Elder father sent me an email about Feb 2012 WT - my resposne
by TheStumbler ini'm not sure if any of you will remember but i posted on here six months ago about a correspondence i was having with my dad, an elder, about who would die in armageddon.
i was asking some tough questions about children being killed in armageddon and i could tell he uncomfortable with the answers he was giving.. i drafted an email in resposne to his email but in the end i decided not to send it in the interest of maintaining friendly relations.. .
last week, out of the blue, my dad sent an email link to the february 2012 watchtower article about armageddon and said it would answer some of my questions.. here is my response which is a critique of the feb 2012 wt article and some of the broader ethics concerning 'armageddon'.

Evil Spirits
by LizLA indoes anyone on this forum have knowledge about casting out demons or evil spirits?
there's at least two of them that have been harrasing me even before i was a jw.
i recently attended a deliverance church to find some help but it was apparent that the holy spirit was missing from that church.

The WT, the Millerites and Orson Wells
by Aussie Oz init is well known of course that ct russell was a fan of william miller and the mans teachings.
indeed his colaboration with millerite nelson barbour cemented russells love of all that was millerism.. i recall some time ago a thread wherin it was mentioned that fred franz had a library stuffed full of millerite books and so on, and that he himself modeled his own style of address and writing after william miller himself.. with that sort of impact on the doctrines and teaching methods adopted by the society at that time, i am also wondering about orson wells book 1984.. could it be plausable that this book also has its place on the shelves of some locked away private library?
published in 1949, the wt leadership has had plenty of time to study the methods of the novel and try them out.

It doesn't surprise me that witnesses don't know anything about Miller. I reckon Russell and Rutherfraud would go the same way if it was possible.

Any actual Witnesses here?
by trthskr ini found this site hoping to read topics submitted by jw's so i could learn more, but it just seems to be everyone else here except them.
just about every topic and member is just bashing jw's and their teachings.
this site should be renamed "jwbashertrolls.net".

Had very intense discussion with Mum
by Qcmbr inmy mum is hard core lds and of all the family (3 boys 1 girl) i was the favoured son from a religious view point.
my defection to the atheist side has hit her hard since i was the one who married in the temple, served a mission, was the wards elder's qurum president etc.
we've never really talked face to face but she's been using the usual long distance stealth tactics (christmas presents of church quotes, church dvds, mormon abc type books for the smallest and inviting the kids to church activities while having covert one on one 'what shall we do?

I sometimes wonder when religious people say "you must have respect for my beliefs" they confuse having respect for their right to hold them and respecting the actual beliefs per se. I don't understand why there would be an expectation that anyone would show respect for something they found unsupportable or even ridiculous. Have respect for the person sure, or their rights, but their beliefs?
There seems to be an underlying assumption that the act of questioning or challenging beliefs is in someway 'disrespectful'. I can see that it might be done in a disrespectful manner, but I can't see how simply raising questions is intrinsically disrespectful.

Hang on - missed that. Which views have been supported by which mental health professionals?
Hi Qcmbr
I meant the idea that influence by (let's say) 'discarnate entities' is possible.
Now I am not saying this is an authority, but you may find it food-for-thought (or not, depending on how open to the idea you are): This book was written by a guy called Carl Wickland http://new-birth.net/booklet/30_years_among_the_dead.PDF (cheerful title I know) - he was a psychiatrist (some background from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Wickland). I am not saying this is fact but I found his research interesting. I don't quite know what to make of it myself.
There are other examples of psychiatric and psychotherapists recommending using exorcism (for example) as a therapeutic method although by no means all the references I checked indicated that they viewed this as anything more than a method to assist someone they felt was suffering from a delusion.
Even the catholic church recommends a sufferer seeing a psychiatrist before exorcism may be considered.
As to what Shelby and Tec are saying, I think what they are describing is a subjective experience basically. There seems to be no way to validate it unless it conveys veridical information that they could not have received by any normal method. That doesn't mean it isn't 'real' necessarily, just that there is no way to be sure (for anyone other than the receiver). It can only be ruled out if it can be proved to be impossible, which of course it cannot. That isn't the same as saying it is 'real' in a sense that would be meaningful to anyone else of course.

I think some of what Shelby was saying, at least in part (apologies if I get this wrong), is that some of those claiming any kind of 'spirit' communication are reporting their own experiences and that we should at least consider it from their perspective . I would hope most folks would think it unreasonable to expect anyone to simply on the face of it accept that such communications are what is claimed for them, particularly as there is usually no objective evidence, however this doesn't make such communications delusional of necessity. That is unless one is of the opinion that such communications are impossible. That position is, for many people, including some scientists, somewhat open to debate.
I don't think it is wrong to suggest people such as the OP may be delusional or have some mental disorder which should be investigated, however to suggest that is definitely the case and that is the end of the matter, rejects the experiences of countless people who have had such experiences and consider them to be real and not delusional and in some instances their view has been supported by mental health professionals. If a person is hearing voices, is there a good chance it is a result of some mental disorder - of course there is. Should they consult a mental health professional? It would be wise, particularly if the person is a risk to others or themselves? Is this the only explanation? Personally, I don't think that is necessarily the case, but it is a prudent place to start.

Bones dating from his family were found.
Even if they had the bones dated to perfection, (which is itself a big question mark) - how would anyone know they were from Jesus family?
maybe Jesus has a man's body with female DNA? Lol
