Been looking at translation quite a bit lately and read multiple books on the subject as well as speaking with a few people that actually can read Greek and Hebrew. While I would say that the NWT is not a horrible translation they took absolutely unjustified liberties in inserting the Name in the Greek Scriptures. You can maybe justify doing it in quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures but nowhere else. They also clearly let doctrine bias their wording in quite a few cases though that is almost a constant with translation because often there are several possibilities and you simply have to select one. I would also say that real 'translation' is very difficult indeed and requires expertise that I do not believe they possessed or posses to this day. So it's really a kind of cobbled together version rather than an actual translation and I believe they were completely dishonest in their descriptions of how it was produced. All that stuff about how great 'leteral' translation is must be considered complete BS because all translation is interpretation. I recommend the NASB, ESV and my favorite is the HCSB. Occasionally I use the Jerusalem Bible or PHillips.

Frederick Franz, "Bible Scholar"
by Quendi inas some of you know by now, i spent sunday, 7 august, renewing ties with a dear friend.
we're both disfellowshipped, the difference between us being he is seeking reinstatement and i am not.
we got into some very spirited discussions on different bible topics and one of them was the value of the new world translation itself.

Leaving it all behind.
by Jazzbo ini haven't been on an exjw site for months and months.
i frankly am way past the point where i define myself as an exjw, i am who i am and it doesn't have really anything to do with the way i was raised or spent a considerable portion of my life, i also refuse to be bound by witness requirements as to leaving, contact with witnesses, or some kind of responsibility to whack people who seem perfectly happy as witnesses over the head with 'the truth about the truth'.
i have recently run in to a few people that seems to simply obsess with their lives as witnesses and why they left and in some cases the way they were treated or mistreated, or the need to "do" something.

I have recently run in to a few people that seems to simply obsess with their lives as Witnesses and why they left and in some cases the way they were treated or mistreated, or the need to "do" something. To me, that would mean in some sense that they are still controlling me. I am not criticizing the way anyone chooses to get through life but I wonder if this kind of focus is good over time, though perfectly understandable in the initial stages of departure. Would it be better to simply leave it all behind and get on with your life? I probably won't see responses to this post because it's unlikely I'll show up here again for another year but I thought this might be food for thought for some.

Well it look like AG Eric Holder is finally stepping down.
by tootired2care inhttp://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/09/25/351363171/eric-holder-to-step-down-as-attorney-general.
happy day - our incompetent race baiting ag who refuses to actually do his job, and prosecute high crimes right under his down in the irs is finally stepping down.
good riddance!.

Eric Holder should have long since been in Federal prison. Never going to happen but it should. Never been a more divisive, incompetent, partisan individual occupying the most important law enforcement position in the country. He is racist and leftist to the core, trampled on the Constitution with delight and served admirably only in drawing fire from Obama. Whatever we get won't be a whole lot better because it will be an Obama appointee.

Ferguson Shooting (Is my thinking on this all wrong.......)
by out4good3 ini think everyone here can agree that walking down the street, even in the middle of the street, is not cause for having a clip emptied in your ass......... i can understand how the black community would be outraged by the injustice of seeing another black man dead in the street at the hands of the police under mysterious circumstances....... i hope that i'm not succumbing to the attempts to assinate the already well impuned character of the dead man...... however.
i can't help but think that this could all have been avoided by exercising the proper discretion with fore-knowledge of the disadvantages people of color have when they are dealing with law enforcement in the united states.
it is not as if this disadvantage has only since recently came to light.

He was shot until he stopped, six times, two times, twelve times, it doesn't really make any difference. You shoot until they stop.

share your reaction after reading CoC and ISoCF
by suavojr inafter reading coc and isocf i cried, i was in shock, disillusioned, angry, and afraid... anyone wants to share their experience?.
i would like to see what you think about these questions when compared with your account.. why people from different backgrounds feel similar reactions?
(cannot be a conpiracy).

I felt vindicated. The books were just confirmation for what I'd felt and figured out a long time before. However, reading the books had no impact on my faith or view of the Bible because in my mind those things were always completely separate from the Organization.

Sledgehammer subtlety: The insidious reworking of Micah 6:8
by rory-ks inmicah 6:8 might be - or have been - a favourite verse of many.
the verse used to read:.
"he has told you, o earthling man, what is good.
-
Jazzbo
Nice thread. Micah 6:8 has always been my favorite text and it was the first thing I looked at in the new translation. Not happy about at all. No problem with "requiring" but "cherish loyalty" is so obviously agenda driven. I did examine the original wording and considerations of the translation but I think it's fairly difficult to justify making the change even though there are some grounds. The organization never does this kind of thing simply to be more accurate. It's always about pursuing organizational goals.

Who pioneered with the promise of having 'Jehovah provide' and ended up dirt poor anyway?
by Julia Orwell ini ask this because the wt always bangs on about if you trust in jehovah and make that leap into pioneering, you will always be provided for.
at the time i joined the cult, a friend was continuous aux.
pioneering.

I will never forget one Pioneer couple that was on the stage at the Circuit Assembly being held up as an example because they had one child, both pioneered and he only worked two days a week. Course I knew the guy, knew that Dadddy bought his house and that he made more money in two days than most people sitting there made in two weeks because he was also working for Daddy who was very well off. Heard a couple sitting in front of me who were obviously poor as church mice say, "If they can do it, we should be able to do it." It was nauseating. Didn't hold it against the guy because he was OK, but the CO knew the whole story and chose to only tell part of it.

Were you 'alive in '75' and how was that year for you?
by punkofnice ini was a junior borgite in 1975. i remeber looking at the calendar at work in october and thinking: 'armageddon isn't here yet.....and it doesn't feel like it will be here anytime soon either!'.
i was surprised that jehovah hadn't obeyed the superior command to bring the big 'a' as instructed to him by fred franz.
how dare god disobey the jw leader!!!!!.

I knew people that quit their jobs and pioneered, people that moved across the country to serve where the need was great, some that put off medical treatment, a few that maxed out every credit card they could lay their hands on. Never bought into it myself and was roundly criticised for not being on the band wagon by quite a few. Interesting that those people that were so critical had a complete memory lapse about the whole thing after a couple of years had passed. No question that the date was consistently preached from the platform, especially at conventions and assemblies, even though they were a little more careful in print.

A DOUBLE LIFE - What's the worst case you've seen
by sizemik inlots of jw's lead a double life.
many are young people that simply go through the motions until they can free themselves .
others have relatives or family still trapped .

Knew a very prominent Elder who traveled for his work. Turns out he was having affairs with women in many of the places he visited while he was traveling. One of these girls became a Witness and saw him on the platform at a Circuit Assembly which caused her to burst into tears. Her explanation certainly livened up the assembly.
