That being said, it is your house, your rules.
This seems to be a common thought....
Sigh...my house my rules....welcome to the middle ages. Ive had roommates, I didnt lay down rules for them. I just assumed we would all have good manners. The term adult children is contradictory isn't it? They may be your offspring but they are adults now. What happens when things are reversed and you are forced to live in their house? Will you obey their rules? What if those rules entail denying of privileges generally granted to adults (or rights?) Or interfering when you are enjoying your rights (such as your offspring knocking on the door when you are talking to a gentleman friend in your room?) Or your reading material being regulated? Your church going habits being restricted? I could of course tell my christian roommates that the rules in MY apartment are that no bibles are allowed to be read...or praying to yahweh? or jesus?
Now lets get to the pregnancy thing...ok yeah I understand if it adds burdens of time and finances to you.. I knew a chick (a sister) that had a daughter that was constantly getting pregnant, (five at last count as I recall) and just leaving them with the grandmother, NEVER helping in any way. Of course the courts would not intervene. That then is just a matter of forthrightness on your part.. Hey dude I understand if you want to have men over, but I cannot afford 3 more children, if you get pregnant then this or that is the result, without my help....bla bla
Anyhow I thought about this as some good "rules"

All I Really Need To Know
by Robert Fulghum
I Learned In Kindergarten
- an excerpt from the book, All I Really Need To Know I Learned in KindergartenAll I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.
ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how to live and what to do
and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not
at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the
sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life - learn some and think some
and draw and paint and sing and dance and play
and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic,
hold hands, and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup:
The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody
really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even
the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die.
So do we.
And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books
and the first word you learned - the biggest
word of all - LOOK.
Everything you need to know is in there somewhere.
The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation.
Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.
Take any of those items and extrapolate it into
sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your
family life or your work or your government or
your world and it holds true and clear and firm.
Think what a better world it would be if
all - the whole world - had cookies and milk about
three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with
our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments
had a basic policy to always put thing back where
they found them and to clean up their own mess.
And it is still true, no matter how old you
are - when you go out into the world, it is best
to hold hands and stick together. -

c) the modified crops will make farmers completely dependant on the large pharma corporations which produce these crops. farmers will have to buy the seeds each year from the company.
I dont know the specifics of this case. Nor do I care one way or another about GM foods. In fact I would eat them just as well as I would eat Ford or Chrysler Foods (wink). However the one thing I do find disturbing is that just mentioned. Some foods are being purposefully modified to prevent germenation without a specific chemical or purchase of new seeds the following year. This forces the farmer every year to buy new seeds. While that in itself is not to disturbing, assuming there is a higher value in those seeds, such as high crop yields, or lack of need for pesticides...there have been concerns that those plants would cross breed with other plants, rendering those plants unable to produce in future generations.
Ima not gonna tie myself to a dock over the issue though. Just a curiousity.

Wasn't there a better way to destroy the wicked than using a global flood?
by truthseeker ini've often wondered, what was the real pupose of the global deluge?
what did it achieve?.
surely jehovah could just as easily have destroyed the nephilim as he did the cities of sodom and gomorrah?.

Biblical Theology or Atheism the only two choices?
by Hyghlandyr ini am amazed at the numbers of perrsons who believe that if one is not a christian (or jew or muslim) then one must be an atheist.
i do not believe in the existence of deities.
i however do not deny that deities might exist.

Stillajwexelder,
Yes both christianity, skeptical or allegorical, and agnosticism are choices. Each individual must choose for himself for the choice to be valid and numerous christians do choose christianity for themselves. It is as valid as any other choice. In addition there are many liberal versions of christianity that do not teach thatonly christians are saved...

You might find a couple places interesting then. One is the Universal Life Church. They will ordain anyone and the ordinations are legally valid. Also I have found the Unitarian Universalists interesting. Both have a Judeo-Christian history, but are very liberal. Universal life accepts any doctrine and does not require leaving membership in ANY organization. UU might, depending on the control placed by that organization. While JWs would want me to leave, ULC would let me be JW and ULC if I wanted. Or pagan, atheist and so forth. It is also validating to be ordained, knowing that you are running your own personal church, congregation, grove, coven, or whatever you want to call your associations.

