Right on all counts. As an Elder for 6 years I assure you they have NO training to deal with ANYTHING - Spiritual, Mental, or Emotional. Some try really hard and really care for the people the try to help, but NONE have any idea how to help someone with real problems. Allelsefails

Need help disproving 607BCE
by 2pink ini hope i am posting in the right board.. anyway, i am newly out of the org, and have a dear friend who i've been speaking to all along about my thought process/decisions.
she has been hesitantly receptive (how's that for confusing?!
lol) and when i brought up 607bce to her yesterday, she was truly intrigued and had not heard of this as a false date before.. she is still half in/half out, so i know she isn't going to do a lot of naughty independent research on her own.

For me the arguement is simple. The WTS says open the Encyclopedia to find out about Christmas, Easter, etc... So open any Encyclopedia to find out about this date NONE will say 607 ALL I have found say 586/587. That is what started every bit of questioning for me. Allelsefails

The WTS's endpoint of the "70 Years"?
by Doug Mason in1. does the wts date the end the 70 years as soon as the babylonian exiles returned to the land, or when they started the building of the altar?.
(ezra 2:68 makes it clear that the returnees arrived early enough for the exiles to be settled in their own towns (verse 70) well before they started to build the altar in the seventh month of an unidentified year (3:1)).. .
2. why were the returnees frightened of the people around them when they started to build the altar (ezra 3:3)?

It is a bunch of crap. They don't apply any meaning to the rebuilding of the Altar - only Destruction of Jerusalem to return of exiles = 70 years.

Paul's writings are generally considered first. I agree with the fact that it doesn't matter at all which came first. The real question is why do we take a collection of books and call it the BIBLE? There are 66 books that should all stand on there own merit. To pretend there is "A" Bible that you either accept or reject is a recent idea of Christianity. Most early Christians did not accept Revelation, James, Hebrews, 2&3 John as "acceptable" And you won't find any early christian writings that refer to any Greek - NT book as "Scripture". Even if they quote from them it is like a JW quoting from the WT - it has authority but NEVER is inspriration applied to early Christian writings. I've studied this for a while, but if you find something different please let me know. .. .. . .. . Allelsefails

70 years = 607?
by allelsefails in70 years of captivity?.
i myself have always believed that when archaeology disagreed with the bible the bible must be right.
that is how i dismissed the idea that jerusalem was destroyed in 586/587 bce.

Awesome thoughts. JWs are so unique ..... except when there beliefs are shown to be borrowed from spiritists. Pyramidology = Demonism according to Jws today. It is just silly to think about the infallibility of the "Pope" or the "governing body" it is all the same. Allelsefails

This is one of the most frustrating arguements I've had with Witnesses. You can say "read what it says" Why would one part be literal and the other symbolic? What scriptural basis is there for this belief? People who otherwise are intelligent thinking people with good jobs and even (a few) with college educations can't see the idiocy of such a stance. ........... My dog can see why that doesn't make sense!

Please nominate your favourite film and say why you rate it so highly.
by lifelong humanist ini've just watched all 3 parts of francis ford coppola's epic godfather once again.
it is a superb achievement on many levels.
each viewing reveals something new and fresh.. i recall, as a good jw at the time, not seeing it when released as it was not certified as 'suitable' given the content for jws.

Cool Hand Luke - nothing better - Great Escape, Bridge Over the River Kwai - unreal level of acting and story telling. BTW - Tombstone was OK but not 1/2 as good as Unforgiven in the western category. IMHO.

New here
by Heartbreaker ini have no idea what i want to convey in words here on this site, and have surprised myself by even joining at all.
i intended just to read, and get a few pieces of information, and now am a member, and spend many hours looking through posts old and new alike.
i am a current jw, born into it, and lets just say i'm in my thirties, female, and a mom of more than your average kids.

Welcome Heartbreaker. This is definitely a place where you can be yourself. I think with your questions you have started on the path to Christian Freedom. If you feel Birthdas are wrong - you shouldn't celebrate them. If you feel Easter is wrong - ditto. Christams, Independance day, thanksgiving, etc..... It should have always been your decision. (Rom 14) NO Man or group of men should ever influence these decisions. It is like the Governing Body has never read the scriptures sometimes. How is smoking (even tobacco :) a disfellowshipping offense but eating McDonald's NOT. I guarantee the same Bible principles apply to both. These Men have made themselves "Masters of our faith" which Jesus specifically condemned. Welcome to freedom! Allelsefails (if all elsefails try something that makes sense.)
