True religion - anyone have a clue?
by Tin Man inwhat is the true religion anyone have a clue?.
i would love to know, if anyone does have a clue; being a witness most of my life it gave me this feeling like i really was in the true religion and god really was with me cause i belonged to the "true religion.. i have noticed that witness's say the elders were appointed by holy spirit, how do they know did they see it, it just dawned on me that all of it has been based on the premise that i had to have faith in what they say rather then substantiated facts; all of what they say simply put is nothing more then words, contrived by men only, if you tell them this you get the treatment like your going to be destroyed which is paramount to going and burning in hell.

There are in fact religions which do not involve the concept of God, that is why some Christians will also consider themselves Buddhist and read people like Thich Nhat Hahn, for example. Perhaps the reason that we think it is a requirement for religion is because that is all we know, and we insist upon our own definition of the word, consciously or unconsciously.

Given what you already said above, how do you know if anyone who thinks so does in fact have a clue? Tao and others have already made the more important points. If anyone does "have a clue" it would mean you also knew enough to recognize there's something in what they're saying. Just don't allow your healthy skepticism to turn into an arrogance based on ignorance, you'll never learn anything then. I will say one thing, some of the more reasonable religions, even though they are called religions are not considered religions by some. They are only religions simply if you define religion as things which people hold as sacred.

by D wiltshire inarrested for going kingdumb hall!.
last night (3/21) the mountain view (ca) police arrested me.. this happened as i was attending the sunnyvale congregation service meeting.. i was dfd last july and was told by the elders the conditions for reinstatement were meeting attendance, repentance along with not speaking to anyone or anyone speaking to me (shunning at its finest).
(btw, i was dfd for apostasy).

Taken from Insight Meditation - The Practice of Freedom by Joseph Goldstein:
In his book Love's Executioner, the well-known Stanford psychiatrist Irwin Yalom writes: "I do not like to work with patients who are in love. Perhaps it is because of envy. I, too, crave enchantment. Perhaps it is because love and psychotherapy are fundamentally incompatible. The good therapist fights darkness and seeks illumination, while romantic love is sustained by mystery and crumbles upon inspection. I hate to be love's executioner."
Is there a kind of love that does not crumble on inspection, that is compatible with and enhances illumination? Is there a difference between the enchantment of falling in love and that quality of being when we are standing in love? This special quality in Pali is called metta, lovingkindness.
Metta is generosity of the heart that wishes happiness to all beings, both oneself and others. Lovingkindness softens the mind and heart with feelings of benevolence. The mind becomes pliable and the heart gentle as metta seeks the welfare and benefit of all. The feeling of lovingkindness expresses the simple wish "May you be happy."
Because we react less and remain more open when we cultivate metta, the softness and pliability of love become the ground for wisdom. We see with greater clarity what is wholesome and skillful in our life and what is not. As this discriminating wisdom grows, we make wiser choices that lead us again to greater happiness and more love.
-------
The feeling of metta makes no distinction among beings. When love is mixed with desire, there is some energy of wanting, and therefore the love always remains limited. We may desire one, or two, or perhaps three people, but I think there has never been desire for all beings in the world. Unlike desire, metta has the capacity to embrace all; no one lies outside its sphere. People with this feeling of love are always blessing: "Be happy, be healthy, live in safety, be free."

The Church of Mentos.
One day I will finish my essay comparing Zen Buddhism and what I call the Doctrine of Freshness which is the theme behind the commercials for these sacramints. But it would be a simple faith, as vs. 2 of the jingle says: "It doesn't matter what comes, fresh goes better in life."

Brain-dead
by DanTheMan inbeing in the [b]borg[b] for the past 10 years, i feel that i have lost a lot of my brain/critical thinking powers.
does anyone have a book recommendation to help me whip my grey matter back into shape?
-
Introspection
Take a critical thinking class.
Other than that, when I first left I also started using psychoacoustic CDs and "mind machines" like light and sound stimulation devices. There are books on all kinds of subjects if you want to learn about it, but if critical thinking is what you're looking for then be educated in that.

How should I help my jw sister to get out?
by Nicolas ini don't want to put to much pressure on her because i know that she might .

Nic, my only advice would be to not view it so much as overcoming these arguments and reasoning on certain points, (even though those will be things you do) but rather as a matter of helping your sister. I'm sure if you keep that intent the fact that you care will come through. Just don't lose sight and get caught up in an argument. The rest of it is just details.
