Sorry to be the party pooper but a trivial adjustment in the death rate and some beneficial effects of regulation in Americas rivers does not indicate good news. One can recite a litany of woe worldwide and give a much more realistic picture. As far as the JWs relishing every tidbit and morsel of negative news my response to them is that even if civilization collapses it will not be the way they predicted.

Ruining the Earth
by zarco inan interesting quote from the august 24 newsweek on page 66. .
"over the past three decades america's rivers, lakes and skies have been transformed.
acid rain levels have dropped 60 percent since the early 1990s; air quality has improved 91 percent since 1980 in terms of lead content.

JW hijacked sisters my wedding
by artemis.design injust a few months ago my little jw sister got married at 19. i remember how excited she was when she started planning the wedding.
both she and her partner made it clear that there were lots of none jw's present (myself included) so it was not to be a "theocratic" event.
none of those stupid plays or performances.

I remember a JW wedding were it was specified that it would be a family only event and that was respected. Of course the person announcing it was an elder and father of the groom. The family just went to a little italian restaurant. Other JW weddings I have gone to seemed pretty laid back and simple. Things seem to have gotten complicated since.
I'm not surprised that the reception was crashed for free food but were those stupid games the elders idea?

JWoods: "Some pretty smart people can get deluded into some very dumb things...we are not alone in this."
Another example of intelligent fools was Sir Conan Doyle author of the Sherlock Holms series and a theosiphist. He believed in fairies, literal fairies and other spooks that were part of theosophist spiritualism.

I was 14. I got myself in. I started having doubts at 16. I got myself disfellowshipped at 21. Slight embarrasment but I don't feel foolish. Look at where most teenagers end up.

God confused peoples language so they couldn't build Babel....a load of crap!
by Witness 007 inyeah well, back in the day a group of people built a tower to heaven, so god confused their languages so they would not build a "mega city" and become powerful.. or if you want to used half a brain....languages evolved over time as a form of comunication between different tribes.
many languages are related, slavic or asian languages share the same or simular words.
oh and the cherry on top is adam and eve spoke yiddish.....ooie mashugana!

We also have to look at the quality of life of the elderly. Throughout their youth and adulthood they eat junk and drink loads of sugar getting diabetes and other disseases. Then our high tec pills and other things come to their "rescue". We would have an even longer lifespan if we took preventative measures.

BTS: What a failure for the US healthcare system.
We are in 50th place as far as life expectancy although the difference isn't much more than a year or two (List of countries by life expectancy, wikipedia). Most of them have national health care.
As far as extending our lifespan markedly, nanodevices, gene therapies etc are still a ways ahead. We already have Calorie Restriction(+mega vitamins) and perhaps Deprenyl dosing as proven techniques.

What do you know "without googling" about the reputed mechanisms for evolution?
by gubberningbody ini see people take positions all day long and i rather suspect both sides are woefully ignorant.. i read and hear people speak of the volumes of data pro or con and when i ask for specific examples of what each may be referring to, i am often met with silence.. .

Survival of the most reproductive in a given environment. This is as concise as it gets. For an example take wingless birds. The mutation that gives an occasional bird a stunted wing would assure their death before being able to reproduce by virtue of the fact that they could not fly away from predators. However if these birds were to migrate and take up residence in a secluded island where there are no natural predators any mutation like that would not kill them in fact it would improve their chances for survival during drought induced famines due to the fact that wings are metabolically expensive to maintain if there is no good reason to maintain them.
A famine that may kill, let's say, 50% of all birds on the island may just leave the wingless bird scrawny and weak. As soon as the famine ends the population of normal winged birds doubles along with the wingless one except that now the wingless one is overrepresented-his numbers has doubled in proportion to the "normal" birds. As these cycles of famine continue, every few centuries or so, the wingless birds eventually out repoduce the winged ones and a new species is born.
