actually, that's not a good inference from the data. For instance, look at the data on this link:
http://religions.pewforum.org/portraits
If for instance, you look at the Catholic portrait, you'd see that 77% said "There is MORE than one true way to interpret the teachings of my religion" and 79% said "Many religions can lead to eternal life", although 72% are absolutely certain that God exists.
So being convinced of God's existence, by itself, does not make it highly likely that you're intolerant and narrow-minded.
One of the factors that are more likely to cause intolerance is rigid interpretation of religious teachings, not sincere belief, like the Witnesses' 77% saying "There is only ONE true way to interpret the teachings of my religion."
Also, the pew studies clearly state that "most Americans have a non-dogmatic approach to faith. A majority of those who are affiliated with a religion, for instance, do not believe their religion is the only way to salvation. And almost the same number believes that there is more than one true way to interpret the teachings of their religion."

Suicides at Bethel
by CunningMan inin another thread (i forget which), someone mentioned that somebody committed suicide at bethel.
is this true and if so, how often does it happen?
how many people did it?

Yes, it was Richard Wheelock's suicide that I heard about in that other thread. I'm surprised that we don't hear these stories more often, given the tense atmosphere at Bethel.
So much for the happiest place on earth.

I heard a story that the society supposedly had a computer system that could translate any publication (including the bible) into any language desired, by itself. As someone with some knowledge of linguistics, I know that translating any text is impossible without human input, so this story is definitely questionable. Supposedly, this system was bought by IBM for a undisclosed amount, which sounds like another untruth.
Have any former Bethelites heard this story?

I know, it's a morbid topic, but I've never heard of this happening before.

The growing irrelevance of the Watchtower message
by drew sagan inin many ways it appears as if the watchtower movement is slowing down.
a number of changes over the last few years certainly show that the watchtower is in a period of transition.
they have cut back on the number of magazines they print as well as lowered the cost of production by eliminating things like hard backed books.

Wow, there were people committing suicide at Bethel? I wonder how many people have done that over there. Of course, those are the stories that no one hears about.

JW's stole a song from Queen / Freddie Mercury
by Gopher ini used to be the piano player at the kingdom hall (before they made the halls play tapes/cd's).
i had no idea that whenever i played song 72, i was doing a song by queen.
queen's song "lazing on a sunday afternoon" was on their 4th album "night at the opera", the same album that had "bohemian rhapsody".

I don't see how there can be any lawsuit out of this. The Society doesn't make any money off people singing songs.

I made the Charlotte apostafest...unusual in many ways... attn: bikers
by oompa inso lied to wife to go to apostafest meetup....hopped on bike..and btw...i stole her ipod...the little white 4gig one....loaded it up off an employees song list at work...not the best..but ok..tons of johnny cash....made it almost to charlotte on the interstate...rode 95 mph the whole way...do that a lot...not sure why...but was going for a new record to charlotte....and then...the hard rain began....shit.
i am pretty good in storm on a bike fortunately...slowed and followed a ups semi in the right lane...with our drought apparently everyone has forgotten to slow when it rains!
!...27 cars in 2 miles...several were pile ups...but funny...i was sooooo nearly killed or wonderfully maimed.

Yeah, I was late getting to the fest, since I was caught in traffic due the mentioned several-car-pile-up. I saw a long cloud of smoke up in the air. It took me an hour to get past the wreckage. After that I want able to make it with the rest of the group without incident.
I was very surprised to see that oompa was there. He asked me to guess what his screename is. I knew there were many posters I'm sure I didn't want to meet, but I was surprised as to who he was and that I knew his parents.
By far, the most interesting fest, yet.

Tom,
Is the Freddy in your sauna story Freddy Franz? If so, that is the most disturbing story I've yet read. I've only seen the old guy in pictures, but the image of him naked in a towel, moaning for more steam is more than I can bear.
As for Karl Klein, it never ceases to amaze me that this guy made it onto the governing body.
