i did a search and came up with some posts related to san francisco, but i couldn't figure out how to find more recent onesthey were from nearly a dozen years ago!
i was wondering if anyone lives around sf, as well as if anyone is around my age?
i'm early 30's.
We are sort of still active (wife and I, in our 30's) and in the bay area (one of the halls in the city)
just adding us to the list :)
in any conversations and dealings you had with organization 'heavies' or their wives, such as cos, dos, missionaries, and so forth, did they ever have a lot of interest in any kind of secular entertainment (movies, tv shows, fiction books, and so forth)?
or did they always discuss only 'spiritual interests'?.
we had a CO recently who quoted Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot in a talk, and his wife referenced SNL a couple of times in an answer
Neither of which I was expecting...
the governing body bank has sold the assembly hall in barcelona city (spain).
now, we have not any en barcelona city!.
where is our money?
Well having been at that hall for assemblies and memorials I can tell you, it was not in good condition. In fact it was closed following flooding during the French district assembly. The city circuits used it as well as English and French. We also had memorials there every year.
I personally loved attending assemblies here - it was on a metro line and there were a lot of Bars around for mid assembly tipples. Now the assemblies are outside the city and there is a feeling of being trapped out there (not that i have been :P)
I do however have good memories of meeting friends around the corner at Cafe Jamaica...
visiting madrid this week, heard an intersiting bit of "theocratic warfare" that'll be going on this summer during the popes visit for the youth festival.. .
witnesses from various halls, both english and spanish are being trained to infultrate the youth conventions to ask "what's going on" and then offer watchtowers/awakes about jesus.. .
there are training sessions at the bethel in torrejon - i have heard this first hand.

I will try and get to one while here on holiday
some time ago i was at a family gathering.
my father and uncles are all long-time elders in their congregations.
when they were discussing they all were 50+ now, one of my uncles said: "i never thought i would come that close to my retirement in this old system of things".
i hear this comment pretty much all the time.
My father said it to me at his mothers funeral 7 years ago
my father said it to me when a long time friend died 2 years ago
my father said it to me when another long time friend died last night.
He retires in a month, and hopefully will wake up one day soon
firstly a wedding/sales talk that mostly features heavily on how the woman should behave (hint, doormat) and lightly brushes over the fact of the husbands bevhaviour ( oh yeah he should treat her well).
the reception normaly at some crummy comunity hall with yellowed ceilings and chucks of damp plaster falling off the walls.
the seats normaly arranged facing eachother all around the edge, so that theres a huge unused space in the middle and everyone is climbing over everyone elses legs to get to their chair.. a big spread donated by everyone, normaly an ode to food poisoning.
Our wedding was a civil ceremony, attended by 40 friends - all of them witnesses. Then a celebration in a restaurant at the beach for 100.
No fuss, it was all over by 10pm, then we went out dancing with a load of brothers till 3am.
We weren't under restriction or anything, just wanted it done our own way - the PO of our congregation said it was the most enjoyable wedding he had been to.
I could tell some horror stories...any will do when I have time :)
if you just want the juicy details where i leave, i'll make disclaimer where it begins, if you just want to know what happened with the elders and organization after i realized it wasn't true, i'll mark that seperately.
we didn't do jack shit in service, or in the congregation.
maybe this was how jehovah came about?
Hi jonathan
I read the whole thing, and admit to tearing up a bit. I find myself getting closer and closer to where you are now regarding wife and family. And it is nice to know there are people my age on the otherside and in 1 piece
thank you
(a little background info before i ask my question...).
my sister-in-law (non-jw), who manages a popular chain restaurant near a kingdom hall, just found out that my wife and i have recently faded, so she decided to get something off her chest the other day... you guessed it: she wanted us to know that jws are the worst customers ever!
she then told us some really embarrassing stories about how jws would request a table for 15 to 20 people (after a sunday meeting) and then (when the bill came) some of the jws would start deliberating amongst themselves on whether or not the waiter was diligent or not (to justify the low tip he was getting anyway).
well - it was the opposite where I was from. I worked in a restaurant through college (*gasp - a dub that went to college). A group of witnesses came in from another town, they were driving back from a zone talk . Anyway, my country doesn't have the tradition of tipping and to be honest - the wage I was on was enough to live (at the time we made 10€ an hour base + whatever tips were given it usually averaged an extra 15-20€ a night).
Anyway, they didn't know I was a witness but i vaguely recognised one of them from being the guy that adjusted the microphones at assemblies and a couple of others as well - they were a group of witnesses, they looked too smartly dressed, though ties were off, for a sunday evening crowd. They came in and asked if there was a chance of some tables. They didn't request a big group table but split the group between 3 or 4 tables. They were polite, had their fair share of drinks and were pretty loud, but no more so than other tables.
The left after their deserts, split the bills evenly on some tables, others i could tell were pay for your own (which when some have a steak, the others a salad is pretty normal). Aside from the bill - which for each table averaged 120€ or so, on one table was a 30€ tip and on one of them - a 50€. On the night i saw that each witness had tipped 10€.
My point is, you can't generalise on diners - jerks come in all sizes
As ex witnesses, or ones on the way out...i think there are an awful lot of other things to keep our grey matter occupied than tips....
"higher education: jesus warned against seeking your own glory.
(john 7:18) whatever you decide as to how much secular education you will obtain, have you made sure of the more important things?phil.
1:9,10.. grzegorz, the computer programmer, made some changes in his life.
after the zone visit, my wife who is slowly waking up (Despite lovebombing in our new hall...) and I were talking. We both agreed that if and when we have children, education is an absolute priority, and also will be our childs choice and no one elses.
Small steps are sometimes the best :)
