  Is Hatred Really Just "Loving Less"?

  the bible says the jacob hated leah, the gal he was tricked into marrying after seven years of hard work at minimum wage.

  for many years watchtower publications have tried to take the sting out of jacob's disdain for wife #1 by saying that he really didn't hate leah, just "loved her less".. i think he hated her.. its not that hard to understand.

  if a man works seven long years, each night going to sleep with visions of a certain bright-eyed girl and then gets stuck with her dull-eyed plain sister, resentment could build.

  Claudia, not that we need to get technical or anything but are you thinking of "natural affection" (part of the sign of the last days) as the NWT terms it? I suppose it goes back to the double standard thing, the brothers are trying despite being imperfect but people in the world are wicked or what have you.

  Actually I think the distinction is important. If I had to look at myself in the area of romantic love, for example, I can't say that I really love every woman I'm attracted to. In fact, if that's all it is it's really a self centered thing on my part. In one sense I love all human beings, but the fact I'm sexually attracted to this person it just means I still have a little bit of hormones left, though I do think there is a feeling that's different in quality when you really love someone who you think is special. I suppose you could say both kinds of love is natural, but the fact I feel sexual attraction doesn't make me a special person..

  I don't have any thoughts about this particular account, but that's a good point about loving less, or not loving at all. Consider what happens when someone is disfellowshipped, you don't project hate, you just don't have anything to do with them, which certainly means not showing any love. So you don't have to hate anyone, but the end result is that the other person is hurt. Then there's the whole issue of hating the practice/message/whatever rather than the person, but it doesn't always turn out that way in practice.. Well anyways, is this kind of what you're getting at?

  Wow, first let me say that's some great artwork on your site Rochelle, you're a really good artist.

  As for this desire to belong, I'd imagine we've all been there at some point. I guess I've come to see that as a superficial kind of belonging, though. I mean what good is being a part of something if you can't be who you are? Sure, if you want to change then you can, but if you do it to fit in it seems there would be something missing too. I think there are people out there who will treat you as a Christian is supposed to in that they really practice loving one's neighbor as yourself. I suppose the idea of Christianity has taken on a different meaning, but from this perspective those people are really the ones giving the religion a bad name. In Buddhism they say it's better to be a Buddha than a Buddhist, unfortunately most Christians don't believe you can be "a Christ", and some will even use that to rationalize not shooting for a standard that's too high. (how you can do that and be a follower of the guy is a mystery to me) In any case, I'd rather be around people who are more concerned with being a kind and loving individual than those who are caught up with religion. Unfortunately many seem to miss the point, and as nice as they are I find that something is missing in them. A local witness has called me recently, and I've gone out with a few of them to eat and hang out. But because they obviously still buy into everything they're taught, I feel kind of bad for them, and when I see that I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything at all. I think this would be the case with "generic" Christians too, even if they're very nice people I think I would feel that I can't connect with them on a certain level.

  i flat out asked the jw i'm studying with what she would do if someone was disfellowshipped and she was honest and said she wouldn't talk to them since they wouldn't be good examples of jehovah witness.

  then we started talking about appearances and tattoos, and about my pink hair :) and she said it didn't matter.

  i am enjoying reading and visiting this web site but i am just not seeing the same things you guys have.

  Tattoo, the thing is it isn't just a matter of shunning, I'm sure we can think of people we'd rather not have anything to do with. But the thing is it isn't your decision, someone else decides whether you're supposed to even talk to this person. It may turn out to be your best friend in the congregation. An announcement will be made and then boom, you'll be forbidden to talk to them.

  Ask them to show you page 92 of the Young People Ask book. Someone here can scan the picture, but while there may not be a definite written rule about tattoos and the like, it is clearly discouraged and frowned upon.
