Would the Watchtower Society be Republican or Democrat, if it were political?
by Quillsky ini believe it's very republican in its outlook..

It would be a strange mix. They are on the right when it comes to abortion, atheists, gay rights, and drugs. They are on the left side when it comes to not saluting the flag, opposing military action, freedom of speech (their speech), freedom of religion (their religion) and collecting welfare checks. They are on neither side when it comes to voting: perhaps that is a blessing!
The last thing they would be is Libertarians!

The question is whether clergy, who have received confidential medical information in their clerical capacity, have the same legal duty as medical professionals to protect its confidentiality. This ensures a patient can seek treatment for STDs, etc. without fear of their condition being revealed, so they will not forego treatment out of fear of scandal. If clergy are not included in the HIPPA act restrictions, they should be!
Sighco didn't mention any patient information being written on the card, only the phone numbers of the elders. That's probably not a HIPPA matter. But the answers to the questions do involve patient privacy, as Blondie said previously.
I'm surprised at one question that isn't there: "Do any relatives or next-of-kin oppose the no-blood policy?" I'll bet my name is written on the margins of some of those cards, noting my "opposer" and UBM status.

How Do You Feel Being Thought Of As An "Apostate"?
by minimus indoes it bother you if witnesses regard you as an apostate?.
-
GLTirebiter
It makes me laugh!
I can't be a JW apostate, because I never joined up. Apostates are those who walk away.
JWs tend to confuse apostates with heretics. Heretics reject the doctrines, but don't necessarily leave. I never accepted them in the first place--dammit, I can't be a JW heretic, either!
Here's to all my "bad associations" here on JWN, whether apostate, heretic, both, or none of the above--at least I do get to be a bad association!

Need "legal" advice about evictions
by WuzLovesDubs inas you guys know, i moved out of my home a year ago to get away from my verbally and mentally abusive jw husband.
turns out he was trying to force me out and was not unhappy when i left.
upon hearing that i was leaving, my oldest moved out on his own and the two youngest said they wouldnt stay there with him because he was verbally abusive to them as well, and they moved out with me.

Without your husband's cooperation, you will have a hard time getting them out and (even more important) keeping them out. You do need legal advice, as in "lawyer". I'm sorry you're in such a messy situation, I hope it turns out well in the end.

to buy a house or not... suggestions, experience, help!
by Aussie Oz inmany years ago i bought a house because the government basically threw money at us and the mortgage was pretty much the same as the weekly rent in $ per week.. obviusly that has changed, here in aust real estate has gone through the roof with a house considered a bargain at $300,000 for a first home buyer.. so here i am at 47, thinking about buying a house so that when i retire, the wife and i will not have to pay rent or mortgage at all.
we have to raise $25k more (we have 10) for deposit and fees in the next 18 months to do this.
(offer is to buy mil house at reduced market price).

It depends on whether real estate continues to appreciate in value, taking the rents up along with it. When I bought my first house the monthly payment was $850, a bit tough but I was able to make it.
Fast forward to last summer, looking for a place to live during the divorce. Rent for a small duplex was $850 per month--for a place smaller than that first house, with barely enough room for me plus one small bedroom for the kids on visit weekends. My point is that rent always seems go up, but the mortgage payment is pretty stable (the loan part is fixed, but the taxes and insurance do increase).
I don't know what the tax treatment is in Oz; here in the US the interest on the mortage and property taxes on the house both are deductible from your income for tax purposes. Rent is not deductible at all. So that's effectively a discount on the interest and taxes because of income tax savings. If Australian taxes have a similar provision, that's part of your rent vs. buy decision.
The down side to owning is if you're likely to move in the near future. You'll have almost none of the loan paid off, and will have to deal with selling the house (for enough to pay off the loan balance).

Are the JWs a dangerous cult?
by cyberjesus inis it a matter of just biblical interpretation?
are they just a little lost?
or are they really a dangerous cult?
-
GLTirebiter
I think they are. Others have a narrower definition of "cult" and say "No, they're something else but not a cult". That's merely a matter of the definition--not what we're seeing.
I won't use the "C word" when talking to a witness. Doing that triggers the trained reaction: the mind and ears switch off, the mouth lauches the pre-programmed responses, and I might as well be talking to a stone wall. Speaking that bluntly does no good, and often does harm.
