I entered "Combatting Cult mind Control" in the Search box & saw this. I've been out of the jw's for a very long time, but still found the book extremely helpful. While we may be out *physically*, many still refer to it as the 'truth' even though they no longer go to meetings. That is part of the destructive nature, holding on to subtle words such as "truth" even though you no longer believe.

How Jehovah's Witnesses Control Your Mind - Controlling Your View of Truth
by flipper infor those of you, newbies or perhaps others who haven't read steve hassan's book - " combatting cult mind control" here are some very important things to remember of how jehovah's witnesses and other " mind control" cults operate .
it may help you to understand some things to see how we were all faked out at one time in our lives.
hassan's book states , " in totalistic cults , the ideology is internalized as " the truth ", the only "map" of reality .

MY FIRST DOUBT
by goldensky indear all,.
i posted my first thread a few days ago and some of you asked me questions i'm more than willing to answer.
but there is so much i want to say to you there's no way i can convey all the information at one sitting, so i've decided to tackle one subject at a time, both for the sake of not boring you and because i'd love to know how you feel about each individual topic.

If you are recently out, might I suggest reading Ray Franz's "Crisis of Conscience" and 2 books from Steven Hassan called "Combatting Cult Mind Control" and "Releasing the Bonds"? You might really find them interesting.

when you denied it & they said they believed the elder, you should've asked if the "2 witnesses" rules applied there as well. ;-0

Around age 14, I was out in service with my father & an elder who was so pompous. One day, I asked him (the elder) why he picked his nose in public constantly. My father turned around and I could see the steam firing out of his ears. ;-) The elder said "its a condition where it always feels like there's something there." I replied, "well its kind of gross." Once again, I received the father glare.

So I did it - almost!
by wantstoleave intoday, i'm not quite sure how it started, but i voiced my concerns about the religion i've been brought up in since i was 3. my dad went straight on the offensive, though kept nice and polite.
i told them that someone can not be df for accepting a transfusion.
not sure why i started with that example, but nevertheless... dad said 'since when' and started pumping me for information, when, where, what...you get the picture and biggest one of all 'how do you know this'.

I remember as a child that one story in there where the king was holding that baby upside down with a sword in his hands. The mother was begging for him not to slice her child in 1/2. I still get the chills as to how horrified I was from that picture. Children have such vivid imaginations.

I've recently found that a Catholic Monk is actually the first person to *find* that YHWH translates in Jehovah. Why do the jw's use the Catholics as THE example for all churches (I don't remember them using Methodists or Christadelphians as examples, for instance), yet they adopted a name for god that was initially discovered BY A CATHOLIC. ? I'm a little perplexed. Wasn't there an article somewhere in the JW literature that says they acknowledge that "Jehovah" isn't technically god's name but that it's the most accepted form of YHWH? I noticed Roosters comment...what does "napp" stand for? Is that from jw literature?

What's most important is that you are honest with yourself. It's also so important to stay honest with your family. And you didn't say things out of anger, but out of LOVE. Personally, I would not let my children study with your dad...because whatever your dad teaches them will come from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Keep researching on here and you will see all the falsehoods they push on people (although it seems you've already found out much of it). Also, I noticed how you laughed to your sister as though it'd be rediculous that you'd have a Christmas tree secretly hidden. To me, that says you think Christmas is rediculous. While supposed *pagans* (Gasp!) started this practice, NOBODY today practices it that way. To many, it's all about having a set time each year to really bond with your family and be grateful for all that you have. Plus Christmas trees are beautiful! ;-) Sorry,I'm not trying to derail this post. My heart goes out to you because I know where you're coming from. And truth be told, many people who leave the jw's DO go to the complete opposite extreme and live their lives in a very negative way. You were correct in telling your dad that not all people are like that. The main thing is: IT'S UP TO YOU. Coming from such an extreme way of living, it is so easy to swing around and go to the other extreme. You will need to find a happy medium. It sounds like you feel confident in your decisions. Good job!

Saoirse, I was a jw for a very long time. After I left, I did just exactly what you speak of. I went in the complete opposite direction and hated ALL Christianity. But now I'd say I'm agnostic for now. ;-)
