I've known a couple of dubs who were cops and carried a gun. They weren't allowed to have privileges, but it's not a disfellowship offense. A firefighter doesn't carry a weapon, but if he misses meetings he probably won't be able to stay an MS. Depends what he wants more.

I need someone to explain...
by desib77 inthis forum seems to have changed quite a bit and i'm kind of confused about the different people that respond to posts.
i need someone to explain what a jw apologist is to me.
is that someone who is not or has never been a jw but doesn't think there is anything wrong with what they do / teach?.

isaacaustin, leolaia has asperger's syndrome:
I have Asperger's Syndrome. I can attest that it is a "real thing". I grew up before it became a widely recognized diagnosis and though I had many autistic symptoms, I did not fit the diagnosis of autism. There was no label at the time, as I said, but it fits me to a T, except I also had language delay. I hear that language delay is actually quite common and no longer viewed commonly as a contraindication.
While my problems were far more severe as a child, I have worked out coping strategies and some issues are only occasional annoyances. I guess you could say I mostly now pass for normal and my behavioral variances fall within the wide parameters of interpersonal variation a good deal of the time, though that means I usually expend a lot of energy "keeping up appearances," and sometimes I still come across as eccentric or weird.

As a 3rd generation JW I was never stupid; but I sure made stupid decisions and acted in stupid ways.
Ditto that.

I had to make a decision
by journey-on inwhen i first faded from jws, i didn't know for sure whether it was the truth or not.
being raised in it, it is not so easy to abandon the years of indoctrination.
then, one day i decided: sh*t or get off the pot.

I hope whatever reaction you do or do not get isn't too stressful for you Mike. I empathize with emotions being less intense once you finally get it on paper. I just wrote a letter to my best friend, telling her my reasons for leaving the JWs. I don't mind if she chooses to stick with them and never speak to me again. I just hope she will read it before she makes that choice. And I really wish I could see her reaction when she gets it. Unfortunately, I may never know.

What does it mean to sin against the spirit?
by keyser soze inthis was always one of the most confusing and troubling doctrines when i was a jw.
i heard the phrase many times, but it was never adequately explained what it meant.
i often wondered if i had committed such a sin, and if i could really not be forgiven.. how does one know if they have sinned against the holy spirit?

Thanks Wobble!
Caliber, so you mean the difference is that if one doesn't know that Jesus is the savior by having it revealed to them through holy spirit, it won't be held against them if they disbelieve because they haven't received the spirit?

Thanks for posting that information caliber. What's the difference between rejecting the spirit's message about Jesus and speaking "a word against" him?

Trained Conscience?
by bluecanary inspike tassel mentioned having a properly trained conscience on another thread.
he and anyone else are welcome to share their thoughts here.. .
'bible-trained conscience' is a phrase we all used as witnesses.

That's a really interesting POV, Wobble. Thanks for sharing. Do you think a person, such as Paul, knows it's the holy spirit? The miracles that happened to Paul were pretty obvious but how about a modern day person? Would that make a difference?

I'm all for tax reform. I don't think other people's bad choices should be funded by you. I'm also all for protecting the life of a child even if it conflicts with a parent's beliefs. Informed adults may still choose to reject life-saving surgery. Children cannot make that decision. As far as being parented by people with wacky beliefs---shrug. I'm frustrated by it too, but not much can be done about that. Everyone's belief is wacky to someone else.
