i thought about my own congregation, and was amazed at how accurate i think it actually might be.
plus i liked his descriptions of each group.
I can put faces and names to all those descriptions. I'm currently in the first category except I am 43 not 50!!!!
In a few months I will be 43, never attends meetings, celebrates xmas and birthdays with his wife and kids and could give a damn about what other JW's think. But will still stay the rights things to members of family so that wills aren't changed.

I have recently been watching a programme about the final solution and was struck by the following. The commandant of Aushwitz had been anxious that the Jews were unaware of the fate that awaited them, not due to compassion but due to the need for efficientcy. As a result the whole process of getting undressed and entering the showers was done in an atmosphere of calm and normality. This was death accomplished on a grand scale, efficient, calm and effective.
But this makes it more horrible not less, the quest for the perfect way to kill millions is revolting. Even if Jehovah were to kill babies in their sleep would it make it less abhorrant? Whatever the reason mass murderers are generally not people you want to get close to divine or not.
If we are made in God's image and we feel disgust how would God feel about this concept?
I was asked this question by a Bible Study once, it really bothered them and there is nothing helpful that really offers comfort. It would indeed be worrying if people's lives depended on Field Service. How many witnesses are truly effective in the field and how many offer the mags and get out quickly? It does say in the Bible that if his prophets wouldn't speak his words then the stones would cry out. I can't help thinking a few screaming stones would be more effective than some witnesses I have worked on the service with.

I am so sorry for you.
Unfortunately JWs are social cripples since they have to be so careful not to infringe the rules they cannot take time to feel empathy for people such as you. Many people who post here were probably just the same once, before they realised this was wrong.
On the other hand you are free to empathize and be a truly warm forgiving human being. These people were not bad but damaged. You are free to pursue consolation and solace where ever you chose and never make people feel bad they way they made you feel.
You appreciate what you have lost and feel real grief, Witnesses don't even realise their humanity is donated to an organisation.
Make your mum proud in the right way.

i know there is no definitive answer to the question below.
i reckon that in my congregation there are at 30 people who don't really believe the wtb$ in its entirety.
these are the ones who attend and do just enough so as to please family, maintain social circles / business contacts or need the organisation to give them a sense of purpose.. based on your experience and the knowledge of those in your congregation what percentage of jw's do you believe would stay faithful if they had to choose between the org or their life?.
Dozy, interesting point about Sunday service, ours is more or less dead. Saturday service is a social occasion, in our group at least. The meeting for field service is basically a coffee moring followed by visiting my freinds - sorry I mean calls. I can get away with this because I am in in isolated group where only 4 people attend on a good day. I probaly haven't doine first call since July and will probably never do it again .

i don't foresee any dramatic revelations in this but the evidence is clearly moving towards acceptance of extraterrestrial life.

last night i was at my 'friends' house she hasnt been to the meetings for about two years now, but let's have it said: in the twelve years i have known here shes done about two good stints of attending, been dfd and gone back etc.
she lives with her boyfriend.. well i happened to just mention something about my family and she launched into this whole don't attack the witnesses you know its right barage at me.
i hadn't even mentioned religion.
