I always ignored the memorial season. I guess to me it meant "better get to the store to find a new dress and don't forget to look for matching shoes as well! Don't wait til the day before."
I would do the bible readings too. They were important to me.
All the other stuff just blew over my head. Increased service time? Naaah.

Did Your District Conventions Have A Meat Market?
by Jeremy C ini was recently thinking back upon some of my unusual memories of being in the organization.
one of them was of the dodger stadium "meat market".. we used to attend our district conventions at dodger stadium in los angeles.
for those of you who arent familiar with the stadium, dodger stadium has a very large level with blue seats - which is the largest level within the stadium.

I don't think we had an area. I was too young to know when we went to the stadium. When we moved into a circular coliseum, then we just simply walked and walked around in circles. I think I found the attempt fruitless, as we mostly just walked past each other but never stopped to talk, although there were a couple of years in there when I managed to meet a few new brothers. It baffles me now how I did it.

symbolism, intention (and linguistics?)

Something I've been pondering .... this will ramble, sorry ....
The symbolism that we put on things. I sorta got really SICK of all the symbolism attached to everything in JW. You know what I mean if you've been in. The appearances of everything. The double meanings of everything. But mostly I started pondering, at first, words and swear words.
We attach symbolism to sounds. So, for instance, "dame" is okay, but "damn" is not. "Dam" is fine, though. What if I inadvertently swear in another language? Well, apparently it's not the making of the sound that is the problem, it's the intention behind it. SO, because of the symbolism we attach to sounds, and our intention, we can have sanctions put against us. "NO MORE 'PRIVILEGES'!"
The symbolism of action and intention. A doctor can touch a woman's breast, but a suitor cannot. The action is the same, but the intention is what causes the problem.
So I got to thinking, what if you intentionally strip something of its symbolism? If I get called a racial slur, but refuse to accept the symbolism of the sound, then I've removed all power it has over me. If someone commits an action that may offend me (short of physically harming me, of course), and I refuse to accept the symbolism or the intention, then I have removed a source of negativity from my life. Someone flips me the finger, I can keep skipping along and humming my song. Strip them of the power! (I've put this into action, btw, and have gained a much greater sense of peace in my life.)
This thought grew into pondering why God would hold our human system of symbolism against us. We as a society have attached meaning to actions, and now God judges us for the meanings we have put on things? He wouldn't have cared if I said "sh!t" if it meant "my dear child", but he cares if I make the sound because it means "poop"? (Which he doesn't seem to mind THAT word!) And 300 years ago, that "S" word was just the name you gave to manure. So now God cares today about the word, but he didn't care 300 years ago?
Which then begs the question, why does he care about other actions and intentions? Why does he care so much about our private thoughts? Why will we be "saved" or "destroyed" for our thoughts? If I think "the FDS is God's representative on earth" then I will be saved, but if I think "the FDS is NOT God's representative on earth" I will be destroyed?
It just seems so random, and so utterly human.

That is very sweet!
But I worry about the personal information she put online, especially if she's underage. Lurkers can find the info and, outside of anyone's watchful eye, contact her, etc. Since you say it's your granddaughter, we assume she's a minor.

Sometimes my family would save them and use them the next year, I think.
Otherwise, I think I remember a bit of a mad dash to the food stand after the last session to get whatever you could find "for the ride home." Stuff went quickly, though, and you couldn't always find the lower-cost things. -

by sir82 inat the recent circuit assembly..... on saturday afternoon, there was a symposium on behavior modification "conquering the evil with the good".. along with the usual idiotic groundless assertions about the "dangers" of university education, new technology, internet porn, etc., there was this new and rather startling revelation of a subtle satanic snare that all should watch out for..... game shows!.
yes, directly in the society's outline, there was a specific and clear-cut point on the "dangers" of watching game shows on tv!
watching them could (paraphrase) "get you to thinking about how much money or prizes the contestant was winning, and then you're thinking 'boy, i'd sure like to have that new car / boat / dinette set', and that leads to materialism.".

mmm, you could still get the hot lunches then, at least at the CAs.
Does anyone remember how the grapes in the fruit baskets were always the most delicious EVER? Over the years they started getting icky and unripe, but back then there was never a bad one in the bunch!
