That makes me think of sitting at a stoplight that never turns green. How long do you sit there before you figure the damn thing is broken and just go on red?

When will they realise that the bus isn't coming?
by eyeslice ini was still a kid and living at home at the time, and so that must have been well over 30 years ago, that i heard ron drage (now a senior member of the uk bethel) say "if you are waiting at the bus stop it, is better to be 10 minutes early rather than miss it".
what he was referring to of course was the then then 1975 issue; in other words armageddon has arrived yet but it just round the corner and we are a little early for it.. i don't know what brought this to my mind the other day but i got to thinking, surely if you are waiting for a bus and you get there 10 minutes early and it doesn't then turn up, how long do you wait?
10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour, an hour, two hours?

What the Family Worship Evening Arrangement Really Entails
by cantleave inas most people here know the combined book study allows an evening for "family worship".. the co visits march - august 2009 is really focussing on this.
if a jdub family head doesn't do a full evening of family worship and uses this time to do recreational activities he is as guilty as isrealite who didn't use the sabbath for worship.
the result, will of course be same as the unfaithful isrealite, death!!!!!!!!!

At least with old bookstudy arrangement if you had a good conductor it could be interesting and fun and there was an opportunity for a coffee, biscuit and chat afterwards.
eyeslice, I wish I went to YOUR bookstudy.

What made me take "The Red Pill"?
by God_Delusion inwhat made me open my eyes after 30 years and smell the coffee?
and why did i accept the red pill, but my parents and everyone else is content with the blue pill?.
has anyone done any research as to what wakes us up?.

It seems to me that people most often need to have a rough personal experience before they are willing to entertain thoughts about wrong doctrines. I don't know what sparked you to quit meetings but many people have been abused by elders and fellow JWs. Once they are disillusioned about "Christian love" and see that God's holy spirit is not acting through the witnesses, they are more willing to check into the facts.

reniaa, thank you for your response. I agree that all leaders have and alway will make lousy decisions. Isn't that why Jehovah didn't want Israel to have a human king?
Yes, people get frustrated with the way politics works. We are given a choice of gala apples or fuji apples when what we really want is a pizza. With the governing body, we haven't got even that much of a choice. And when politcal leaders become unpopular, we have the freedom to question them and express our displeasure. As Oscar Wilde said, "Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation."
If you feel that living by standards in the Bible and trusting in God makes you a better person, I absolutely respect that. If the governing body tells you to do something or believe something that you think conflicts with what the Bible says, which do you choose to follow? Which one would God rather have you do?
The God of the Bible has never before chosen only one select group to whom he speaks. He has always dealt with multiple individuals and entities. Is it not possible that he does this today? What is the criteria for determing whom God has spoken to?

HOWARD ZINN - (historian, anti-war activist) anyone familiar???
by AWAKE&WATCHING in"patriotism is defined as obedience to government, obscuring the difference between the government and the people.
thus, soldiers are led to believe that "we are fighting for our country" when in fact they are fighting for the government - an artificial entity different from the people of the country - and indeed are following policies dangerous to its own people.

Thanks Awake, I've added it to my wish list. I recently read most of Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong. Also a good read.

To shamus, mkr32208 and Deputy Dog: Despite the fact that I quoted her, this thread is neither about reniaa nor directed to her. I thought she brought up a thought-provoking topic and I created a thread based upon it, nothing more. She is as welcome to post here as anyone else. The only people here derailing my thread are you. Stop talking about her here.
