When my mom was baptised in 1975 (ironically) I never thought I would make it to high school, plus we were afraid my non-JW dad would be nuked at Armageddon.
When my dad later got baptised, we still thought that I would never finish high school and then we worried about my sweet old non-JW granny from getting nuked at Armageddon.
When I was IN high school, I never gave my education the attention it deserved because we never thought I would finish high school and I was afraid that since granny died of cancer, that she might not get resurrected AFTER Armageddon.

i've got one of those forever single friend.. he tries to be friends with every kind of "spiritual" sister out there.
they use him for gifts, rides, and paying their diner meals when the friends go out.. he's in his late 40's and has himself been used by 5 sisters in a 15 years span.. he says he's found a good one, but she goes to meetings and is studying the "troof".
his elders and nosybody acquantences have told him to lay off of her until she's baptized and then some (2-3 years for prooving herself in the lord) or else loose his priviliges.. i tried to nonchalantly telling him that was hogwash, but the pharasees have a grip on him.

The first time I met the guy, I didnt like him because he was one of those typical ex-military guys who liked to use intimidation and fear with the congregations. He used to scare the crap out of the elders in the area. He was a stickler for time and would put a huge red card right over your outline telling you to get off the platform if you went overtime!! Nice to see that his talks are still the same!
We had a CO like that too - he used his military training to intimidate people - Wow, isnt that a Christ-like trait?
I couldnt help but see the few mentions of Herd being a black man. That ALWAYS bothered me as a kid, since we had a lot of black friends in the congregations in the area, and I always wondered, "Why would Jehovah choose only old white men to be anointed?"
The congregations in our area that were primarily black were extremely warm and friendly, and the folks there were usually really kind and zealous people. I could never figure out why Jehovah would not "annoint" such wonderful, friendly people.

So, what does discreet mean?
OTWO is right - that is so vague and non-commital that each elder may intrepret it and apply it as he pleases.
To me, from years as an elder - discreet in WT speak means "dont advertise it" or "hide it" "dont draw attention", etc.....
So, if I am holding hands with my wife, and we swing back and forth slightly, is that "discreet"?

Its typical WT speak - sure, they didnt say you cant, but they say that you could offend some. Which basically means someone will find offense with it so now it will become a new set of rules. People can find offense over anything and everthing.
Then, they tell you when its OK - "some" marriage mates.
Ok, what about sons and daughters with mom and dad, what about an engaged couple about to be married?
Furthermore, what is wrong with a loving embrace during prayer? In 10 years as an elder, i NEVER heard anyone complain of a couple in a modest embrace. In fact, some studies found that to be appealing to them - the sense of family and prayer.

I pray to God through Jesus Christ - he told us in the bible what we need to do when praying. The only thing he counseled against was making a big show when praying in public. I dont need another set of Pharasaical rules to go along with it now.

This point is HUGE for me:
The Watchtower claims its appointment of elders is guided by holy spirit. Yet, regularly the men appointed are engaged in practices forbidden by the Watchtower Society.
This was the first step for me in resigning as an elder and questioning the whole thing. When I saw the DEPLORABLE behavior by a great number of elders, I was so disgusted. Then, the organization continually browbeats the flock to follow them and to never question them- "they are spirit-appionted men" or "these are the stars in Christ's hand". I started to wonder - is God's holy spirit that far off that it appointed THIS piece of garbage as an elder????" Are Christ's standards so low that he is holding this A-Hole as one of the stars in his hand? When I had a huge problem over the way something was handled by the elders, I wrote the Society. What did they say? Basically, not to question spirit-appointed men and to GO TALK TO THE ELDERS!!
It was a farce, and I knew it. Now, people like you are helping me to dig further into all of the other BS I have been fed by this unloving, uncaring, organization. THANKS!
