  JW's and home schooling?

  i don't wish to offend any that are teaching their kids at home, but today i was again confronted by a situation where a jw family were home schooling.

  the kids had little structure to their routine and without putting the mum down, she was no teacher in an academic sense.. the subject is close to my heart because my parents who are witnesses, took my younger brothers out of school and home tutored them.

  the were subjected to below standard education and limited in social skills, particularly as my parents are crap at these skills themselves.. i have grown to hate home schooling except in the situation of medical or logistical situations.. what are your comments good or bad and do you think the option to home school is abused by the witness community?.

  The majority of homeschooled kids have been cheated. They do not get even an average education. But with that being said, I homeschooled my two daughters k-8 and then put them in a public high school. They have flourished socially and academically. My oldest is in a top university with a full 4 year scholarship. My youngest (who is a senior in HS) got into very top schools including some Ivy Leagues. However, she has decided to stay in state. The three of us are extremely close. I did not want to home school, but did it for the husband's sake. Most days we would spend 10 hours a day on schooling and practicing their instruments. In fact we spent so much time on this that we stopped going to meetings (just no time). If I had to do it over, I would absolutely do it the same way.

  some circuit overseers leave lasting impressions either for good or bad.

  others i barely remember.

  three that had the most impact on me were rodricks (that's how it's pronounced, not sure of the spelling), casino and shepherd.

  "Youth book" said 97% of teenagers Masturbate...but none of them are Witnesses! Is this unrealistic?

  "youth" book and "young people ask" admitts that 97% boys and 92% of girls masturbate but of course none of the holy decent witness teenagers would ever do such a thing and earn jehovahs anger!

  how realistic is this?

  97% of the world have t.v's or a telephone!

  The other was a meeting where a woman my age confessed to masturbating herself. As a young elder, I really didn't want to hear that.

  A question about marriage in the organization

  It happens all too often for a variety of reasons

  1. A lot of witness parents will not let their daughters move out of the house until they are married. The young witness brothers cannot support you so they choose someone that can take care of them so they can get the hell out of their parents home

  2. Even if a witness girl can move out she usually has no education and no way of supporting herself, so the older man looks a little more appealing again.

  3. Witnesses have this illusion that if you marry someone very spiritual you will have a happier marriage (i.e. putting Jehovah 1st and receiving lots of blessings).

  This is a situation that infuriates me….This is what I posted on that original thread last week…..

  As the only parent to two gorgeous teenage girls (ages 17 & 18 who actively date), I would take a shotgun to any man they brought home that was more than a year or two older than them. It is infuriating to hear about these parents that allow (and even encourage) a relationship with a dirty old man. How is it any different than the parents in the Hebrew scriptures that sacrificed their children? Where are these parents' brains?

  Elder uses Congregation Bible Study as an opportunity to ban the movie Avatar

  last night, during the congregation bible study, the conductor (overseer?

  ) used this as a platform to say that the movie avatar is of satan and no christians should see it.. .

  he said that he googled the (original) meaning of the word avatar and it was of hindu religious origin.

  I remember at the Milwaukee Convention in '78 when the speaker announced that it had been reported that some witnesses had seen Saturday Night Fever....People at the convention were gasping in horror...I expected ones to start swooning.

  That Youth Book was the worst - especially the chapter about growing into manhood. Wow, I remember having the family study with my parents, three brothers and sister. I had to read the paragraph about how the man lays very close to his wife for "intercourse". I was 12, and I much preferred my jr high friends description of "intercourse" much better.
