My elderly great aunt was killed in an auto accident on the way home from service about 15 years ago in Oshkosh, WI. So many of my relatives thought it was such a wonderful way to day "faithful to the end", "Will absolutely be resurrected ", "How beautiful that she was doing Jehovah's will right to the end"

For Those Who Married "in the truth"
by Magwitch inhow did you meet your mate (convention, local hall)?
did you date long?
did you really have anything in common other than the same religion?

It is so nice to hear that some marriages actually are working. As JWs we had so much going against us - so many are married as teenages, many are socially awkward, many feel guilty exploring any sexual position other than the missionary position (and let's keep the whole act under 3 minutes).
Flipper - so sorry your wife wants to turn your daughters against you. That is just tragic. Speaking from experience - I know how unbelievably loyal daughters are to their mothers (with or w/out the cult)

How did you meet your mate (convention, local hall)? Did you date long? Did you really have anything in common other than the same religion? Did you have to have a constant chaperone? If you did not have a chaperone - were you guilty of pre-marriage brazen conduct? Were you desperate to find anyone with a beating heart that was a JW just because you needed sex or wanted to get away from your parents?
I met my ex at pioneer school in '83. We had nothing in common other than having the same religion and being regular pioneers. Our dating consisted of going out in service and a dinner here or there - always under the watchful eye of some spiritual person (lest we become lustful).
I would love to hear your JW dating experience.

Child beating
by Quillsky insome posters here still attend jehovah's witness meetings.
my challenge to you is..... next time you see a parent beating a human child in public at the kingdom hall, when there are two witnesses - you and one other - call 911 or the police, and report the parent by name, for child abuse..

I have always been against any sort of conduct that is not kind (including raising your voice). I can honestly say that I never raised my voice or hit my oldest daughter (she is 19 and perfect in every way). However, when my next daughter came along - she was an absolute imp. All the things that worked on my eldest did not work on her. At times I had to resort to a slap on her little behind and a stern voice. I am happy to say inspite of a spank now and then she did turn out just as well as her older sister. My point being - there are some kids that do not understand a kind, reasoning voice - they need something a little more jolting and there are children that are simply crushed by a frown from their parent. Make parental discipline based on the child, not what we read or hear.

What silly things have you been counselled on or simply been told off for?
by 3Mozzies inso what silly things have you been counselled on or simply been told off for?.
back in my early 20's, i had a pair of comfy old jeans that started to tear in about 3 places on the leg.
it was the fashion at the time so not only did they feel great to wear, they also looked 'in', not that i cared for that, but it was a bonus .

Freakonomics and the drop in the crime rate
by Damocles inwe recently watched the movie 'freakonomics' based on the book of the same name and it posited some pretty scandalous ideas among the less so.
on the less scandalous side, name choice has little to do with success except that a mother who names you some wierd thing has other problems that surely will affect you.
its not the name its the parents who would give you such a name.. on the provocative side, they note that the slide in crime rate across the country corresponds with the time period that abortion has been legal.

I read the book a couple of years ago and saw the movie this month. I loved both and thought there were some valid points.

" i mean like getting a tattoo, going to a club with friends, celebrating a holiday or such?.

Do you consider yourself to be quiet or outgoing?
by mrsjones5 insomething someone said on one of the popularity topics got me to wondering who on the board is quiet and who are the outgoing ones in real life.
i'm a quiet person in real life, takes me a while to warm up to folks that i just meet, but if i really like a person my rarely used gift of gab comes out.. how about ya'll?.

I am the 4th of 5 kids. I had to be lively, outgoing, stand on my head and do cartwheels to get my share of attention. I love people, I love conversation and I love my circle of friends. No, I have never been the quiet, calm type. As my brother wisely said about me "Peace and tranquility leave the room when you enter."

One of my best friends (blond, tall, skinny, beautiful, wealthy) is my age (45) and started dating a 25 year old guy. She was having the time of her life (in bed). I desperately wanted to meet him, which she was hesitant about. Finally, after hearing about this guy for months I met him over drinks. He was an absolute IDIOT! He stood there waving his hands shouting "I feel like a kid in a candy store when I am in Sonya's wine cellar - it is so cool man - it is so awesome - I mean really." I needed about 10 more drinks before I could crack a smile. I left vowing never to envy my friend's younger boy toys again.
The problem so many of us 40 something women have is that men our age let themselves go....Come on middle aged men....Get to the F.... Gym so that we do not have to date the idiot 20 yr olds.

Forgive the Watchtower!
by sabastious ini was abused by my father growing up.
physically and emotionally.. as a entered my adult life i had next to no self esteem, in part because he didn't really attempt to help me get some because i didn't chose the career path that he dreamed for me.. 2 years ago i forgave him.
i let go of the anger that i had for him because i knew that when it was all said and done, he did what he did and i believe that he did his best.
