  those stupid sister talks!

  am just remembering the awful headache that came with having to put say " how do we know that mary was a virgin?

  " subject matter , into a "first call" setting with a " work on gestures" ... all together into a script that would kinda make sense!!

  all in 5 mins with at least 2 scriptures used, both of which normaly seemed to have nothing to do with the subject matter!.

  I especially love how the congregation frown at you when you end the talk with the householder not accepting your literature. LMAO

  The majority of the sister-talks felt so incredibly fake. I told my wife numerous times (when I was a "faithful" too) to make it more life-like. I have to admit she tried to do her part to be just like she would answer in real life, but the setup restrained her so much the result was almost always a fake "spiritual masturbation". There's no point in training that way, it just never happens like that in real life!

  I remember one time it was like a breeze of fresh air when in a presentation on how to present the new magazines an older "houseowner" sister kept interrupting the "JW" sister with lines that one actually meets in FS, like "but tell me, how much do you get paid for this work?"; in the end she didn't took the magazine. Not sure if it was her initiative or they rehearsed it that way, but it was so unexpected and lifelike that everyone laughed heartily.

  Just think, there's a possibility that your blood will be divided into fractions, and given to a JW Yet they would say you did wrong. I might go and give blood too. I'm type 0, an ideal blood donor.

  Some, it seems find themselves gravitationg towards other religious beliefs

  ...but i find that my core questions about this invisible friend remain.. .

  why, if this "friend" had the ability to look at and mentally perform the experiment of looking at every configuration of "stuff" prior to actually doing it, would he/she/it do it?

  why bother creating at all?.

  I'm still in, but if there's a destiny, this probably will be mine Oh well, it seems I'm in "good" company, considering how many divisions the GB caused it's a mirracle how they didn't disfellowshipped themselves. This really proves they're spirit directed right? Because God would clear the congregation of anyone causing such divisions as the ones caused by 1914, Romans 13, 1975, 144.000, new light, etc.

  Scribblings at the convention

  i'm sure others have done similar topics and there might be many points that are repeated - i apologise!.

  i allowed myself to be dragged by mum to the district convention which was a very bad idea... i have not been to a meeting in four years... so it's like staying clean for four years and then overdosing it for 3 days in a row (5 days if you count the total time spent staying with an elder's family!

  Catholics are criticised for baptising babies but most children are not capable of deciding on serious religious commitments either!

  You know what's funny? The JWs are much guilty in this than many other churches. Before getting sucked into JW I was baptized as a little child as protestant. Then at the age of 14 when I was somewhat more mature there was the "confirmation" rite, where I confirmed that I want to be a protestant. But the funny thing is: neither of these made me part of the church! These were only symbolic rites. At the age 19 when I wanted to join JWs I went to my local church to ask them to get me off their list, as I am no longer protestant. Surprise surprise, the priest said I was never a member of the church! Baptism didn't make me protestant, confirmation didn't either, to belong fully to the protestant church I would have to go after the age 18 and ask to be a full member!

  I only realised the true meaning of this recently: JWs constantly boast that their numbers only increase of members who really want that religion, not just born-ins. Yet as many here realised already, in the majority of cases the JW child will be baptized way before age 18, some even before age 10! Most of these children don't understand almost anything of the true meaning of baptism, they only want to please their parents and impress their JW friends. In contrast you can't get into the protestant church until you're old enough to actually take that decision for yourself. So who are really the child baptisers here?

  NO Evidence of a "faithful slave" from the 1st Century till Russell...dumb Watchtower logic!

  dumb logic.

  the 1996 yearbook {i think} says the "faithful slave" has been doing its job since the first century till now 1,900 years...ummm what?.

  the watchtower praises martin luther, william tyndale {bible translator} and some others and some small extinct groups who rejected the trinity...but on the whole there is no evidence anywhere of a "slave class" even in all of christendom.

  continuing on my last thread, i'd be grateful to hear about your hobbies (that you've had and didn't have while in the borg)?.

  i took a painting class last spring and loved it.

  One of my favorite hobby is Geocaching - check it out, great fun. Although I had this while I was in too. This summer I was at a geocaching event, it was great to meet normal people, who gather together of their own will to do something they genuinely enjoy.

  Do you ever feel bitter...

  ...that if you had never been a jw you could have been in a totally different, hopefully better, place than where you are now?

  both when it comes to proffession and family etc.... sometimes i feel that i never explored any hobbies coz preaching was my hobby.

  i know it's not too late for babies or new hobbies but still sometimes that makes me sad.. love.

  I feel bitter because my wife is still in, and I fear that us as family will never experience the things that you are starting to explore now . On a personal level though I feel being a JW was an experience that made me more aware of things I would never considered otherwise. Yet the association did create some problems too, which I am trying to patch up right now - like lack of real friends, warped thinking, social problems. But this is how life is - giving some and taking something in exchange.

  i've noticed recently as i make more and more freinds that are non jw, that i seem to want to reassure them that i hold no religous views at all.. it almost as if i fear they can tell i was once a devout jw.... trouble is noone talks about religon unless they are interested in it do they?

  and i don't want to loose my freinds.

  You don't have to be afraid of losing your friends. Real friends don't care about the other's religion - much less about past religion. What matters is yourself in the whole, not some associations. Don't worry about it just try to be yourself, and if the topic does come up no need to be ashamed, just say something like greenie suggested.

  Some quick math for yearly earnings

  **this is not meant to be the definitive basis or way of calculating the society's earnings each year, but just an observation.. from my congregations accounts, i averaged the last six months of what is sent to the society just out of curiosity.

  that amount is approximately $620 per month.

  now, my congregation is located in what is known as a relatively poor town in the u.s. i understand that many congregations will give much more than this and many congregations will give much less.

  I didn't work as accountant, but sometimes helped pick up the money. In our congregation in average I would say it was around $20 per meeting, meaning around $200 per month - by this I mean the total, including money given for local needs that is not sent to the HQ. Now, I live in a relatively poor Easter European country, but according to CIA World Factbook we're still better than more than half of the world. Using your number and my appreciated number of donations compared to the CIA's list of GDP - per capita (PPP) it seems the monthly donations of a congregation could be around 1/70th of the PPP value of the country. One could take that number and collate with the number of congregations in each country, multiplied by the PPP/70 of that country, and could come up with a more exact number - but still a very rough estimate. However I think the total amount is lower than what you got.
