I agree with you Farkel! I didn't say I thought the Bible was the "word of God" and I didn't say I thought Jesus was God. I think Jesus was an elightned man speaking the language of the people at the time. To me Jesus words and example can stand the test of time, but the Bible can not. It's like if Jesus were to be here today he would speak those same principles in "our language" and some would get it, some would not......wf

The Two Creepy Commandments
by Farkel inthere are a few bible verses i'm going to discuss that probably don't bother anyone but me.
in fact, most people, including ex-dubs think they are wonderful verses.
i think they are really, really creepy verses.

What's with JW's and X-mas lights?..........
by awildflower ini mean i remember growing up as a jw and then 15 baptized adults years, and every year all the jw's would say something to the effect, "lets go look at all the pretty lights", or they would tell their neighbors that they really liked their lights.
and i remember teaching my kids the same thing, that it's ok to look at the lights (but not ok to like anything else about x-mas, oh regrets!
) doesn't that seem weird or something?

Nice array of responses friends. ChickenLittle, I never thought of the lights that way before, but that totally makes since! I love the lights myself, I just feel guilty that I taught my kids that it was ok to enjoy the lights but have nothing else to do with the holiday. I'm happy to report though that my 13 year old daughter and her dad got into x-mas this year. There's a small tree on the table and everyone is slowly gathering gifts. Even though I remain pretty neutral about the whole thing (I have other probs with x-mas besides the one's I've been taught) it makes me feel good to see them doing this together and my daughter having so much fun with it. For one of her presents she actually wrote her dad, me and her brother a personal letter. To me, that would be what this is all about. Can't wait to read it!..........wf

In all seriousness for a minute: could it be that Jesus was just 'speaking their language' at the time? They were used to cold, unbending "commands" and "rules" so taking the whole previous history of these stubborn people, maybe he was speaking words they would know and that they would 'hear'. Then as that sank in, along with the example Jesus set on how to be, then one day they would 'get it'. To me we have to take in a whole context of things to understand why certain things were said the way they were. Just a thought..........wf

Were You Joyful When A Meeting Had To Be Canceled?
by minimus ini was never thrilled to have a meeting during inclement weather.
if it was seriously snowing and the weatherman suggested to stay in because of the conditions, i rarely went to the meeting.
why take a chance, right?

You nailed it Casper, no guilt involved when we felt so guilty about everything. If there are any 'thinking' jw's out here, it would serve as a red flag if your secretly loving the meetings to be canceled. Think about it.

Loved it, but remember during an announcement about a meeting coming up to be canceled that we would all put on kind of a fake frown or something when secretly everyone was glad! Especially when Thursday night meeting would get canceled before the assembly weekend. Party time! .............wf

Isn't it suppose to be wrong? How did we tell our kids that x-mas was evil and yet say that looking at the lights was great?! Seriously I don't get it. My boss told me today that her jw neighbor said to her the other day that she always loves her lights every year...........what?! I just thought you guys could help me out here. I've seen the most devout jw love and admire the x-mas lights every year without it bothering their conscious. It almost has a condescending tone. Any thoughts?...........wf

Where did YHWH Originate?
by cameo-d inseveral biblical scholars have suggested that yahweh originated with a group known as the shasu, canaanite nomads from southern transjordan.
an egyptian inscription at karnak from the time of pharaoh amenhotep iii (1390-1352 b.c.e.
) refers to the "shasu of yhw," evidence that this god was worshiped among some of the shasu tribes at this time.[2].

Read Gregg Braden's The God Code. He has a fantastic take on those Hebrew letters and where they came from and ultimately what they mean....wf

Accepting Christmas gifts
by crapola inhave you ever noticed how the ones that don't celebrate the holidays or give gifts are very quick to accept them from employers, etc?
my mom for instance is already talking about what she will use her christmas bonuses for but frowns on the ones doing the giving.
seems kinda hypocritical to me..

The JW's are hypocritical in sooooo many ways including that one. I always wondered why a JW ex or retired military man would take all the benefits the military had to offer and yet be the first ones to condemn the military?! But I never heard of or seen one of them give back their retirement check or stop shopping on the base or use the medical benefits. Even me being a jw and my husband in the military would justify it by saying "that's what my husband provides for me so........." And yet secretly I loved the military and all it had to offer. Ask your mom if she'd be willing to give her x-mas bonus back!.............wf
