What do JW's Do on the 4th?

pardon my ignorance, having never been a jw, but what do jw's do on the fourth since they don't believe in flag and country?

can they go to friend's bar-b-ques?

is it ok if they go to a parade or firework display?

Tomorrow it will be a cookout and swimming at a relative's house. Most years, it's a BBQ and some go to see the fireworks; I know few jws who are so strict that they do nothing on the 4th. Meetings for service are usually weakly supported (as are most holiday service promos...the last time I was stupid enough to go out on a holiday, 2 jws showed up). Because it's a meeting night tomorrow, many jws will cut their day short to attend.....I however, don't plan on it.

One Thanksgiving a group of publishers asked that their bookstudy be moved to Saturday morning of that week. The elder conducting the study approached the elders.......request denied.

i just wanted to share a few things that are on my heart and mind...hope you don't mind reading.

the church i'm affiliated with has several sister churches around the world.

the purpose of those relationships is to encourage and help each other grow in our relationship with god and christ, whether it be by spiritual encouragement or physical help.

I like the 49ers, and football is my favorite sport by far. When I was younger though, I lived and died with the Vikings. It was never the same for them though when they left Metropolitan Stadium and moved indoors. Sorry, but that's just wrong.

The Montana years in SF, man, what a run! Four Super Bowl titles. Joe was arguably the greatest QB ever, though some might say it was Johnny Unitas.

Puffs, I enjoyed the Bears pics. That 1985 season, wow, what a team, especially the Defense. I'll tell ya, I loved Walter Payton. Also though, I honestly have to rank Gale Sayers as perhaps the best all-around running back I have ever seen. You may not be old enough to remember him, and for me I was privilaged to see him mostly in his later years. But seeing highlights of what that guy was able to do, I am still amazed.

I am looking forward very much to this year's NFL season; it should be cool with 32 teams and realignment.

JW: Lower requirements

the lower requirements of the wt has been brought up from time to time.

i thought i would summarize the ones i know of.

1. conventions used to be one week and go from early morning til late at night.

If not for the softening up, they'd have lost a lot more to inacivity.

And here's a news flash for them.....it's still too much. 5 meetings each week. Admonshing family heads to plan at least weekly field service. Expecting jws to prepare for all meetings. Expecting jws to keep up on the reading of all publications and magazines. Expecting jws to have a regular family study. Expecting jws to be willing to conduct bible studies with interested ones. Expecting jws to prepare for such studies. Expecting jws to follow a program of regular bible reading. Expecting jws to make time to meditate. Expecting jws to pray "incessantly" (which might be possible if they had some time). Expecting jws to consider various forms of pioneer service. Expecting jws to prepare and deliver talks in the theocratic school.....and all that is for the 'average' jw. Ministerial servants and Elders of course have, in most cases, alot more to do.

Frankly, I don't know how jws managed back then. They can barely manage now, if they manage at all. I've been with it long enough (nearly 3 decades) to remember the longer assemblies and so forth.

I also feel that the WTS has overlooked a major societal factor that has occured over the past few decades, especially the past 20 years.....increased numbers of women are now working secularly. This factor, perhaps more than any other, makes it so much harder for the average jw family to keep up with all the demands. Especially so of course the jw wife who now has a job on top of everything else. Simplification? Yeah, they've done some. In my opinion, they have much further to go.

Are there any ex-missionaries here??

i have been a missionary in the dominican republic for almost 10 years and i was wondering if there were any ex-missionaries on this forum.. i am back in my country now for 3 years and totally inactive.. what i noticed in those missionary-years was the lack of spiritual interest among the missionaries.. discussions were about rooms, cars and greater responsibilities, the bad territory.

and the local c.o.s and d.os.. was this only in the dr or are there other experiences??.

fulano, this is a great thread!

I appreciate the 'insider's view' that you've given us; hearing from a person that has actually been a missionary is very revealing and also substantiates so much of what so many of us have experienced perhaps on a more local level.

As far as jws discussing spiritual matters, yes, they seldom do, for all the reasons mentioned in this thread. Just yesterday, I was out in service and the elder in the group was trying to discuss items from a WT article and all he got was stone-cold silence. The people in the group would much rather discuss other stuff. This is also very true and social gatherings, and after meetings as well.

In fact, at times the WT tells us that what we talk about reveals what we really are, what we really have our hearts and minds set on. Well, then, after being ground down each week by a relentless 'theocratic' routine, I guess it shows that jws are just human beings after all.
