**Question, did you actually knock on doors, or was announcing your intent enough to scare them off?** I never got to the door before they piled back into the car. The second time (and last time) one of the neighbors saw me doing my little thing with the group, and we talked after the car drove off. He said he would give me a call if they came around again because he enjoyed watching the show. We talked for about a half hour--it was a great Witness! :-)

What is the most OUTRAGEOUS thing you've ever seen an apostate do?
by GetBusyLiving inhey i was just wondering if some of you wouldnt mind relating some crazy stories of things that apostates have done to get attention of witnesses and break them out of the trance.
i would think right after the 'stay alive till '75' fiasco there must have been some really pissed off and vocal people!

Thanks for the info about LT having a link to his Public Talk. I just downloaded it and listened to the final 5 minutes. I'll bet that was the talk of the JW town in his part of the world! Way to go LT!!!

I enjoy going out in service when Witnesses come around. They're on to me now, and must work my neighborhood differently. Here's what I've done twice:
When I see them outside, I walk out and join the group by say, "Hey, how's it going? Are we doing door-to-door work or back calls?" I follow this up with, "I'll start this side of the street and tell the householder I'm shunned by Jehovah's Witnesses because I voted. You can show them from the Bible why you do that."
I did this a few years ago, and with another group about 3 months later. For some reason, I don't see them in the territory anymore. Both groups got into their cars and drove away. It felt great smiling and waving to them as they left.

What kind of Apostate are you?
by diamondblue1974 ini've been on this site now for a little while and think its brilliant and its been a tonic in getting things straight and for gathering research.
(thanks simon & ang).
in fact its difficult to get work done during the day because of reading posts on here.. a couple of months ago if someone wouldve asked me whether i was apostate i would have flatly refused partly because the indoctrination still has its effect even after a decade and the negative connotation attached to the word 'apostate' is still at the back of my mind.

Most people leaving one religion for another, or none at all, are not labeled "apostate." High-control sects and cult-like religions need to degrade members or ex-members not blindly following them. Terms like "apostate", "evil slave", and the like are used as a parting shot. I don't consider myself an apostate; just someone who walked away from following the Watchtower.
Labels are typically used to make someone look less than they really are. Groups like the Watchtower need to spread fear, and then hate--calling ex-members names is just one of the childish ways they do it.
In a way, I think saying I'm a "Former Member of the Watchtower Cult" is better than saying "Apostate."

by AK - Jeff incan anyone here point me in the direction of a copy of the talk or booklet online that can be printed?

Isn't the writer of that famous speech dead now?
You're right--Rutherford is dead, and they even managed to hide the location of his grave. If you were born when Rutherford was pushing the "Millions Now Living" new light in 1920, you would be 85-years old today. As God's earthly prophet, he should have proclaimed: "All Now Living Will Die." Had he done that, the Tower could have pointed to one prediction as truth.

Are some people REALLY better off in high-control groups?
by seattleniceguy inin holly's good-bye thread, quotes mentioned that he felt that some people were better off in high-control groups.
i've heard othes say similar things.. but i have a difficult time with this.
is it not true that high-control groups stiffle a person's emotional and intellectual development?

"They raise people from rung 1 to rung 2 and then handcuff them there." GREAT illustration; I think it answers your question, and sums up the various posts on the topic.

dostprefer -- This remind me of a person with a ruptured appendix seeking help at a hospital. He arrives with all of the classic symptoms; lower right abdomen pain, elevated temp, nausea, etc. The staff does an exam, starts an IV, gets some xrays, and blood work. Sure enough, everything is pointing to a ruptured appendix, and stat surgery must be performed or he'll die. In order to help manage the pain, he is given a drug. Within a few seconds he feels no pain, and has a euphoric feeling that all is well--in fact, he never felt better. He feels better off with this high-control drug, but is he REALLY better off? In a way, AlanF addressed this a few posts back. Many high-control religious groups give a feeling of all is nearly perfect within the group, and when that wears off, their religion is the only true religion--the Truth. Some followers will stay with that drug rather than have surgery. Indeed, surgery is scary, and the drug makes one feel sooooo gooooood.
