Bluegill: I'm sure your father would have never believed it, it's all just "apostate lies". What can you show for proof anyway? There's technically nothing you could show that can't be dismissed as fake evidence.

Questions that completely dumbfound Witnesses
by Megachusen in"so is the nearness of armageddon from jehovah's perspective or from ours?".
"why is the majority of the memorial talk dedicated to bringing in more members?".
"who were the true worshipers of jehovah in the 17 hundred year gap prior to russel?".

A few days ago an elder, old aquaintance of mine visited me (alone, which was my request - props for him for accepting my terms). It was quite an interresting meeting. This elder is quite intelligent, he is a professor at a local college. Here's part of our talk:
"Teel, the world can offer you nothing but uncertainty."
"What is better, to firmly believe in something wrong, or to be uncertain of things?"
Yep, I laid the good old "false dilemma" fallacy in front of him, and he just couldn't see it. The WT uses false dilemma so much they take it as normal conversation. He must have known he can't choose between these two. So he just erm-ed and huffed, and started talking about how we have to use "common sense" to judge our firm beliefs on; how the muslims kill the innocent just because they firmly believe that's the right thing to do.
So I asked: "If a certain medical procedure has better chance of success, would it not be 'common sense' to choose that over the one that has less chance of success?"
He knew at once I was talking about blood, so he tried to explain that here "common sense" would mean to choose the eternal life Jehovah gives instead of a short lengthening of your life. But, I asked, "Isn't that exactly what the muslims are claiming? That what they do is common sense, and you can't understand his actions only because you don't believe in Allah?"
We also talked about the biblical basis of disfellowshipment. He asserted:
"1 Cor 5:11 is a definite law how you should behave with such people" (actually he didn't mentioned the verse, he didn't even take out the Bible the whole time)
"In turn Paul talks about how the 'scolding of the majority' is enough for such people, which means the congregation didn't view Paul's words as law."
"Well, I haven't thought about this verse yet. But in 1 Cor 5:11 it's a definite command, while this other verse is just describing some events that happened."
"Yes, but if that happened, can't we conclude the overall spirit of how Paul's words were received in the congregation? Meaning it wasn't a law, rather an advice, like in 'Bad company corrupts good character'?"
"Teel, you're taking one verse, interpret it in your way, and try to force that interpretation on an other verse."
"But isn't this the same you were doing just now? You just said 1 Cor 5:11 is a law, so there must be some explanation why some have not followed that law, but it can't be because they didn't view it as a law."
All in all it was a fun conversation.

one flock, one shepard
by make yourself indid anyone else notice that in the watchtower its bringing out jesus is the mediator only for the 144,00. and where did they get it that jesus didn't partake of the emblems?!?!
it's crazy how true that scripture is that states that satan blinds the minds of the unbelievers.
but what i don't understand is do you think the governing body is doing this type of stuff like putting stuff in the watchtower like this on purpose since they have the issues only for members of the congregration?
-
teel
They just put that [not, all men] in the article, not in the Bible, to explain why this verse can't be used to say Jesus is not only a small group's mediator. As tec said it, it's just BS, the verse didn't say "some men" either, so why should we conclude that it's not "all men"? They twist the scriptures whatever way they have to to strengthen their positions as leaders.

A snippet from a JW email - what a way to view the world we live in!
by jambon1 inmy wife received an email from her friend, a jw.
i suppose it is just a small thing but it highlights one of the things that really pisses me off about the jw religion.. after talking about some situation she comments:.
"i know it's always hard work in this system, totally rubbish.

Oh - and it IS hard work living in this world when you're killing yourself cleaning and window washing. ;)
No, even then living isn't necessarily hard work. Does your 8 hour 5 days work pay for the food, clothing and housing needs? Then you're not struggling, welcome to real life and be grateful for what you have. JW's view of paradise won't change that either, you still have to work day by day. What, you though it will be just relaxing and chatting with your friends? Then you're in the wrong religion - join Islam, their Paradise view is more fitted to that image.
Of course if you add the constant pressure to "do more" for the WTS on top of the regular 8 hour work, then I believe you, it's a struggle. It makes an 8 hour day work into at least 11 hours per day. But blame it on who put the yoke on you.
Edit: this wasn't directed at you Georgiegirl I just happened to quote you, nothing more.

So true. This is the end times, so everything must be the worst there ever was. My wife is actually convinced if she was living 200 years ago she would be much happier. If I try to explain the living conditions they had then she thinks I'm making it up to ruin her faith. Many of these JWs have a wonderful life, better than the royalty had 200 years ago, yet they have to think it's very bad, because it has to be in the end days. It's just sad.

I haven't read the whole 5 pages of this thread, but I don't think intellectual property was the issue at all. The WTS owns the material, no question about it, they have the right to pull it down (sidenote: as has been said before, they own it, therefore it's not from God, it's men's teachings - who would dare to make a claim on God's inspired words?) What we find ridiculous is how the WTS is afraid of open criticism and will use any means to crush instead of resolve it.

What Are Your Favorite WT Quotes/Teachings? Most Ridiculous or Hilarious Ones.
by mentallyfree31 inwhen you look back over the 130 year history of wt, what is the most bizzare/ridiculous/hilarious/absurd teaching or quotes that you have found?.
one of the ones i find hilarious is during the beth-sarim affair, rutherford announced that the world was laughing and mocking them because they don't believe the resurrection is going to come to pass when they said it was.
rutherford went on to say in effect "we will show them when people start coming back from the graves"... lol.

Funny that noone mentioned the current generation teaching in this thread. I find this the most hilarious current teaching. There were funnier in the past, but right now this takes the crown. It just boggles the mind the audacity of the GB to give a common word a new meaning, and say that this was evidently what Jesus meant by it.

Laverite's story should have started something like this (imagine this in italic, font size 14, first letter bold and huge, but I don't want to mess with formatting here):
"I was standing there with an invitation to teach in the college in my hand, and thinking what would be the best course of life for me: spreading knowledge of truth, or wasting my life as a pioneer for a cult. But let me tell you how I got there."

JW Pioneer That Has Baptized Over 100 People!

she is a genuinely nice person, and a very low key person.
she is pretty much fairly quiet and keeps to herself.

I sure wouldn't like to be in her place if that happened. I'm really happy I haven't brought anyone in; being guilty of making a whole congregation of idol worshipping drones would be almost too much to bear.
For a while I was actually hoping maybe my parents will join, now I thank God they didn't. Now they know from me the insides of this cult too, and I am absolutely positive they find even the thought of joining repulsive.
