Jookbeard, interesting thoughts. Thanks for sharing with us.
I'm with Gayle, it also sounded a little like a final good-bye to the old life.
Symbolically saying they can no longer be using you, but you them.
i sat in the car with some trepidation and minor nerves and walked the 200 yards to the k/h on this damp dreary night.
i was a bit early and was greeted pleasantly by a hall attendant who shook my hand an asked my name, as i walked inside to my surprise i recognized 3 of the brethren, one was a guy who was a reasonably good pal who dated a friend of mine all those years back, he exchanged glances and he blanked me, the others were a middle aged couple who were sat a few rows in front of me but no eye contact was made, i proceeded to sit down and another 2 sisters greeted me, so in the space of about 10 mins a grand total of 4 people have made the big effort to say hi.
the opening song commenced and the sister next to me kindly offered me her songbook.

for me, it was always the theocratic ministry school/field service meeting.. strangely, i never minded giving talks, because i always wanted to perform and have virtually no stage fright.
but, listening to some of the deadly dull talks used to make me look at the clock a lot.
i always felt sorry for some poor slob who had to give his first bible reading on something like job's daughters raping him after getting him drunk.. i swear i think our school overseer did it on purpose because he was a mean sob.. and, i hated field slavery as my parents became witnesses when i was about 12, never did get a good attitude about it.
The Public talk was way too long and boring. I put myself to sleep giving them.
i'm pleased to have found this site...i've browsed a little ...read quite a lot and gasped at some stories, giggled at the one liners and nodded in recognition of others' strong opinions and can relate to a great deal.. i'll try and keep my intro as brief as possible for anyone kind enough to listen.. i got involved with the witnesses in the late 70's in the uk.
i was in my early 20s and had had a love and fascination for the bible since my difficult childhood.
i soon brought my life into 'line' although it took a long time for me to pack up the smoking which didnt go down well in those days when 6 months of study should have been enough and if you hadnt cracked it then it was suggested that you were some kind of loser.... i reared my 4 children in the 'truth' as well as i could but i cant claim that we were a 'strong' family in their terms...just muddled along really..my husband at the time was a very difficult and abusive man and home life wasnt easy for any of us with his anger, jealousy and violence.
Welcome to the board and thank you so much for sharing your story.
Unfortunately, your experience is not unique. But good for you on starting a new path that hopefully will be filled with much happiness.
Looking forward to getting to know you better.
inspired by the recent "do more!

Spank your kids and make them sore!
No disrupting, keep them quiet
Hit 'em, Hit 'em, with a steady diet
Legally, they feel they can throw someone out in the USA if they feel you are there to disrupt the meeting. (just in case you have those feelings) lol.
I would be quiet and try to fit in if going. Then partake at the opportune time.

Snowbird - blue corn meal?
I'm from Arizona and they sell Blue cornmeal in our markets. Its a staple for the Indian populations, for breads, chips, and pancakes.
My wife developed a southern style recipe for Blue cornmeal pancakes that is awesome for a Saturday evening supper.
Topped with butter and maple syrup..yummy!
i did...... by the time you were done, they looked at you like you were from another planet.. it was the "you actually believe all of this?
" look.. .
Snowbird - thought up by a white guy?
My brother explaining to me about the JW religion when I was studying said they were a Black Muslim Religion. I believed him because all the JW's I knew were black and they wore white shirts and ties like the muslim movement did in the 70's.
I had just read Cleavers 'Soul on Ice' and thought it would be cool to check them out. lol
this afternoon my wife received aphone call from an old elder friend, she was quite surprised.. we da'd ourselves a little over a year ago.. he basically invited us to the memorial on tuesday night, and he went into some story about how many people in the hall.
are inactive/da'd/ df'd.
and he launched into some info.
If there was a new program coming, don't you think we would know it here long before any CO would?

leper......
You brought back a memory of trying to eplain to a RV who I invited to the funeral service trying to explain it all. He wasn't getting it, so I told him. "Whatever you do, don't partake! Just pass it along."
During the service, he feigned to drink the wine, driving me nuts, then he chuckled. He thought it was silly. I almost grabbed his hand to stop him.
At the time I thought, "How can someone make fun at such solemn occassion?" Now, I sort of see his view.
