How Science has advanced since the Victorian Era...
by ziddina inbuttonhooks, steam-run horseless carriages, corsets, steamships, gaslight streetlights, wax candles..... these things were considered the 'latest' in "modern conveniences" during the victorian era.. the victorian era also ushered in some exciting new scientific discoveries and inventions - uranium, x-rays, electric telegraphs, bicycles, and a good part of the industrial revolution.. of course, nowadays we wouldn't dream of using buttonhooks to 'button up' our shoes, nor would we even consider having a steam-powered "horseless carriage" in our garage.. we wouldn't allow a dentist to work on us using 19th-century tools or techniques, nor would we trust a psychologist who insisted on using "phrenology" to determine why we have mood swings or depressions....

Robert7, please do NOT allow SPARKY to be "PUT DOWN"!!!!!!
by ziddina inrobert, i've given you my contact information and i'm going to pm it again - please please please pass it along to whomever has the cat right now.. i have pets, and it would kill me to think that, if i were dreadfully sick or lay dying, that my beloved pets were going to be dumped into an animal pound or put down, just because no one would take them..... to you, perhaps, it's just a cat, but the cat was oompa's 'friend', and i'd like to try to save him.. as to 'biting' - heck, i've two cats right now who are - actually, were - 'biters'.
they both stopped biting after they'd been here in a loving, stable environment for a while - well, that, and when they bit me, i grabbed 'em by the scruff and told them in no uncertain terms that that sort of behavior would not be tolerated.... both have stopped biting - well, chomper [guess how he got his name?
] still gives me little 'love nips', but nothing like he used to.... so please, let's not write off oompa's cat yet!!!.

"Truth Be Told" - the movie...
by ziddina inwell, i had the rare opportunity to see this movie tonight, and i would highly recommed it for all ex-jehovah's witnesses!!!.
the documentary film basically consisted of a series of interviews with ex-jehovah's witnesses.. instead of having one interview with the first person, then proceedeing on to the next one, however, mr. smith put together footage from each interview specific to a topic - what it was like being a small child when the parents converted, what it was like being dragged to the meetings and out in "service" as a small child, what it was like missing out on christmas, birthdays and other fun holidays, what it was like going to school and feeling different or isolated, what it was like being denied - "discouraged" - from getting a college education, what it was like dating - or "non-dating" in the religion, what it was like having one's sexual behaviors controlled and censured, what it was like being disfellowshipped, and so on.... as the film's director, gregorio smith said, his "target audience" was three-fold.... ex-jehovah's witnesses, who would be most likely to identify with the people in the film.... non-jehovah's witnesses - "worldly" people - who are interested in or might be considering joining the religion.... and the group least likely to actually see the movie - active jehovah's witnesses - however, disenchanted jws and those considering an exit might be more likely to view it.. it was well done.
the movie used a somewhat non-threatening approach, as opposed to a confrontational or sensationalistic technique.. there wasn't anything actually new in the movie's information, though one comment made by a young man - gregorio's brother, i think - really hit home... regarding the practice of making small children go door-to-door proselytising, he said:.
