Suggestions for car buying
by FlyingHighNow inif you were a lady and you were 55 and had $5,000 or less to spend on a used car, what would buy?
top concerns: good mpg; reliable; in not having major issues like ball joints breaking, timing belts breaking, etc.
not too expensive to maintain.

Let your experience with that timing belt be a warning: they do not last for the life of the car, and must be replaced regularly (expensive, but less than a blown engine). If you buy a car with a timing belt, check the maintenance schedule and plan on replacing it no later than recommended. If it's overdue, find out how much that will cost--or walk away from the deal.
At the $5000 price level, the car will be old enough that condition and prior treatment are vital. Even the best brands will have problems if the car has been abused or poorly maintained. Get an opinion from an honest independent mechanic, one who works on many makes and knows what problems are common on different models, one who isn't afraid to tell you "If you buy that thing I'll be seeing you often." Also ask about how easy it is to find parts for the model you're considering; discontinued or unusual parts could keep it in the shop until a special order arrives.
Insist on a fresh emissions test, and check the numbers on the report to be sure it didn't barely squeak by. If it barely passes this year, there's a good chance it will fail next time. In most states, failing the emissions test means you can't renew the license plates until it's fixed.
I generally look for less than 10 years old and less than 100,000 miles. But I have had a car with multiple problems in less than half that, while another lasted far longer (same make but different models).

Packers in a playoff game at Lambeau Field, subzero weather, and then there's the wind chill. So sorry 49ers, you are going to the wrong place at the wrong time!

Boring Blockbusters
by compound complex ingreetings, movie buffs:.
i grew up with scary movies of the 1950s -- "the beast from 20,000 fathoms," "forbidden planet," "the thing" (howard hawkes).
in "the thing," the audience gasped when the men surrounding the ice-encased object proved to be circular: a flying saucer!

"Less is more."
A concept Alfred Hitchcock understood so well. The suspense is in what you see in your imagination, not with your eyes.

Breyers is not allowed to call it's product "ice cream" anymore by the FDA!
by EndofMysteries inmany other so called ice cream at grocery stores as well.
have you noticed how it seems to be different than from a couple years ago?
that it doesn't melt, it just warms up and becomes like a whipped cream texture?
-

It's no different from bread, spaghetti sauce, mashed potatoes, fried chicken or apple pie. Do you want tasty, genuine ice cream? Then make your own!

wife and family get a sheperding call.
by Crazyguy inso while i'm symbolicly burning at the stake for hericy, my wife is getting consoled by the very priests that lit the match.
doesn't get much more ironic then that does it?
i don't know how much longer i can take this.

Are the elders consoling her when you are not present? Their role is to be only (spiritual) counselors, not (emotional) confidantes. Quoting the society's policy manual (emphasis is mine):
"Usually it is best to have both mates present. If only one is present, discuss only what he or she can do to improve the situation."
"It is important never to meet alone with a sister who ... is in a delicate emotional state."

Christmas Field Service
by NeverKnew inon another thread, i read that a few adherents may be traveling (cough-cough) to other cities and wouldn't be able to make field service on christmas day.. what is the likelihood that going out on christmas will be encouraged at the weekend services at the khs?
...or do most halls stay neutral on this?
given what i've read on this forum, i have the impression that disrespecting a day of other's celebration wouldn't be discouraged which annoys the heck out of me..

Do you frown upon tattoos?

Enjoy how a new tattoo looks, because that's as good as it ever will be. Aging, streching skin will take away the image's sharpness; sun and time will change the colors; fashions will make the artwork passe.
And never, ever tattoo a girlfriend's or boyfriend's name on yourself--tattoo artists know those are good for repeat business, to undo the branding when that "soul-mate forever" becomes your Ex!
