A 45-year-old UK man has been sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh for sexually abusing a boy.

Thomas Gold has admitted to committing the abuse between November 1996 and November 2003.

The child was 7 years old at the time the abuse started, abuse which continued until he alerted his congregation leaders as a teenager.

Gold, who was unemployed, would take the child out in the door to door preaching of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Instead of alerting authorities of the abuse the leaders of the church informed Gold that his wrong behavior must stop or they would expel him from the congregation.

Interestingly enough, the "wrong behavior" according to church leaders, wasn't that he was molesting a child, but instead his homosexual acts were the issue since the child is a male.

An article at the BBC states the leaders did attempt to persuade Gold to go to the police.

Lord Bannatyne, the judge for the case, spoke of how Gold's criminal conduct placed a "considerable impact" on the victim, and added how the background report on Gold shows he "systematically groomed" the child so he could sexually abuse him.

Gold has been placed on a sex offender’s register where he will remain for the rest of his life. He has been sentenced to serve six years and eight months in prison followed by a 40-month supervision.

This abuse leaves emotional scars which often do not heal, and it is sad to know how so many children are victimized. What is even more disheartening is when we hear about such cases where a trusted member of the community or church member has preyed upon our young people.

This is not the first time the Jehovah's Witnesses, or other religions, have come up in a negative light in regards to sexual abuse. Many feel the Jehovah’s Witness religion tries to cover up such allegations since they are not always reported.

Although the church leaders did urge this man to go to the police with his crimes, why not alert the authorities themselves to protect the boy?

Should the congregation be responsible to report such allegations, or is it up to the family to make such reports?

i read a ton of posts on this site that basically follow the same form: somebody has an argument with a close relative about the "truth" and long, angry e-mails follow thereafter - or heated phone calls - or face to face conversations - and the kitchen sink gets thrown into the mix.. you name it: child molestation, 1914, false prophecy, everything and anything that comes to mind.. no, no, no!

unless you are really committed to losing your witless family or friends, don't hit them with both barrels while you are angry and upset about a lifetime of being duped by the 'truth'.. here's a piece of ancient wisdom - and it applies regardless of whether you are a an agnostic or atheist:.

"i have many things yet to say to you but you are not able to bear them at present" john 16:12. yes, that principle of gradualism still works with people.

Sometimes when we learn things that open our eyes, we want so badly to share that information with those we love. We forget they are still under the mind control of the WTS and wont have any of it.

I almost ruined my relationship with my mother before I took this advice.

How to politely refuse a last chance meeting with the elders?

the elders are giving me a chance to meet up with them a last time in order to try to prevent a disfellowshipping.

one of the elders will call me in two days to see what i think because i told him that i don't want to be in the religion anymore.

how can i politely and painlessly refuse?

Please..just let them do what they are going to do without your help. Any time you give them, will only trouble your mind. They have a way about making you feel dirty and less then, Don't do it..it's so not worth it!! Just let them do their job without further damaging you. In the end they are sinners just like everyone else, so why give them any power over you?

to cut very long story short , my inlaws have not seen my child for 18months we left the area they live 2 years ago after a ex min servant was sent to prison for abusing kids including my eldest child , understandably i wanted a fresh start !

today my jw motherinlaw tried to give her disfellowshipped son ten pounds for our child (her granchild she hasnt seen for 18 months ) he asked her why ?

she told him i told her it was best if they didnt see our child anymore just before i left town (half hour drive away from our new home ) this is not true at all !

I can sympathize with you Looloo :( We seem to have very similar stories.

For me... I can only imagine the talk that is going on behind our back! I'm at the point, I just don't care anymore. If they use me as an excuse to why their relationship with the kids is almost nonexistent, then that's fine as long as it keeps them away from making them feel less then or bad for how we choose to live our life. We keep our visits to a min these days and it's working for us.

Awww man!! I'm so sorry brother Dan.

I agree with the ones who have said to give it some time. It's a shock to her right now, but when she sees your still that great man she loves and married she'll be back.

You both have your lovely children to think about. I think once she stops thinking about how you not being a JW will effect her..she'll wake up to how it will effect her and the children to not have a husband and father around :(

my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.

it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.

Your wife just doesn't want to know the truth about something she trusts with her life. Just do what you have to do for You and your sanity. Hopefully she'll come around, but it will have to be something she is ready to do.
