I was wanting to do something similar for a personal project I'm going to be working on. If anyone knows an artist who can duplicate the WT style let me know! :-)

I have read some of Bart's books, but not God's Problem. In my opinion his books are often inflated in importance. It seems like every Easter he has a new hardcover on the shelf with the publisher claiming to offer some earth-shatering secrets on Christianity or the Bible. Then when you get the book it just a retread of dusty old scholarship and the same old Bible discrepencies that have been bandied about for a century or more. His books are easy reads and may give a person a different perspective but for every one of his passioned arguments you'll find another "scholar" who can give an equally passionate rebuttal. If your faith matters to you, I wouldn't put my trust in Ehrman, or any man for that matter.

How to prepare for a JC defense
by brotherdan inmany of you have heard this recording, but i wanted to post it again for some of you (bottleofwater) that will possibily be in jc's soon.
rick townsend does an excellent job (imo) of attempting to defend his position to the elders.
in nearly every category his arguments are stronger.. it is a bit frustrating to listen to because of the elders lack of reasoning ability, but rick is amazing.

I had a horrible JC experience but I'm absolutely glad that I went and stood up for the Truth. I learned first hand a little bit more about what it means not to prepare a defense and allow the Holy Spirit to speak for you. If you are called to bear witness to the Truth I wouldn't avoid it. Would gladly do it all over again.

@Smoky
It may be that they sincerely want to visit with you and see how you are doing; however, don't discount the idea that they might be stopping by to see how you feel about "Jehovah's Organization" with the idea of getting you back to the meetings or disfellowshipping you. You asked, "Should I be worried?" I assume that meant you still want to remain a Witness, officially, while still being inactive.
If it was simply one elder dropping by I wouldn't worry too much. If there are two elders than they might be making an investigation visit. If you don't want to be disfellowshipped you need to be very, very guarded with what you say to them. You would want to avoid expressing any doubts over their practices or teachings. You specifically need to avoid the question, "Do you believe this is Jehovah's Organization?". You also need to be careful if they try to put you in a corner by asking, "Do you still feel you are one of Jehovah's Witnesses?" What they may be doing is trying to lead you into a line of conversation where you will disassociate yourself by word.
I don't know your reason for being out for five years but the the explanation that they will accept the best would be discouragement over how people treated you. Alternatively you could talk about depression or getting distracted with work and life or something like that.
It might be best to put off the meeting and see how persistant they are to meet with you. Unless they are on witch hunt, Elders can be pretty unzealous about their theocratic routines. In the new elder's book they are specificly counseled against spending too much time with "chronic cases". If you put off their visit they might lose interest.

Where to post the new Elder Manual
by Elsewhere ini've noticed some here expressing difficulty finding a good place to host the new elder's manual.. the solution is simple: wikileaks.
wikileaks is a site that specializes in hosting controversial and secret content that needs to be made public.. http://wikileaks.org/.
http://wikileaks.org/media/submissions.html.

I think Wikileaks currently has turned all their resources toward the release of the Iraq War Diaries. It has been reported that there is internal criticism that by focusing on big headline stories like this it was drawing away from other, smaller yet important documents. Maybe when the clamor over this Iraq leak subsides the site will return to normal.

I had conversation over the weekend with a sincere young man that claimed that every human ever living that didn't hear the gospel message and accept Jesus as a personal savior are going to hell.

Thought stopper: "We are the only ones doing what Jesus did."
by sabastious inthis is one of the top thought stopping phrases here.. it invalidates any argument presented against the organization.
it basically says this:.
"it doesn't matter who did what in the org, it doesn't matter how bad things get, we are the only ones doing what jesus did, therefore all errors and corruption are disregarded as we await the end.".

Very true. Most conversations with JW's about the flaws of the Organization lead down to this and when they say the "preaching work", they primarily think of going house-to-house, door-to-door. I think this is one reason why the door-to-door method has become a staple even though it is having diminishing returns.
The reality is very easy to deconstruct even though most Witnesses are unwilling to go there. Jesus didn't engage in a preaching work in the same manner as Witnesses do today. In fact the Bible contains an explicit instruction that his apostles "not be transfering from house to house". Even if the manner was correct the good news message that Witnesses claim to preach is not the same preached by Jesus and those after him.
Jesus did say that his followers would be identified, not by the preaching work, but by their love. Are Jehovah's Witnesses today characterized by their love? I know most JW's would say "yes, definitely" and could maybe cite some examples about not going to war or helping out in times of crisis. Put the same question to some of their abandoned elderly brothers and sisters rotting in nursing homes and you might get a different answer.

Do people really think that the Watchtower is going to take a person to court for quoting part of their publication in a personal letter to a family member and not properly attributing the source material? Really?
