If you're a freshman in the true sense of the word, meaning 18 years-old, I wouldn't worry so much about the job market in your given career. I would worry about getting the best grades you can and staying off of Facebook. Meaning don't post anything you don't want your future employer to find in a background search. No beer drinking, no naked pics, no stories of drugs. No stupid sh%t you wouldn't tell them about. Facebook and every other social networking site will be looked at by every company doing a background search. Any, and everything you post is fair game.
I would try to get a part-time job. Even serving coffee. Internships, volunteer, etc. Anything to show an employeer that you are willing to be a team-player and you work well with other people and are willing to do crap as well as your given *career*.
If your career is engineering, you have a much better chance of getting a job than if it is in, oh, say Art Appreciation.
College can and should be fun. However, if it is too much fun, you'll be there for 5 years which not only adds to the cost but puts your career on hold. Plus, you are there to learn not party. (speaking from experience. )

Any former HLC people here? Or know of any personally?
by Mad Sweeney ini'm wondering whether hlc members have "report interesting cases to the society" as part of their duties.. there is a typical jw chain email going around right now about a blood doctrine victim in kansas named shay brooks.
the email is written in such borg writing department style that i suspect it wasn't started by an actual friend of the victim's family but rather by writers at bethel, who then leak the story out into the email grapevine of jws, letting it take on a life of its own.. a little digging confirms that a 13 year old boy by the name of shay brooks died in january in wichita, ks, usa, and the online obituary comments show that he was indeed a jw kid who "died faithful" to the borg.. but there are comments in the circulating email that make me suspicious about the veracity of the details surrounding this poor kid's experience.
one thing it says is that he went to the hospital with a nosebleed and was diagnosed with "the kind of leukemia that only gives you a matter of days.

I am curious why JWs don't run Obits in the local newspapers?
I know for sure that no one in my family has ever had an Obit run when they died. They were all JWs. The only way one knew they died was the Legacy.com thing.
This is the one for Shay Brooks. The notes people have left, from all over the US, are telling.

White trash?
These could be my relatives. Just with different accents. Oh, and they are skinnier. I couldn't understand a word the girl in the black bikini said. Her words were unintelligible. Most of them were unintelligible.
I'm sure someone will come up with the next Jersey Shore:
Hooterville Hell?

Boys & Girls
by snowbird inin one of his masterful pieces on the through a darkened pane thread, compound complex made the following observation:.
boys typically break the rules, do as they please to offend authority and cast aside all well-intended parental dominion.
after witnessing the childhood and adolescence of my two g'sons, i agree with him wholeheartedly.. do you?.

You never met my sister.
She, as a child, did all she could to offend all parental authority. Her stated MO, as she recently confessed to me, was to make their lives a living hell. Why? Just because. She got into fights (physical) with other girls. Fist fights. Knock down, fist fights. She got expelled her senior year of HS.
Brain chemistry? Personality disorder? Take your pick.
I have met other women like her and will never understand them. Ever.

Hi Robdar,
Tax Dollars. Our tax dollars allow politicians, who want to stay in power, to *negotiate* contracts. The politicians are only giving the union bosses what *they* want. Union assured votes for said politian. It has been a never ending cycle. Seemingly.
I have been in two separate unions. I know how hard it is to fire a union member. It is almost impossible. One was stealing from the compnay. I had him on camera. For months I monitored and documented his actions. I was not his supervisor, just a worker. I was also the union rep which put me in a bind. They (The union guys) wanted me to lie and destroy the film. I wouldn't and was really put into a tough situation. In the end, it took over 3 months, with him being on paid leave, for the investigation and union reps to come in etc. He was fired with full pension. He had been there for 15 years. In the private sector he would have been out the door and perhaps prosecuted. He stole over $15,000 worth of product and customers.
It is even harder to fire a teacher or cop who has union reps. I could find stories, but, why bother? No one here wants to believe it.
My attitude is not "I don't have it why should they", my attitude is "I'm a taxpayer and our state is broke". They are employees of the state and the state, as their employer can no longer afford the ridiculous terms that were negotiated by the previous crooks in office. Between pay and benefits, those state and local workers are suitable for WalMart. Maybe. They are lucky the Neotism system has worked so far. Most of them are lazy and not at all happy to help you when you go to their place of work. They don't give you proper information and they don't do their jobs well. Again, in the private sector, they would be immediately fired and a new person put in their place who would try harder and be happy.
Are all WalMart workers happy? No. Are Target workers? Mostly. I haven't had a negative experience at Target. I have at WalMart.
I just want them to paid realistically. Like the rest of America is. Having the local taxpayer fund their pension fund and pay 100% for their insurance is crazy!! The local governments simply cannot afford it.

In Illinois and especially Chicago, the unions have a strangle hold on the city. Yes, the politicians got us into this. That does not mean that we should continue on like sheep and just sit back and take it.
I sent the following article to my Mom who, being a typical JW does not pay attention to the local news:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-civic-pensions-0210-20110209,0,3198498.story The city of Chicago is $23 BILLION in the hole to Union Pension Plans: The Civic Federation releases a report showing the unfunded liabilities for 10 city and county pension funds grew sixfold from 2000 to 2009, with shortfalls now totaling nearly $23 billion, or $11,000 per Chicago resident. As the article states, she will be facing property tax increases and reduced services in Chicago. All because of the pensions that crooked politicians cooked up with Union Bosses--to keep them both in power. And funded with OUR TAX Dollars. Why is everyone putting their heads in the sand? This has happened all over the US. I, for one, see no reason for unions in a government environment. Is the government going to put the workers at risk? Is the government going to treat them so bad? They can leave just like any other employee and get another job. Why on earth does a group of government employees need collective bargaining? Why shouldn't they pay into their own retirement plan, like I do? Why shouldn't they pay for apart of their own insurance, like I do? Why shouldn't they be fired for doing a shitty job, like I can be? Why can't they negotiate their pay, like I do? Why do they need a Union negotiating everything for them? Bottom line? They don't. The union bosses need their money to pay the politians and the politicians need the union money to purchase their positions.
