Imperfection isn't the problem. The problem is accountability.
by AllTimeJeff inthis was such a profound statement on another thread that i think it bears some further thought, esp because the governing body tends to put their head in the sand as to how their current teachings and dogma do harm to their sheep.
we will come back to current teachings in a minute.. first of all, this is how jehovah's witnesses are taught to view their leaders.
from the july 1, 2007 wt "humbly submitting to loving shepherds".

Recently disfellowshipped prominent Assembly overseer in Western Europe now speaking out against the Watchtower org.
by the research lady informer elder, and assembly overseer roberto from france will be joining barbara and joe anderson on tonight's conference call, july 18,2009. roberto was disfellowshipped in june 2009 and after many faithful years of service is now joining thousands of others who are speaking out against the evils of the watchtower organization.
our call tonight will be focused on how the country of france, as well as other european countries are investigating jehovah's witnesses.
the watchtower organization is experiencing difficulties in these countries for the inhumane treatment and exerting too much control over people's lives.

If the Watchtower Society wanted us to know what a person was disfellowshipped for, they would anounce it with the disfellowshipping rather than just saying "So-and-so is no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses." They obviously do not feel it is appropriate for anyone to know the details or reason so I don't understand why any Witness would feel the need to ask.

This is similar to the "What makes a good JW?" thread. Does an artificial person become a witness or does a witness become an artificial person? I would argue the latter. Regular people become witnesses due to good intentions, normal desires and ignorance of cult indoctrination techniques. The cult then deprograms their personality into a drone. When you come out of it you wonder how on earth you did all the things they got you to do. You were a different person.

What type of person makes a good JW?
by Sour Grapes ini know many hundreds of jw's and there are several common.
threads that tie them together.. 1. they were born into the truth and got married, had.
children and now have deep jw family ties.. 2. people who are so gullible that they believe everything.

They have a propensity to need extreme structure in their lives and feel comfortable when someone they perceive as an "authority" stands over them and watches their behavior, rewarding them for good behavior and punishing them for bad.
I believe journey-on is correct about being institutionalized. But I think that is what causes the need for structure, not the other way around. I became very acclimated to structure and strict obedience as a born-in. I find that hard to break in myself now that I'm out. I have difficulty accomplishing or taking-on new tasks if there are not defined guidelines or persons to be accountable to for it. At the same time, I have come to have a sour taste for authority and the more I learn and become myself the more I am inclined to rebel against authority. The desire to be subservient was something the witnesses implanted in me, not a natural feeling that made be a witness.

I apologize in advance if it seems like I'm picking on you. I just think this list is stretching it. While I think some of the points on your list are valid, I think that others do not necessarily have the cause/effect relationship you're assuming. People may develop mental/emotional issues or trouble with decision making after joining the b0rg. If they're born in there's no way to tell.
Being born in is not a common tie for being a good JW because more kids leave than stay. Yes some stay and they do have that in common, but is it really an indicator of anything? All it tells me is that if you're inclined to stay, you're inclined to be a JW, not that a born-in is inclined to stay.
The gullible comment is just ad hominem. Many people are ignorant of proper fact-checking techniques. They believe they are being thorough when studying with the Witnesses, but they are unaware of cult indoctrination techniques.
As for people who like the idea of paradise, well that's obviously the whole point of being a JW. I mean, you could write a list of common threads that tie people together who go to college and the desire to get a degree will be a prominent one.
I'm not really sure what the purpose of this list is. All those aspects can definitely apply randomly to various JWs, but there are few people who are going to share every point on the list. It seems to me, to be an attempt to belittle the people who become JWs which I do not appreciate. There are a lot of intelligent people on this board who chose to be JWs at one point in their lives and there are a lot of intelligent people in the b0rg now who will hopefully realize they've been had and have the opportunity to access more information about it in the future.

There's Egregiously Erroneous Information. Ask a question and the next poster concocts a wild story to answer it. I'd love to see that one on this board. Example:
Why does it only snow when it's cold out?
It snows only when it is cold out because the sky gets a cold then and it sneezes out snow. If its hot, it gets a fever.
The MacGuyver game. You are given three ridiculous items and a villain to fight. Tell us how you do it. Example:
You have a can of spam a coat hangar and a pin. Defeat the dragon.

We could play "Throw something at the next poster." You catch watever the previous poster threw at you and find something related to the action to throw at the next one. Example:
Catches Tomato from the last poster...
Throws Soe up at the next poster...
*drinks soup*
Ah, thanks, I needed that. My throat's a bit sore.
*throws a cough drop at the next poster*
I also love the "I wanted to be a . . . " game. You pick a job and make a play on words. I wanted to be a mechanic but it was too exhaust-ing.
How about the "Corrupted Wish" game. Each poster destroys the previous poster's wish.
I wish it wasn't so cold in this house.
Granted. Your house bursts into flames.

I need some good responses to the excuse "The elders are imperfect"
by BonaFide inplease make them simple, i have noticed that some of my friends can only stand logic for about 30 seconds before they start changing the subject.
i need some good questions, or points to make them think.
i have tried my own, but i need a better response.. here are the comments my friends have made:.

Doctors are also "imperfect". But when they make very human, very imperfect mistakes, they can (a) be sued for malpractice, (b) disciplined by their regulatory body, (c) lose their licence/privileges to practice medicine, etc. In other words, they are held accountable for their errors.
Ooh, good analogy. I like. I claim.
