"5 Myths Atheists Believe about Religion"
by leavingwt ini think this article provides enough red meat for an interesting discussion.
as the title suggests, the author discusses five main points.. .
below, i've quoted one of his five points.

@ botchtower society: I think that article is ludicrous. There are bigger things to worry about than what a street is named. I couldn't care less. If all of those 7 firefighters were believers, then the sign would be fitting because it honors what THEY believed. I think some people (atheists included) like to nitpick on stupid things just to stir the pot. I also think that if an atheist group would like to honor those fallen heroes, they should do so in their own way. If not, then STFU and let people honor them. At least they're being honored and not forgotten!!

FADERS: How determined are you?
by VampireDCLXV inafter being here on jwn for a while, one does see a spectrum of sorts.
there are people here in various stages of their exit from their lives as jws.
some are full fledged kh and fs attendees whom we call "the conscious class".

How determined are you to never return to life as a JW?
I'd have it chiseled in stone if I could afford it.
Do you still miss old JW "friends"?
No. I don't miss judgemental and superficial people who would drop me in a New York minute the minute I did something that MY conscience allows, but theirs doesn't...and who would be a flock of stool pigeons cooing to the elders at the first sign of dissent.
Do you miss the company of JW relatives?
I still talk to JW relatives because I'm just faded... And I'm moving away partially to live my life without being under the watchful eye of ANY JW, relatives included. I also have some former JW relatives, and one who is stuck in, and we keep in touch.
Do even the smallest of thoughts that maybe, just maybe, the JWs are right about some things, still haunt the darkest corners of you mind?
No. Not at all. I'm certain that I'm on the right path for myself, and that's what matters.
Do you still have the occasional nightmare about dying during the big A?
I quit believing in the Big A in my early to mid twenties.
Lingering doubts might be sabotaging you. The sooner you shed your doubts about yourself and the reasons your leaving, the sooner you can heal.
No doubts here, but I agree with the sentiment. A person cannot fully heal and join the human race post-cult until they face their fears and doubts and banish them altogether.
So I ask faders here again: how far along are you in your exit and are you doubting yourself?
I've been out for about a year (almost). No doubts, no regrets, I'm happier than I've ever been and I feel like I've lost the millstone around my neck that was the Watchtower Society.
If, through unforeseen circumstances, there was a risk of DF that would result in a choice between your freedom and your friends/family, would you "return to the fold" to appease them?
Wild horses couldn't drag me back into the cult. My family would just have to kindly f*ck off if they made the decision to shun me.
If congregation or family was harassing you to the point of it driving you mad, would you consider DA to save your sanity?
You bet your sweet bippy, I would!!

Mr. Snowbird and I Are Reconciling
by snowbird inwe've agreed to compromise on our differences and support each other through the years we have left.. i'm seeing a psychiatrist today to deal with my difficulties that stem from a traumatic and tumultuous childhood.. he is willing to yield in his beliefs that a man should control everything and make all the decisions.. being a stubborn jamaican, i realize how hard that is for him.. we're going to renovate the house so that he has his own quarters.. that way, my boisterous g'kids won't work his nerves too badly.. just wanted to put it out there.. syl.

I had a feeling this was brewing when you posted about the chicken salad, Syl! LMAO
I'm happy for you and I hope that you find contentment with each other.
Even though I'm a young'un, I've learned through a marriage, a divorce, and a few crappy relationships that accepting the whole person (warts and all) and appreciating the effort they put in when they're trying to do right by you really helps. Little things are just that, little things. In the grand scheme of things, I really don't care if my bf picks his toenails or scratches his ass. Because the greater things he does, the support he gives me, make those things mean nothing.
I'm glad Mr. SB is going to try and put in the effort to let the reigns loosen up. That shows growth on his part as a person. I wish you both happiness and joy in your remaining years in this life!

Convention without a 'Badge'
by IMHO ini attended a convention recently but didn't wear a badge i was treated with the utmost suspicion.
particularly when i arrived during the sessions one day.
the attendant didn't want me wandering off to find a seat on my own.

I know someone who was studying but had been associated with the JW's for over 30 years. He went to a convention and was a bit late and hadn't had his morning coffee. Well, he went outside to the coffee shop and got coffee for himself and his family (3 coffees in all), and when he came back in and was about to go into the arena, an attendant stopped him and told him he couldn't bring that inside! Yet, a JW man with a family in tow and a LOT more coffees and frozen coffee drinks in hand was allowed to waltz right in!! The attendant looked at the student and said "This isn't a sporting event". The guy acted like he was coming in with a damn beer helmet and foam finger that said "JAH #1!"
Last year when I went, I didn't wear a badge and had a facial piercing...one guy (who was totally flirting) said "So, how do you like the convention so far? How long have you been studying?" ROFL I'd been baptized for 15 years.

