Breyers is not allowed to call it's product "ice cream" anymore by the FDA!

Many other so called ice cream at grocery stores as well. Have you noticed how it seems to be different than from a couple years ago? That it doesn't melt, it just warms up and becomes like a whipped cream texture?

It used to be just milk cream sugar than whatever flavor was added. Here is what is added to what used to be my favorite but is disgusting now.... WHEY, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CAROB BEAN GUM, GUAR GUM, CARRAGEENAN, NATURAL FLAVOR, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, TARA GUM.

On breyer's own website they explain why they don't have 'ice cream' on the label anymore.

""""Frozen Dairy Dessert products are made with many of the same high-quality ingredients that are commonly found in Ice Cream – like fresh milk, cream and sugar – and offer a great taste and even smoother texture. According to the FDA, in order for a product to be labeled ice cream, it needs to meet two key requirements

Not less than 10% dairy fat

    • A percentage of overrun that results in a finished product weighing more than 4.5 pounds per gallon

Anything that does not meet both of those requirements is not considered ice cream.

    5) Why did Breyers make the change to Frozen Dairy Dessert?

Our consumers are at the center of every recipe decision we make. We work hard to understand what people want most and work to give them the best possible product experience. People have told us they have various flavor or texture preferences. """"

What a bunch of lies. I like how they try to make it seem that real ice cream is very fattening, etc, and that the chemical mixture they made up which is undoubtably much cheaper is supposed to be what people prefer.

That's why they weigh to light, don't melt properly, taste like SH$$.

If I can't find any ice cream in stores that are just milk, cream, sugar, then time to buy a $50 ice cream maker and make it myself.

Blue Bell - 'Cause everything else is crap!

I looked in the store last night and couldn't find any ice cream without the whey and gum crap added! If blue bell is just milk, cream and sugar then I'll get it!

I found this on wiki, and it seems many ice cream companies followed. Didn't pink slime start around the same time?

"Prior to 2006, [2] Breyers was known for producing ice cream with a small number of all-natural ingredients. In recent years, as part of cost-cutting measures since their move from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Unilever's U.S. headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, [3] Unilever has reformulated many of its flavors with nontraditional, additive ingredients, significantly changing the taste and texture of their desserts as a direct result of these additions. [2] Following similar practices by several of their competitors, and to the consternation of many former customers, [2] Breyers' list of ingredients has expanded to include natural food additives such as Tara gum [4] and Carob Bean gum, [5] artificial additives such as maltodextrin and propylene glycol, [6] and common artificially separated and extracted ingredients such as corn syrup, whey, and many others. [5] [6]

One significant result of these cost-cutting practices has been that the majority of their U.S. products no longer contain enough milk and cream to actually be considered "ice cream", and are now labeled "Frozen Dairy Dessert" instead."

According to their web site, Breyers still has actual ice cream.

What is your objection to guar and Tara gum? Both are thickeners that are made from natural ingredients.

Edited to add, it appears the website info is current as of 3/13, it says see shelf packaging for current ingredients. Are they trying to hide the fact that they don't make actual ice cream any more?

What's my objection to guar and tara gum? You also forgot the whey as well.

    1. It doesn't taste like ice cream anymore.

    2. Used to be the melted ice cream was delicious to drink up. Now what happens when it melts is it doesn't actually melt. It turns into this warm airy goo or becomes something of a texture of thick shaving cream. Tastes disgusting.

Yes they are. As you see from my post copying what they did in as explained in wiki.

I like Trader Joe's Ice cream, but it does have guar, but it does melt into creamy liquidity yumminess. I bought some Breyers recently, it did taste terrible, I just thought it was because I had gotten addicted to Trader Joe's, now I know why. I didn't even like ice cream that much before Trader Joe's. I like Blue Bell, but they don't sell it here.

I am still looking into this, it bugs me when manufacturers try to hide the fact that they don't care what they put in their food.

One of the worst imo, is Nutella. They market this as breakfast food for children as its made from "hazelnuts and skim milk". What they don't say is it is mostly sugar and hydrogenated fat. Hydrogenated fat is a horrible food, it shouldn't be allowed as a food. To make oil shelf stable they break the molecules by running a metal through it so that it is solid at room temperature. This process causes the oil to be rancid, so they then deodorize it. Sounds yummy doesn't it?

I read an article by Dr Andrew Weil, and he did say ice cream has anti freeze in it.

I'm not a bit fan of ice cream but when I just have to have my Baskin&Robbins Pralines and Cream, I'm not thinking about anti freeze, but I am glad I have a Vitamix and can make my own just three ingredient ice cream.