Before You Bequeath Your Property To "The Society"..
by Englishman in..be aware that it could be auctioned to the highest bidder.. the pic is of the house that the assistant local po lived at until his death some weeks ago.
like many witnesses, he decided to name the watchtower society as the sole beneficiary of his will.
astonishingly, the house has been put up for auction instead of being put on the market via an estate agency.. this means of disposal ensures a quick sale to a cash buyer with a minimum of delay.

Ive read the various comments about the Society and how it demonstrates the kinds of fiends they are, for auctioning the house instead of selling it. I do not see it. If someone would like to post something that really demonstrates that auctioning an inherited property is devious, I would be glad to listen.
I do not know how charities work in the UK. I know that in the USA religions are registered with the IRS under a 501C classification. This does not require that they give something back to society. It is used only to differentiate an organization that is not primarly profit related from one that is. However, if an organization, church, or other non-profit, does something non-related that makes a profit, they have to declare it and pay taxes on it.
For instance, if I start to collect donations for my church (which I can do now that I am ordained with the Universal Life Church) and I use those donations for building a meeting hall, then that is non-taxable. If I use the donations to pay base expenses, such as certain meals, or transportation expenses, that are related to my duty as a minister, those are non-taxable. If the donations, or the church itself, buys or leases me a car, as long as I am only using it for church duties, I do not have to pay taxes. Once I start to use it for personal use, the line gets hazier and hazier and eventually, I have to pay at least some tax based on my percentage of personal use of the vehicle.
I understand that many ex jws think Jehovahs Witnesses are not a religion and not entitled to 501c classification, or other charity classifications in other countries. A lot of that though depends on the law. If the law allows religions to have such classification then they are most certainly entitled to it. Personally I think religions should be treated like everyone else. If a religion takes in donations, it has to pay income tax on them in the same fashion as everyone else. No perks. Though of course they also would get to deduct expenses like everyone else, such as payroll, utilities, rent or mortgage and so forth. Thus they, like everyone else, would only pay taxes on their profit.
We want to believe in religious freedom, but I have noticed from many ex jws that religious freedom, .like for most people, means religious freedom for those that think like us. I do not have to believe the things that JWs believe. I do not have like their practices. I can oppose shunning. I can expose their UN policies and membership. I can even demand that they, and all religions be held to the same rules that apply to secular society. Such as reporting abuse. filing taxes and providing information in their files about members to the members, (as in Englands law which requires companies and charities to do so..similar to the USA's freedom of information act, though our act only requires the govt to provide such information).
But in demanding these things, that religion be treated the same as everyone else, I also require that religions get the same fair treatment. If the law allows religions to get away with not paying income tax like everyone else, then that has to apply to everyone. If the law allows religions to inherit, then that has to apply to everyone. If the law allows auctions instead of normal straight up sales, then that has to apply also. I fail to see how it is devious. And when I am looking at the society, I am hoping not to color my vision of knowledge and experience of things that are indeed demonstrations of selfishness, hypocrisy, and harm to their members on their part, with such visions in every action that they take, even those things that are not such as mentioned.
I do not of course close my eyes to the great harm that is caused by them, other christian religions, other religions, other govt organizations, other businesses, other philosophies, other persons around the world. I merely am saying I am better off looking for harm where it exists instead of being offended at things that are not harmful.
All of that now being said, would it have been nice if they were a true charitable organization? Wouldn't it be nice if they took this money from the house and donated it to at least JWs that are in dire need and also told those jws not to worry about donating in their poor state? Wouldnt it be nice if they had real educational programs, like critical thinking courses and wouldnt it be nice if they encouraged college attendance and even, gasp, offered scholarships or at least loans to those attending? Sure all the way around. But none of this helps me to see how them auctioning a house that they inherited rather than just sellingg it on the market, makes them fiends.

My daughter came home wearing a cross...........
by happehanna in.
and it made me feel odd, unnerved.. i haven't been to a meeting for two years now and am quite anti jw but this still felt odd, to see her wearing a cross.
any ideas?

I suggest you go get yourself a big ole crucifix, and an egyptian ankh. Get a couple to wear on your neck also, and some buddhist prayer beads. After a while of seeing that no harm comes from this stuff you wont be shocked anymore:)
I might add some tarot cards to the mix. Perhaps a Ouige board. Try prayin to someone Like Osiris also. You will find he answers your prayers as often as Jehovah does.
