Good analogy!
Its so disingenuious and fake too.
"Spiritual Paradise", "Worldwide Brotherhood" , etc........
Look at the "Year Text" for 2010 - "Love Never Fails"
For the WT to apply it to themselves makes me want to barf.
i used to work in advertising, and more specifically, with automotive dealers.
a lot of them are notorious (even though it's illegal) for the 'bait-n-switch' sales tactic: they advertise one loaded model car, customer calls in and is interested in that particular advertised model, the dealer claims to have it and so the customer stops in to drive it, and then bam!
dealers suddenly doesn't have the advertised model but offers the customer another low-end model for apprx the same price.. for some reason that reminds me of how people come into the jw religion.

yes!
i cant wait to hear "the camera eye" and "vital signs" live!.
details are on rush.com.
answer - why yes of course they did!.
discipline may come from someone else.
it may come as a look, a frown, a word, a gesture, a verbal reproof.
LOL - that is a great find, Besty!
It brings up that age-old question - Who writes this crap?
I added my personal feelings - this is how this should really read!!
Discipline may come from someone else. It may come as a dirty look, an evil frown, a swear word, a gesture such as the middle finger, a verbal reproof, such as someone telling you to go f--- yourself. Jesus gave Peter a look that reminded him of the prediction of his grave sin, and he went out and wept bitterly. Then he probably gave Jesus the finger behind his back. Then, Jesus would know Peter gave him the finger, and then would rebuke him again later! WT 10-1-87, p. 18
on social networking and facebook was specifically mentioned, as well as how 'dangerous' it is..
LOL @ Bobby Boucher, Wing Commander!!
The WT is like "Back to the Future" - its like the 80's all over for me, just replace the names.
They seem to be a very jealous slave-master, God forbid you do something that takes away from your service to "Jah"
I know so many elders, pioneers, etc.....who are on Facebook. Good luck getting all of them to delete their accounts!
Geez, next thing you know, they will be giving local needs on visiting apostate sites!
i was speaking to a friend who has also disassociated themselves as a jehovah's witness.
the curious thing to me is that this person, although having some doubts, still has the feeling that the witnesses have the truth.
they get extremely uncomfortable when the subject of religion comes up, and have a hard time coinciding what they are doing now, and their thoughts on the jw religion.. it feels like the times i have talked about the witnesses (feeling we share the same sentiments), that wall that most witnesses put up, goes up for them as well.. i dont understand...why would they still feel this way?
Along with the Cult Control techniques, I really believe more and more that another strong reason people think its the "TRUTH" is because of the family and friends relationships.
They convince themselves of it since they are so afraid to lose those things.
I dont see how after stepping back and (hopefully) taking an objective look at things you could still believe JW's have the truth.

what's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?.
my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.
it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.
This may sound stupid to mention such a highly acclaimed film, but I would say Citizen Kane.
Most of my friends dismiss it because its "old" and give it no consideration.....but it is beyond brilliant IMO............
Its a must-see!!!
is it possible in jw land?.
my family notices that i am uncomfortable around jw's at this point..... i keep telling them that i like the people, but i know what comes along with being "friends" with jw's....its conditional, unless you get someone who is willing to be your friend on the "down-low".
also, the conversations always center around congregation activities, organizational bs, etc......... i was at a gathering a while back, and it was hard to find a group discussing something "normal" .

Well, you are encouraged NOT to go to college, NOT to get a 'career' in this system, NOT to get too focused on retirement since the end is 'IMMINENT', etc....
So, I have seen a lot of JW's get involved with what they think are "quick and easy" ways to make significant money - that way they dont spend a lot of time focused on "material" things. Unfortunately, many of them end up losing much of their hard-earned cash and go deeper in the hole financially and end up having to work into their 70's and 80's............
i am really on the fence on this issue right now and would love some opinions.. i find that i dont sit down and read the bible for long periods since becoming inactive, but on the other hand, individual scriptures mean much more to me now.. i will sit down and look up some favorite passages from time to time and feel like its the first time i really "got it" - without the jw goggles on.
i love matthew chapter 23, since i think it describes to a tee the situation in jw congregations.
i think if jesus returned today, he would blast the elders and "leaders" of the borg in a similar fashion (along with most religious leaders) .matthew 24 is actually more interesting to me now, simply because my whole life was waiting for the 1914 generation to end sometime during the reagan era!
Critical investigating and upbuilding reading are like opposite poles of a magnet. The rest of my answer would read similar to AK-Jeff's thoughts. I have dismissed the Bible as the word of God and accept that it is a book of men. I don't go around insisting on others seeing that view, but when a thread/discussion lends itself to comments on such a view, I say that.
OTWO - I knew bringing up a subject like this would bring a variety of opinions. One of my very best friends shares many of the viewpoints that AK-Jeff and you expressed. Who do I have my very best "spiritual" discussions with? Him! He is a quality person, I respect him as a friend and a fellow human, and him and I can talk about anything without shoving our personal views down each others' throats. I am comfortable with the fact that once people leave the WT, they may now have a totally different view of the bible. I know some people get "offended" or freaked out when people offer those viewpoints, but I think it is very irresponsible to be dogmatic towards others in anything regarding someone's core beliefs. If you ask the question, you better be ready for a variety of answers!
This is all part of the journey for me, and I am open to what the future holds.......Thanks for everyones comments!
