  Why all the disrespect for Tua Pek Kong?

  now i understand completely that most in this forum are 100% against jws and the watchtower.

  what i don't understand is the disrespect that has been shown for such a sacred occasion that is the birthday of tua pek kong.

  whether you agree with jws or not, the fact is that birthday of tua pek kong has a lot of meaning for poh hock seah's.

  Wow, you are getting defensive. First of all, I never said "it's all quackery." and I am not sure just how wide your phrase "it's all" would encompass. Certainly, not everything is quackery.

  Wow, if a direct response to a statement you made means getting defensive, maybe I am. I'm not sure what kind of reasoning that is though. Of course the tricky thing about responding to the "you're getting defensive" assertion is that that response can in turn be interpreted as a defense, quite ingenious.

  No you never explicitly stated it's all quackery, but seeing as how you've cited Quackwatch on several occasions when something that is not mainstream medicine is brought up, I gathered that you were implying this. It isn't a matter of which modality of alternative medicine (and what is considered alternative) is proven or not, it's simply a question of backing up your assertions, whether they are explicit or implicit. Of course, if you indeed made no such assertions either way, that's a different story.

  I myself simply take the position of having no need to form a judgement hastily, I'll continue to consider any data that may come my way and weigh this against that. Maybe Quackwatch does work better for apostates and ex-JW's though. Rather than the lengthy process of gathering data and seeing things for what they are, it's much quicker to go on the "opposite side" which screams "IT'S ALL LIES!!" Oh well, it makes for interesting drama I suppose.

  How cute. Gee, why is it we see so much jokes about people on "the other side" and almost nothing about our own side? It sure does wonders for the ego when you can make fun of others doesn't it? Say.. Come to think of it I don't believe I've ever heard of "apostates" joke about themselves? (obviously, I'm talking about jokes about the apostate identity, not just individuals who may think of themselves as apostates) My guess would be the numbers are about equal with JW's joking about themselves.

  I *have* done my homework, and frankly I am not the one that is claiming it's all quackery. Since you are the one taking such a position, obviously the burden of proof falls upon you.   My my, that's a nice catch-all definition isn't it, not to mention some of it has nothing to do with meridians, and frankly I've never heard of it.

  Now.. If acupuncture is quackery, why is it there is such a thing as medical acupuncture, practiced by MDs? And why is it that there are acupuncturists who are licensed health professionals, and that a quick search for the word acupuncture pulls up nearly 8000 abstracts in a medical database? But we're to assume these boys at "Quackwatch" knows better than all those people. Basic rule of thumb in doing research: It helps to have more than one reference.

  How is this different from traditional theory that's behind acupuncture/acupressure? Do you hit points along all the meridians for balancing or is there something more specific? As I'm sure you can imagine, it would make sense to look into the original system.

  Well that's good, that you recognize that anything is just a possibility and judge only yourself. Bottom line is, we don't know do we? We don't know what's going to happen in our future, let alone what's going on with someone else, present or future.

  Of course, being able to relate is really something else. Nobody said it would be easy, but I figure if we want to compare, there's gotta be people who have a harder time than JWs, (yes, even those who were raised one) and some of them must have been able to overcome it. Don't mean to belittle your identity as an ex-JW, but I simply believe you're all more than that.

  Now this part may rub people the wrong way, but even if you think I should go get TP for my bunghole hear me out. Most people will renounce being a JW or whatever, but TRULY renouncing the identity and the behavior is not as simple as writing a letter or whatever. I'll just share one idea that I've found useful, and that is to renounce the need to be the star in your own movie. Now don't go thinking I'm judging the people who posted in this thread, I don't even know what's playing in your theater. But one of the points made about this idea is that it IS your movie, and your story, but you are just not seeing yourself as the main star. This may sound funny, but I think it's worth some consideration.

  It's no fun to spell it out but.. Bottom line - both the professors argument and the comeback was simplistic and frankly kind of dumb. It has nothing to do with the point they're trying to make, the argument just stinks.
