it seems that religion has always been considered the opium of the people.
or at least many tend to gravitate towards religion to have or solidify some sort of future with a supreme being overlooking them hoping to have a reward either in heaven or in the jehovah's witnesses case - living forever in a " paradise earth ".
it seems that people can't just live day to day and let each day come to them with whatever happens.
Since leaving the org physically and mentally, I feel free to plan for the future. You hear all the examples at the assemblies about "wait on Jehovah and he'll provide" crap, and they make you feel guilty for having a retirement or savings account. People acted as if planning for the future meant that you didn't have faith.
Being a witness is kind of like living in Limbo- just waiting for God to fix everything instead of taking responsibility and helping yourself and others out.

during a potluck for the hotel where i work, two housekeepers got into a fight because of some petty stuff thats been going on (so ready to quit but havent been job hunting like i should).
anywho, the head housekeepers starts bitching at the housekeeping supervisor and then bust out the other lead housekeeper, saying that she smells like a bag of onions!
i did not attend (i work third shift, and only attended event at work the first year that the hotel opened (2008).
I used to work with a guy that had horrible body odor. It turned out that he had a medical condition that made him reek. He would take a shower and use deo before coming to work, put on more deo at break, go home and shower at lunch time (with more deo), and reapply at afternoon break. Once we found out that it was something that he couldn't help and was doing his best to stop, people were pretty understanding.

as an elder i would have a hard time putting my heart into writing up a local needs talk that was targeting one or two congregation members, knowing full well they probably wouldn't be there to hear it.. .
SirNose, the hubby and I got hooked on playing Halo. One night we were up to 5 in the morning and I had work at 7! We never did get into the sequels.
My brother, sister, and I got in trouble for playing D&D. My parents didn't have a problem with it; they had listened to a couple of our scenarios and were just happy that we were getting along together. Then someone from the gestapo heard about it and we couldn't play anymore. Don't want to stumble anyone! So then we went back to playing fantasy RPGs on the Super Nintendo- because they're so different from D&D, right?

Yup- about "marrying only in the Lord" blah blah, a couple of months before my "worldly" honey and I got married. And you're right! I wasn't there, only heard about it later, hee hee. I don't know why they bothered, at that point I hadn't attended meetings for several years.