Why do I no longer get attacked and persecuted by the demons, since I left JW,s ?
by pedal power inmost jw.s really believe that they ( as we once did ) are promoting gods will, but what if they really are ?
is it possible that god is supporting them even though they (governing body ) lie, because most jw,s are ignorant of the lies told on their behalf, ?.
when i was a jw i got attacked by the demons bigtime, but not now, and i can only assume that they (demons ) are happy that i am no longer a jw and are now leaving me alone, cant think of any other reason, has god ever supported a group who were similarly found wanting ?.

@ mostlydead and FoundSheep: I have a personal belief about those things. It's not for everyone, but I think that when we die, our energy doesn't die with our physical body. Some might call it a "spirit", but whatever, I think it has a scientific basis that's yet to be discovered. Whatever energy a person put out when they were living is what is carried on after the physical body dies. So, a person who was an ass or a mean-spirited person in life and liked to torture others for their own amusement, would find pulling a trick like what FoundSheep experienced to be quite funny. A person who was pure evil, such as a murderer or rapist, would continue to be so after death and find their thrills in torturing people in whatever ways they can, considering their limitations without a physical body.
Some will find this belief ludicrous, and that's okay. I don't think they have to do with any "god", good or evil. I think it's something that just "is".

I had "demon experiences" when I was young. I saw an 8 foot tall man in my room, I could see right through him into the kitchen. I was so scared I pissed myself. I also felt someone lay down next to me, felt the rise and fall of their body "breathing", but when I reached behind me, there was no one there.
I was about 8 years old on both counts. I was petrified of Satan and the demons.
Now, as an unbelieving adult, I realize those things were either contacts from some sort of "spirit realm" (I do believe that exists, even as an atheist), or they were all in my head. But, I know what I saw and felt...doesn't mean it was real, though.
Now that I no longer believe in those things, I freely watch what I want (True Blood is a favorite!) without worrying that I'm going to go to bed and be attacked by demons. A door shutting on it's own is the wind, not a demon...etc.
The thing that worries me about your post, pedal, is that although you are "out", you are mentally still in to an extent. We've all been there. The Watchtower ingrained in us the belief that if you leave the "Truth", that you're making yourself subject to harrassment by demons and Satan. But if you stay in, although you have Jehovah's protection, you can still be harrassed. They speak out both sides of their mouth. A person who leaves has nothing but trouble and turmoil because they no longer have Holy Spirit. Yet, when someone leaves and is doing very well and is happy, "Satan puts things in front of people to distract them from serving Jehovah" and "Satan rewards his servants"...but isn't Satan a god of darkness?? So why would people be doing WELL after leaving? We should all be miserable!
I'm going to do what a lot of others on this forum do...I'm going to recommend you find and read "Combatting Cult Mind Control" by Steven Hassan. It's helped SO MANY of us. Also, for a better understanding of the Society and why it's NOT the "Truth", read "Crisis of Conscience" by Ray Franz.

The J Dub Culture of Skirt-Wearing
by mummatron inthis is something that has always bothered me.
as a born-in jw i was raised as a little girl wearing skirts and dresses which is clearly quite normal in terms of gender-appropriate clothing.
however, the older i grew, the more i realised that all jw women and girls wore skirts to meetings and when out in fs, but would wear trousers in their everyday life.

LMAO I agree with jeckle, Found Sheep . Rawr . And that's coming from a straight woman LMAO!
Now I'm whistling "Walk Like and Egyptian"...
@ White Dove: Your style sounds similar to mine... I'm kind of goth/rock chicky. Dark nail polish, I wear a lot of black clothing (mostly shirts) and dark purple (my color). My hair...well, I've let it grow and colored it lighter, but everyone tells me they liked my asymmetrical chopped look with my black hair. I liked it too, but (no offense here!) I kept getting mistaken for a lesbian because of the short spikes in back. At the time, I was looking for a boyfriend and, well...that wasn't helping lol. Now that I have one, I'm thinking I might go back to that and instead of getting it spiked in the back, I might get it stacked and leave the front asymmetrical.

I just looked up Fathers' Day on Wikipedia and read the history...
Wouldn't you know it?? There's NOTHING scripturally wrong with it! Mothers' Day, either! Just something else the WTBTS wants to take away from people to enforce their control.
Damn cult.
