A@G: I just read a book called Allies for Armageddon, The Rise of Christian Zionism. I could not believe how much was in there about the history of ideas that were similar to CTR. Especially the views of Bible prophecy, year date theory, date setting, reading current headlines into eschatology, etc. I just thought i'd mention it, as it was an added bonus to what i expected to find in the book! IT would be an interesting project to compile a succinct form of the history of those ideas. Oh yes, it would clearly show how non-unique they were.

CT Russell was not the only wacky pyramidologist
by Awakened at Gilead ini just finished reading a 1943 essay by bertrand russell (not related to crackpot ctr as far as i know, lol) where he discusses his cynical viewpoint of religious beliefs.
towards the end of his essay, he indicates that, instead of being disgusted by people who believe crazy implausibilities, he is actually somewhat amused, even entertained, by some of them, when their beliefs are generally harmless to the rest of the population.
after listing a few of these what he terms superstitions that "add to the gaity of life", he makes an interesting statement that jws should pay attention to:.

What is the best state to live in in America?
by oompa inesp.
interested to hear from any who have traveled or moved around a bunch....i am talking climate, nearness to mountains or beach or both, cost of living, etc.....as much as i love what california has to offer naturewise, the natural disasters and cost of living there bum me out....since i like mountains and beach, a climate a little less hot than florida.... i lean toward virginia straight south down through georgia, so both carolinas too.
maybe maryland too, but the further north you go, the colder the water and worse the winter, but still the new england coastal states are incredible........oompa.

The best state is where i live: ARIZONA! Specifically, Tucson! Much lower cost of living than California. We have the Santa Catalina Mountains, 1 hour drive, snow skiing up there during the winter. And don't worry about the heat.....'it's a dry heat" don't you know! (Sorry no beaches.) Tucson is large enough of a city to have a lot of fun stuff, yet not as large and citified as Phoenix! We have cactii everywhere, gorgeous weather, scenery, etc. The only complaint has been that our daughters claim they cannot find good husbands here, which i'm assuming will not be of concern to Oompa.!

A few months ago, JWs came knocking at our door. One was the mom of a senior in hs that hangs out here a LOT, eats our food, sometimes goes places with us, etc. (dau is senior at same school) I made an appointment with them, and reasoned with her for well over an hour, with all the good info i've learned here on JWD. (thanks, guys!) I"ve known who she is for a few years, but didn't mention anything about her son. I was left mystified as to whether she just came here by chance , or if she wanted to check us out.! LOL. Not to mention i've always been mystified as to how he can hang here so much, the parents seem very hard-core, i think she is full time pioneer.
A few nights ago, he gets a call from the mother on his phone while here, inquiring as to what my first name is, as she thinks she knows me! Whoa!! She had no clue who i was when they were here! My dau hears her talking loudly, but son makes no reaction or comment afterwards. (VERY closed person, keeps the 2 'worlds' entirely separate)
Will he still be allowed to come over? Will he be grilled as to if i ever try to talk to him about JW issues? (I NEVER have.....yet) Is he embarrassed now to know she was here? (I offered my personal friendship to the mom after our meeting, but i said regrettably i knew she couldn't because i would be bad association, and she just stared at me. It felt kind of eerie...)

What's Your View of "Friends"? Are They "Real"???
by minimus inthe older i get, the more i see that most "friends" are not "real friends".
i can count on 1 hand who i consider friends.
i have many enjoyable aquaintances that i socialize with but i doubt they'd really be "there" for you.
-
AuntBee
I think counting on one hand the 'real' friends is about the norm. I have 5 friends that i consider 'best' friends, loyal, always be there, i can say anything to, etc. And i count myself very blessed to have this many! The older i get, the more they mean to me. Much more than material things, accomplishments, prestige ,etc. There is nothing like a real friend!! I always remind my daughters of the importance of female friendship, when they are obsessed with boyfriends! LOL.
