Hi Mkr - There is a book i've read that elaborates on that thought called Toxic Faith by Steve Arterburn; i think he's a counslor or psychologist. It's not anti-religion, just shows the difference between authentic faith that is helpful ,and toxic faith that is damaging. He also has one called More Jesus Less Religion, which looks good too.

The Memorial is a fraud
by truthseeker ini received my memorial invite this weekend.. the title of this tract is "keep doing this in remembrance of me".
those who are used to celebrating mass and partaking of the bread and wine could be forgiven for imagining that the same thing would happen if they accepted an invite to the memorial.. the memorial speaker tells the audience all that jesus has done for us.. this is where the fraud comes in.
he describes two flocks with two different hopes, the great crowd has the earthly hope and those of the little flock have the heavenly hope.. many of those interested ones who accepted the invitation to attend the memorial may already have the heavenly hope, but the memorial talk shuts the "kingdom of heaven" to these ones.. there is also nothing in the scriptures to indicate that jesus only allowed the little flock to partake of the emblems.. and so the audience engages in a kind of pass the parcel game, with the bread and the wine, not knowing who, if anyone is actually going to partake.

I was thinking the same thing when i got my invite at the door yesterday. Instead of "Keep Doing This in Remembrance of Me", it should be more straightforward and say, "Keep watching this in remembrance of Me".
I usually enjoy having some dialogue with the Witnesses when i run into them, and sometimes set up an appointment. BUt yesterday felt like a 'hit and run'. There was only one woman, and she was hardly looking at me directly, and gave her 15 second comment, handing me the invite, and ran back out to the car that was on the street, and had other people in it, and was still moving!
I was also wondering about the Watchtower's view of the dating of the book of Revelation. It is usually dated significantly later than the Pauline epistles, so how did anyone know for years that Paul's letters only apply to the 144,000? Would they just say all believers were in that class during those early years?
I'm going, though. Maybe i can leave some web sites , or Watchtower dollars in the bathroom.
cheers!

Our young Witness friend of my daughter's CANNOT watch Fireproof movie at our house! grr. I know it's not his fault. I even suggested to my daughter that she just fast forward the dirty overtly Christian parts! What would have happened if they started watching it, without being aware it was Christian? Horrors! (on the other hand , they watched an R rated sci fi series over the summer, and he seemed cool with it!!) Anyways, it just saddens me. (i wasn't even trying to get them to watch it, we just had it lying around from one of the other kids renting it.)
Hey, no one at my church minds that i read the Watchtower, and JW publications! LOL. Although They may consider me somewhat eccentric in my interests.

Why is the history of Christmas, birthdays, etc, literally THOUSANDS of years ago......so Crucial. (What Does the BIble Teach Book - Do Origins matter? YES!) , but the history of their own org, which is SO much more recent, can be so easily dismissed. I think it's one dirty piece of candy.

Is it offensive to invite JW to birthday party?
by AuntBee inthe jw is long time best friend of my daughter, and she's having her 18th soon, surprise party.
i'm assuming it's best to just not invite him.
i don't want to offend him by inviting him, but i just want to be sure it won't hurt his feelings if i don't invite him.

THanks for all those great answers on that. Your insights definitely changed my perspective.

THe JW is long time best friend of my daughter, and she's having her 18th soon, surprise party. I'm assuming it's best to just not invite him. I don't want to offend him by inviting him, but i just want to be sure it won't hurt his feelings if i don't invite him. It's super sad however you slice it. :( He'll be totally missed by all his school friends, AND ME! I know this kind of stuff must be a bad memory to you guys. :(
It might put the mother over the edge if we invited him. Yikes, she already accused them of fornicating here at our house!! ROFL!

JW 'banned' in China
by isaacaustin ini have been told by a friend that the witnesses are banned in china.
is this true and what are the details?
is i sbanned or is it simply a tax exempt status issue?.
-
AuntBee
There are 2 forms of Christian churches in China. There are "government" churches, and those are out in the open. Then there are the underground churches, the "house" churches. In theory, they are not allowed to exist; they are against the law. Those identified as pastors or elders in the house churches are often at risk for being apprehended or jailed. I don't know what the latest estimate is, but the numbers in the house churches are HUGE, and still growing. -- There are still CHristian missionaries in China, but they are very covert and usually come in the guise of being students or employees.

cabasilas: Thanks for posting that mp3 link. I know a JW woman with young adult sons, who emphatically denied that there is any sentiment against higher education whatsoever! (By the way, her oldest son, about mid twenties, is still in the "Loving shelter" of their home) I feel kind of nauseated after hearing this. It's amazing how every so often during the talk, after all that heavy handed, spiritual, Bible out of context stuff......he says, then you are totally free to make your own personal decision.
