from time to time we read faith-strengthening experiences of brothers and sisters who undergo ferocious persecution while maintianing their integrity.
even when faced with torture and death, these valiant martyrs "hold fast" to the source of their real strength, which is......... .......watchtower publications???.
here's a gem that was shared with me, and now i have the honor of relating it to you all.
James_woods (This time I got the name right!):
"I have heard that one before - also the one where some sister was thrown into a basement jail in Hiroshima, Japan for going door to door - and was the only person in the downtown city who survived the atom bomb."
Just as a historical footnote, recollecting from my nuclear research years ago, there was one survivor of the Hiroshima nuclear blast in close proximity to ground zero.
She wasn't out in any field service for sure and it's extremely doubtful that anyone would have survived in a basement jail in downtown Hiroshima. Anyone in downtown Hiroshima, even if they were spared the thermal radiance of the detonation, would have had their eardrums ruptured and lungs mortally damaged through "overpressure" from the intensity of the shockwave (blast) at that close a distance (Imagine an unopened beer can being squeezed by a very strong hand and squirting while crushed.)
The actual survivor was a woman who, either through extreme paranoia or Obsessive Compulsive Syndrome, took shelter deep inside a long tunnel that was used as shelter during bombing raids (With conventional weapons, of course.).
The full story is this. A city alarm siren would go off every time a bomber would be sighted but would not continue if there was only one bomber. The reason was that a single bomber would be considered a surveillance plane. Any actual bombing run would involve many planes. Therefore, it was considered a false alarm to continue the sirens for a single airplane.
Of course, with a nuclear bomb it only took one bomber and the Japanese were not expecting that.
This particular woman, however, was the only person who, apparently out of compulsion, took shelter. In spite of the fact that she was deep inside the tunnel she suffered burns from what is known as the "popcorn effect". The "popcorn effect" occurs when superheated grains of sand, on the surface, leaps up into the air (The heat makes it rise.) and travels a distance due to the blast.
That superheated sand entered the tunnel (Which had no blast doors.) and burned her somewhat. Apparently she was too deep for the "overpressure" to reach her at lethal levels.

James_woods. My sincerest apologies. I meant to write Mr. Falcon, since I was addresing my comments to him, but your name was immediately below and I got confused as to who wrote what.

PS: I corrected the name on the previous entry.

Mr. Falcon, that is a good attempt but it would have to be either vulgar or visceral with a more intense verbal impact. Otherwise the Witnesses will shrug it off as a coincidence.
"WATCHTOWER-BULLSHIT" would make an obviously undeniable message. Better yet "APOSTATE-JOKE" would get the message through even clearer. Perhaps "SHIT-FOR-BRAINS" would do.
Also, as I mentioned previously, it would absolutely have to be composed of the first letter of every sentence because, when such a text is cut and pasted or texted, the word order changes and the message would be lost (If the letter were to start in mid-sentence, that is.)

in looking for a particular reference to carl sagan's the demon-haunted world: science as a candle in the dark, i stumbled across this website:.
http://www.crossroad.to/q&a/science/sagan.htm.
it appears the page was created as a rebuttal against carl's book.
Vidiot:
"Do you know if he ever suggested any belief systems that might be decent candidates, or make any suggestions about what that kind of society might look like?"
So far as I know, based on the writings of his that I've read, he never took that idea and fleshed it out in detail as to what such a society would look like. Nor did he suggest any specific current religions/philosophies. In any case, it would have to be a radically different religion than any that have previously existed.

Just an idea. Maybe one of us, with time to kill, can make up one of these stories with a hidden message in it. Then we can spread it through JW land.
The first letter of each sentence could spell out BULLSHIT or something. Arnold the Great, Governor of California, once did something similar in a memo he sent to Democratic lawmakers.
The above example did not use the first letter of each sentence; that would take far more imagination; but it would be necessary to do so because, since such a message on our part will be cut and pasted and also texted throughout JW land, the position of the text will change.
Anyway, once it circulates throughout JW land, one of us "demooonz" could inform them of the cryptogram's true message.

i ask this question in harmony with deedub's swan song thread which i linked below.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/members/private/205902/1/time-to-say-good-bye.
to some degree, i think i understand where she's coming from.
just speaking from my own experiences since stepping into the world of anonymous apostacy, i went through a few different phases of personal outlooks.
Being honest with yourself, could you have reasonably adjusted your attitude and continued on as a JW?
A lobotomy would have helped.

"No Sagan fans?"
Shortly after I was disfellowshipped from the Witnesses, in 1980, I happened to watch Carl Sagan's Cosmos series on a portable, three inch screen tv. It made a deep impression and it reshaped my worldview.
Later, after I had acquired a first edition of the book Cosmos, I went to a science fair where I heard that Sagan was autographing books. I took the book to the area where he was but there was such a long line that I became discouraged and left. I regret, to this day, having made that decision.
One thing I recall Sagan saying, I forget where, is that science would have to tap into the power religion. Anthropologists realize that religion is a deeply rooted part of the human psyche extending all the way back to prehistoric cave paintings. It is most probably either genetically predisposed or it is an indirect result of having a brain so active, compared to our ancestors, that we have to create a "narrative" or worldview to explain an otherwise incomprehensible world.
As an atheist I find nothing wrong with the 'religious' impulse per se but I do find plenty wrong with virtually every religion in the world throughout historic times. My explanation is that civilizations, throughout history, have been so dysfunctional that they create dysfunctional religions. A scientifically imbued, naturalistic religion ,with pantheistic undertones, is what humanity needs. That, however will require a radically different society/civilization than the one we have.,

with the new " overlap generation " theory that the wt society is pushing onto rank and file jehovah's witnesses since last year this article i found really heavy hitting in the jw version of the wt.
the wt society is leaking oil in that confidence is low among jw's in not really buying into the " generation overlap " theory as many younger jw's are exiting the organization.
so what better way to try reeling members back in by giving them an article entitled " do not deceive yourself with false reasoning " !
"Ya, but Mr. Freeze, they can always fall back on this one:"
"...Even if it should delay, keep in expectation of it; for it will without fail come true. It will not be late."-Habakkuk 2:3 New World Translation
Or simply put, delay is the same as late. So, if it delaysit islate.
By the way Mary, don't give them any ideas.

Fresh prince of ohio: "Are the people who write these articles completely full of shit?"
Nope. They're made of it. There's a huge difference between someone bloated with constipation and a statue carved from nothing but feces.
