when my daughter was little we were "active" -- one time she asked to say the prayer at dinner.

we said ok. she said a nice little prayer and ended it by adding "and thank you for the beer, the wine and the champagne.".

another time coming home from a meeting she looked up at the sliver of the moon and said "that looks like a giant toenail".. .

I remember reading a watchtower during our family study once. It said "secular work" but I accidently read "sexual work." Awkward.

When I was in kindergarten and my fellow classmates saluted the flag, I put my hands over my ears and scrunched my eyes shut. The teacher grabbed my hands and pulled them down.

It's amazing, when I was a kid, I knew the basics of what was "right" and "wrong" in the JW sense and wasn't afraid to be upfront about it. But I didn't have a concept of apropriate behavior as a little kid (go figure, right?) and I didn't understand the details or reasonings as a teenager. And by that time I was baptized. It's really easy to parrot the things your parents teach you--and believe them--but not understand them. And they still let you get baptized and make you live and die by that.

This is such a good point of argument. I was 12 when I got baptized; up until I was 18 (and moved out of the house) I wasn't allowed to make decisions about association or entertainment. Everything had to be passed through a parental yes/no filter. But in event of an accident, I would have been expected to make a stand for no-blood. Why would that be considered my decision when everything else in my life was ultimately my parents' decision?

slimboyfat, even into my teens (raised JW) I thought the 6,000 years was literal. They hadn't made that very clear to me.

to jehovah's witnesses: i commend your zeal for god, your desire for accurate knowledge and truth of the bible, your goals of drawing close to jehovah, and following and obeying christ's teachings, and your time spent studying the bible.

trueblue, my understanding of that scripture is that it was an analogy to the way a shepherd uses a rod to guide sheep. He never hits them with it. That scripture was advocating gentle guidance. Which doesn't prevent people from taking it out of context.

Rocky_Girl, sex is a category unto itself. How many idiots still believe you can't get pregnant if you're a virgin/you do it standing up/ you're still wearing clothes/you're on your period/the stars aren't aligned/etc?
