When I asked a JW that, they said it was for printing Bibles, and for the 'world-wide' work.

Jgnat, I LOVE your statement -" Here's the thing. Has anyone asked the children? What of their hopes, ambitions, dreams? I strongly believe it is the job of every parent to help their child reach their full potential. " I personally also see this as one of our major responsibilities as parents, and of course we even make sacrifices to make it happen for each one!
I remember talking to one of the JW teens my daughter was close to, at our house, while he was in high school. I always like to show enthusiasm/support for their dreams/plans, and he had wanted to be a band director, super talented in music! As i was asking him questions, and being excited over it, he just started mumbling and looking down at the ground, and seemed very sad/uncomfortable. -- His brother at their graduation, excitedly told me he would like to become an engineer.(smart enough to do it too!)
Fast forward almost 5 years later. "engineer" brother is working as a lifeguard, a job kids around here do at age 16; he's pushing 23. He said he is taking classes to work in something related to what the dad does, which he also told me about 3 years ago, So obviously he is still not even qualified for that job. But he remarked it'll be good, because it's 'easy.' He told my daughter, who he was in love with for years, that he loves living at home, it's a sweet gig, and he hopes he can as long as possible!! -- Other brother we knew as a teen is almost 25, left college after a year or 2, lives at home, and i think has some kind of anxiety disorder, and doesn't seem to do much. Oldest brother recently moved back home, he must be around 30. So here we have FOUR GROWN MEN, not even close to being able to move out, marry, etc.!! As a parent, this just makes me SO MAD; i cannot even fathom this. I know ,i know it's the mind control ,etc.
Several of us concerned parents outside of JW world have been concerned about them for years, and we all concur that the mother has some type of mental illness, so it is a double whammy for these sons. I wish there was a way to help them. :(
I'm sure it will be so good for your kids DS211, to have one parent out of the WT, and looking at things differently, and trying to help them find their talents/passions and build a good future.

They say Jesus wasn't born in the winter because it was too cold, well in NYC a week ago it was 64 degrees.
by Legacy inso they say jesus wasn't born on 12/25 or in the winter because it was so cold & the shepherds would not be out in the cold.
i live in nyc & around the holiday time the temp.
rose to 64...i'm just saying..so that's not a good reason to say jesus wasn't born in the winter or 12/25.

That's really interesting, Legacy. On wiki, it says the average temperature in Bethlehem during December is 45-57.
And here's something else interesting, at least i think it is. LOL! My neighbor grew up in Bethlehem, and worked as a shepherd for some years as a teenager. he says they were out in the fields with the sheep day and night, year around! He told me that sheep eat a lot, and were always out to pasture. He said there were no stores to go buy bales of hay! Keeping them "in" would be very problematic, as to keeping them fed. If the weather got very severe, he could usually find a cave to take shelter in. He thinks it's funny that WT is so dogmatic that shepherds aren't out in the fields by night during December!

i am long past that "excitement", been out for a couple of years now.
this was the first time they rang my door bell.

My inlaws got that same tract yesterday here in Arizona. It was kind of a hit and run, they said the JWs clearly did not want to actually talk at all.

"With everything that is going on in this world it really is wonderful to be spiritually awake! The world is groping for answers to solve their problems. Jehovah is revealing to us what is about to happen. So lift your heads up because your deliverance is near!!"
So, Jehovah is revealing to us (through the WT? Through the Slave?) what is GOING TO HAPPEN? But, i thought they never claim to be prophets or inspired? Obviously their members are being given a different take on it.

Millions now living will never die
by MrFreeze inyes, rutherford proclaimed in 1918 that "millions now living will never die.
" well it's been 95 years since.
how many 95+ year old people are alive on earth today?
-
AuntBee
That's a really good point, Jookbeard! I just realized that recently, having thought of it as more similar to the 1914 thing, thinking, ok , how long would that be past 1925, if millions would still be alive, etc.
ALl that 1925/BethSarim predictions/speculation is the backdrop to Rutherford's "light flashing up" to reveal the great crowd in the 30's! Essentially, a whole new religious system apart from the New Covenant. As the old saying goes "Consider the source." Was that guy a reliable and trustworthy interpreter of Scripture? ? Or...if it was light "from Jehovah", special revelation, what was his track record with that? Wow, what was that guy smoking (drinking?)???
It's just as though Hal Lindsey or Harold Camping would come up with a MAJOR new interpretation never before heard of, after their failed predictions/speculations, and say this is light from Jehovah, and you have to listen to it!

Then (1960) and now (2013)
by theron ware ini was raised as a jw from the age of 7. i was df'd for apostasy in 1971 at the age of 23. it has been 42 years since i have had contact with any jehovah's witnesses, including my family.
last year i moved to tucson.
when i read that a district assembly was coming to town, and that it would be at the convention center only minutes from my house, i decided to check it out.

I just wanted to throw in my two cents on theron ware, as he seems pretty modest and unassuming. Theron has had a brilliant career in two different fields, and has more than one published work-related book. I was beyond impressed that he achieved all of this with no family/parent support whatsoever, the trauma of shunning, etc. Not only that, he's a good conversationalist who doesn't talk down to an average Joe(sephine) like me! A really great guy, it made my day to meet him.
