Deadwood anyone?

my gosh, i am two episodes into season two.

started at the beginning of season one.

Deadwood was something of a place unto itself.

Deadwood offers a few things that make a good myth. A good story... you could only hope to ever dream up "Aces and eights, the deadmans hand". The other story...gold. Put em both together and you get a story to make movies about. A story set in a really neat period ... rich enough to carry it's weight without modernizing the dialouge.

Dont get me wrong... I am the biggest fan of the old west... I shoot the guns, rope the cows and ride the horses... almost daily... But Deadwood being a place unto itself? No more than , Tombstone, Guthrie OK, and every cow town on the Chisholm Trail all the way into Kansas.

Did you know that legal bordellos operated in Ft Smith Arkansas well into the 20th century.

You just made my case by quouting that newpaper clipping.

What was usually regarded as the "frontier" was closed in 1892 or so... Western towns and writers were already starting to romanticize the past.

That qoute is mostly from William F Cody, Buffalo Bill. He would pass in 1916. In 1903 he was running a "Wild West Show" that was pulling down record gate revenues...based on the growing mythology of the West. It would certainly not be in his best interest to smudge the reputation of the kind of folks he needed to be 'legends'.

Harte could spin a bit of a yarn himself.

It should be noted that in that era it would not have been considered polite or good form to speak ill of someone ...especially in a obit. Lot's of polish on that writing... and on par for the times.

Beks...you are right.. not much to watch on TV...Deadwood would have had a broader audience and production life if the script played more with the manners and mores of the era instead of pandering to contemporary tastes.

John... in a healthy relationship toleration is more like working around it. "Pick your battles". Some stuff just dont matter... and if its a core issue ... well you may just have to move on.

Tolerance and arrogance are the polar opposites of "humility".

Texan is walking down a Farm to Market (FM) road in the middle of the day. He has a burlap bag over his shoulder.

After several miles he meets another Texan on the road heading the opposite way.

"hey, what ya got in that gunney sack? the second asks the first.

"In this here sack?" drawls the first," I got 6 rabbits" and he continues, "but if you can guess how many I got...why I'll give ya half!"

A few years before I got dumped for Jehooba...

I asked the wife if she accepted the blood of Christ as spilled on behalf of her sins... (we were discucssin the real value of JW ism) ... her eyes rolled back in her head like she was posessed.

Closest I have ever come to calling an exorcist. I wont bet the farm on it... but that moment really made me think the Satan runs the Watchtower.

it's amazes me to this day ....folks will poo poo what "they cant prove" and back things that cant be "proved" either.

Faith --- i guess it's just to hard to accept. My son is a philosopy major... and went through all the 'isms and such the last few years... He is converting to Catholicism after stints of agonostic and atheiestic incarnations.

I asked him why... he told me it dawned on him after arguing with a Preist that "it takes as much effort NOT to believe in God and it does TO believe in God"

So much for the WT take on modern college education... the study of critical thinking brough one genius-level thinker I know to FAITH.

Calamity Jane was butt ugly... and about as dysfunctional as any modern crack whore of today might be. She like to wear mens clothes and worked as a teamster and a whore... and that says alot about the guys who would pay for that clapped up- tramp. If she was alive today she'd be featured on "Cops".

The only way we even know of her today is due to the promotion of her and certain others she ran with in the pulp writing of the day. She was played up... and the myth extended by early Hollywood.

I wonder who of our generation will be the stuff of future legend? Britanny Spears? Your local bar whore? Who knows?
