Chalam, The WT, as you know, doesn't teach anything close to the view of the Atonement most Christians have, which is called "penal substitution." Christ's death only paid for the sin of Adam. This is from a convoluted application of Christ being the "last Adam." The details are kind of in chapter 5 of the What Does the Bible Teach book, if you have the energy to try and untangle its thoughts. -- How do the people that live through Armageddon into Paradise Earth pay for their personal sins? -- THe WT theology is so incredibly sad, and can lead to only incredible despair or complete arrogance. If you think of the Scriptures as containing both "Law" and "Gospel", their teachings keep only "Law" and completely remove "Gospel", which is pure Promise, or declaration of Good News. (Except for the ever growing Annointed class, of course.)

The JW belief "death pays for sin"
by Chalam inhello jwners,.
i was just reading doublelife's thread and what struck me was this jw doctrine "she said that since my dad died, he paid for his sins, and he'll probably be resurrected.".
so, why did jesus to die for our sins if we are just going to pay for them with our own death's?!.

I studied theology for a few years as an undergraduate. We learned about cults, as far as their doctrines. I was amazed when i found out here how little i knew about how JW-ism is fleshed out in real life, and i've been shocked by what i've learned here. I was looking for more info a few years ago, because my daughter's high school best friend was born-in. His mother pioneers, and came knocking at my door, not having any clue who i was, or that my daughter lived here, in spite of him being here several times a week during senior year! I asked her if she would let her kids die for lack of blood, and she said YES! with an eerie smile, and not even any hesitation. Since then, I've participated in distributing flyers detailing some of the practices such as blood, to warn the public. (Thanks for recruiting me, Sister Pioneer!) -- I'm still very interested in the Bible and theology, and i appreciate the intelligent discussion here, and the candid sharing of real lives.

Jehovah's Witnesses and Amway
by paul from cleveland inmaybe you're all familiar with this subject already but i just came across it tonight.
it's an article about whether or not amway is a cult.
the similarities between jehovah's witnesses and amway are incredible.. http://www.cocs.com/jhoagland/amcult.html.

A couple tried to recruit my husband and I into Amway when we were newlyweds. Even though we had very little money, after the presentation we told the couple that we had enough for our needs, and were really happy, so no thanks. Just the fact that we weren't interested seemed to cause tension in the relationship. They had never had us over before or after, so we felt like we were just being used anyway.
Another couple we knew was into Amway, and the thing that creeped us out was they always called it "the business", and never said to anyone in our group of friends exactly what it was, at least at first! Seemed like a red flag, but we didn't know much about it at the time.

Christians: Is Military Service Wrong?
by leavingwt inchristians: is military service wrong?.
imho, there are times when individuals/famlies/communities/states/nations must take up arms to defend themselves.
otherwise, they will cease to exist.. .

I like what leavingwt said about how if a country would not defend itself in any way, it would cease to exist. I think our country and the freedoms we have would cease to exist quickly, if it became known that we would not respond in any way to an incursion by another country.
Most Christians, Catholic and Protestant, have for a long time generally subscribed to Augustine's theory of just war. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2001/septemberweb-only/9-17-55.0.html Of course several denominations are pacifist.

JW's and home schooling?
by semelcred ini don't wish to offend any that are teaching their kids at home, but today i was again confronted by a situation where a jw family were home schooling.
the kids had little structure to their routine and without putting the mum down, she was no teacher in an academic sense.. the subject is close to my heart because my parents who are witnesses, took my younger brothers out of school and home tutored them.
the were subjected to below standard education and limited in social skills, particularly as my parents are crap at these skills themselves.. i have grown to hate home schooling except in the situation of medical or logistical situations.. what are your comments good or bad and do you think the option to home school is abused by the witness community?.

I've home-schooled for many years, only until high school. I agree with many of the posters. It can be good; it can be bad. It just depends. -- Motivation is important. I've seen people that are into the isolation thing, and it's very concerning, and doesn't work. -- If the mother is not a person that relishes study, reading, research, and education herself, it will become an incredible burden, and she will resent the huge outlay of time , energy, money ,etc. ANyone prone to anxiety or depression should NOT do it. -- It also takes a lot of energy to take them to sports, activities and music lessons, and everywhere so they can have many social experiences.
On the plus side: You can tailor subjects to the student individually. They may be advanced at one, and slow in another. No coming home after long day at school to face hours of homework, as some do ,even in grade school! They have more free / down time when they're very young to be active, play outside and get into hobbies/interests.
Here in Arizona some of the school districts are very large, and tend to be poor quality. There is a huge charter school movement here, though, which is cool!

Whatever you do,as far as trying to give info, do it quickly. My good friend's daughter is being baptized in March (boyfriend and his mother bringing her in!), and we were AMAZED at how quickly she was indoctrinated against listening to anyone else. They teach them early on that Satan is going to HATE them "sudying the BIble", and will bring fierce opposition (that's you, Dad!) I knew about this, but seeing it played out in real life with an extremely intelligent 18 year old, it was still shocking.

Gary DeMar makes a case for this same thing in his book "Last Days Madness". It's a great read, and very freeing for people raised on Apocalyptic fear, or even rapture fever. (gotta love the title!)

JWs having Facebook Sex - Strongly warned to get off FB at CA yesterday
by shopaholic inso it appears that jws are letting their freaky side come out on fb for everyone to see.. there was talk on the ca yesterday strongly warning all true lovers of jehovah to delete their fb accounts.
the talk was solely about fb.
the speaker mentioned that jws are associating with people that would not associate with in real life, often using the excuse that the person is a relative.

My daughter just told me that her 2 JW friends, 18 and 20, (not friends any more, she tried to prevent one of them from becoming JW for her boyfriend, and they both dropped her) deleted their FB accounts. Then, after a while.............they made new ones!! LOL.
