  thanks to the australian royal commission our youngest son has woke up.

  we received a e-mail from him tonight where he apologized to us for shunning us all these years, how bad he felt for doing this.

  Obama spent two decades of his life attending Jeremiah Wright's church where he railed on and on about how evil white people are.

  And when questioned about it, said he never heard Wright's racially divisive message.
  

  Went to the church for 20 years. Never heard it.

  firstly, i want to be crystal clear how grateful i am for jwn.

  it's been my place of support for over seventeen years and it's the first online space i direct anyone to if they are taking steps out of the cult.

  i am not bashing jwn - i love this place and appreciate the hard work and expense simon puts in to keep it going.

  I think this board has been, and will continue to be a treasure.
  
  I recall the politics getting heated after Obama was elected. Didn't mean too much then - good discussions were had, and I doubt that the heat over Trump will be different.
  
  I think the connections we 'enjoy' via the JW experience, can serve to overwhelm any other frictions. Hope so, anyways. Love you all. And good job, Simon, et. al.

  Cult mentality is applying a spurious label to a source:
  
  * Satan's world
  * False religion
  
  and then proceeding to discard all arguments from that source, based on the label. Kinda like you have done.
  
  Hassan is indeed a recognized authority on cults. He is not infallible. Therefore, all his arguments are, and must continue to be, scrutinized for validity. This is the case with all rational, scientific endeavors. Name calling doesn't cut it.

  is it me or do you share my thoughts about life seeming so simple when were--------------kids and when we were----------------die-hard jw’s?.

  as a kid we trusted our parents explicitly.

  their word was truth and we believed everything they said.

  Yes, thinking for yourself is a burden (of-sorts).

  Because you have to own and live with the outcomes of your decisions.

  This "burden" is one I'm willing to bear. In the ORG you can see learned dysfunction from being spoon-fed conclusions to every one of life's complicated questions.
  
  The inability (unwillingness?) to adjust to new information carries over into other areas of life. Suffering results.

  "If something can’t go on forever, it won’t"

  As the ORG struggles forward, JWs will have to get nuttier to stay in it. They are up against entropy (undefeated in the history of the universe).
  
  I do share some of your sentimentality concerning our very black/white, cut and dried paradigms of childhood, but I think as time goes on, it will be harder and harder to be a JW.

  Their lives may be simpler, but more miserable.

  Not true. Also serves to define a country as an actual working political entity, with actual rules and laws about who may and may not be there.
