It's actually worse than you think!
The Earth is tilted on its axis just over 23° from the perpendicular.
It's all part of a cycle that sees the angle range from around 21° to just over 24°. It is known as the Milankovitch Cycle and occurs over millions of years.
This tilt may have been caused when an enormous meteor slammed into the Earth several billion years ago. The impact was so great that the surface of the Earth became molten
and a huge amount of material was shot into space where it eventually coalesced into the Moon.
Anyway it's a good thing, this tilt. It gives us our seasons as it causes a differential in the amount of sunlight any particular part of the Earth receives as it progress through its orbit of the Sun.
this question is for those who have attended another church since leaving the jw's.. i have considered attending a local church, firstly out of curiosity and secondly because i do enjoy discussing the bible with people and learning new thoughts on scripture.. the only thing that stops me though is crossing that line.
i guess it was a bit like when i first posted here, it took me ages to pluck up the courage and now what was the big deal?.

A couple of years ago when I was in Paris I went to the Notre Dame Cathedral. I was mighty impressed with its grandeur and antiquity (~1000 yrs old).
While my gf and I were there they started a mass service so we sat through down and participated.
Didn't understand a word - it was in French of course - but I thought it was very impressive.
Something about a 1000 year old building and those ancient rites.
Still an atheist though.

It always annoys me when theists make this claim. So it's only atheists who lie, steal, cheat, assault and murder others? There's no believers before the courts and in jail? It is intrinsic to humanity to know how to treat your fellow humans properly. If I was to punch you on the nose, I do so knowing that you will most likely do the same to me. If I was to buy you a beer, then there is a high probability that you will do the same for me. This basic tenant predates religion.

firstly....i have a problem here and have for years.
i am prob part of a big jw club based on how all my old friends drink.
but nightly i self medicate (nice term for gettin seriously buzzed to drunk).

Sounds so awfully simple and cold-hearted, doesn't it? I wish it was so simple.
That's what worked for me. As you say s100, it's not at all easy. But it is possible.
I tried addiction therapy until I realised that I liked getting wasted. It was the only time that life didn't hurt so bad. But it's a pretty shitty way of existing and in the long run it just contributes to the rest of your problems. Drinking so much that you wake up in the garden covered in frost with no idea how you got there is not good!
I also realised that no one else can tell me how to be me. It's entirely up to me to work it for myself.
So I decided one day, about 7 years ago, that I was done with that way of life. And mostly I am. I still drink socially with friends, but I don't get smashed. I go weeks and months at a time without touching a drop.
It's a lot cheaper too!
