social outcasts, or possible geniuses, is it really so bad to be 'different'? (Asperger's & Autism)
by Adalwolfa ini've posted this already under another topic but thought to do it again and maybe open up an honest discussion.. my son has been diagnosed with asperger's syndrome or borderline autism.
since then i've read just about anything i could lay my hands on.
the thing is he is very bright but doesn't mix very well socially.

Famous celebs such as Dan Akroyd and Darryl Hannah also have Aspergers.
Aspergers is on the autism spectrum, but is high functioning. My oldest son presents as Aspergers, and my youngest also the same, but more PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified) which basically means he fits alot of categories of Aspergers/autism but doesn't 'fit nicely' in one particular area. Both were diagnosed by a world renowned Professor (psychology).
Children/adults with Aspergers are usually classed as 'socially awkward', in that what is normal behaviour to them is not normal to the everyday person. They need to be taught social cues - and it can be done. Many go on to marry and have families of their own. Most are extremely bright, particularly in their 'subject of interest'. They may go on and on and on about their favourite topic, interrupt conversations, go off on tangents, changing the topic to something of interest to them. They may also stand too close, not realise personal space. Their brains are wired completely differently.
Cantleave, first step is getting that diagnosis, which I know is a long road in itself. Next step is behavioural therapy if he needs help with how to control his emotions. Most Aspergers children have lots of frustration because they can't get their point across properly. Some also have anger problems. All comes down to frustration and what's going on inside their head that we can't see. I've also found that occupational therapy has helped immensely with my sons. My oldest for instance, has fine motor skills trouble, typical of Aspergers. Another area where they often lack is in comprehending speech. They may have a huge vocabulary, speak extremely well BUT often don't understand the context of what is being said or asked of them.
If you can find a good psychologist, they should be able to point you in the right direction. There is alot of help out there, but if you are like me, it is all very overwhelming when you first look at it. You're right, got to find that inner genius with your son. The trick is harnessing it and professionals will be able to help. Just hang in there

Will there be more KH closings?
by Gayle inhttp://www.patriotledger.com/news/x686278928/marshfield-religious-landmark-up-for-sale.
with local membership declining, the congregation has merged with the kingdom hall in rockland.. .
said the two congregations recently decided to combine to be spiritually stronger ... so we can continue to do our preaching work, and take care of one another.. .

KHs are empty over here. Ones around here were made to seat up to 250 people each, yet at most meetings, there are barely 30 people. Most are built as 'complexes' which usually have 2 halls joined by a foyer, and 4 congregations meet. For many years people have asked why they don't combine the congregations, but due to territory size, that hasn't happened.
So, each meeting, those 30 odd people spread themselves out amongst 250 seats. Visitors must think it's hilarious seeing so many empty chairs.

Russian JWs in Serious Trouble - about to be banned
by Dogpatch inalthough it has been leading up to this for a long time, it appears russia has made up their mind to get rid of "extremist" groups by banning them, and jws are pretty much at the top of the list.
the last few years under putin they have been giving them heaps of trouble.. .
i am not for bans as it usually backfires, but under the "new" admnistration it looks like hard-core responses are in order.

King of North Russia? King of South Korea? I never quite understood all that King stuff. My dad would try and explain, but I'd tune out, just not grasping it. Robdar made sense with his post about those of us who still have relatives that are witnesses. I don't want to see my family suffer. I'm all for freedom of speech. If they are banned in Russia, then where next? The precedent will have been set. Big nation like that making worldwide news as banning witnesses will lead the way for other nations to take a closer look at Jw's. As a new fader, this is all a bit scary to be honest

Impossible to concentrate!
by highdose inlooking back on my time as a jw i found that i sat at the meetings just willing the time to go past and just trying to get through it.
there would be a blip were i would concentrate on getting my answer in, just so that others didn't look down on me even more than they already did, but after that i would go back to sleep.. the thing is i was a very serious jw, and really did want to pay attention... i just found it to be impossible, 5 mins at the max and then drift away.... i even perfected the art of staring intently at the speaker while having my mind very much elsewhere.
and i wonder now how many jw's are actauly listening at all?.

Lol I was pretty much the same. My mind always wandered. I remember as a kid dad telling us not to let this happen. To quickly redirect our thought back to the information. But it was hard. He'd ask us after every meeting on the car ride home, 'what did you learn?'. I hated that part. So I'd spend my last few mins of meeting time preparing in my head what to say to dad...lol. I think there will alot who don't pay attention.
