  The right's obsession with gays

  it's pretty funny to me the level of obsession with homosexuality that many in the conservative right wing have in the united states.

  i occassionally go to a news web site called world net daily, (www.worldnetdaily.com) which is a religious conservative news web site.

  nearly every day they have articles on gays and gay issues (of course, always negative coverage).

  The short summary is that those who display the most vitriolic homophobia are the ones who were most likely to be arounsed by gay porn.

  I couldn't agree more. I think homophobia is alive and well within many of the religious right because they struggle with their own sexuality. It's easier beating up on others than being honest about their own sexual needs/desires/questions.

  Doing this in the name of God helps cloud the issue, and close honest discussion. Loving relationships should be nurished by any religion that claims to follow a "loving God." I think the scripture is true that speaks about "knowing them by their works."

  The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer is a great read. Copyright 1951, and it's easy to find in most used bookstores; it might still be in print. It's about the willingness to join a cause or group from Christianity to modern nationalism. One can't help seeing the JW mindset while reading this enjoyable sociological study by Hoffer.

  I know a Witness who was working on a college degree and found the book in the LRC. He pulled it off the shelf and read it from cover to cover before leaving the library. Needless to say he's no longer under the Tower's control.

  my wife excitedly told me that she talked to the wife of an elder that just came back from.

  the special training for elders in upper state new york and that the elders are being told .

  to go back to their congregations and to get them ready for the great tribulation.. i said to her that is great news !!!!

  As ESTEE already said, this brings "flashbacks of 1975." I was an elder and remember having a part of the Service Meeting about '75 and getting as many as possible in before the big A. A special effort was made to get as many weak JWs and bible studies to that meeting so they could hear this special message from the Tower. Yep, that was over 33-years ago, and the Tower is still turning tricks with that line.

  Big News or rumor!

  a friend just informed me that the c/o in his hall will be instructing the elders that anyone with a child in college will be stripped of privileges in the hall.

  i am not sure if this is true this is just what i was told.

  it could be that it is only a campaign directed at him as he has some ties to ex-jw's and some how got found out.

  The rumor mill is always alive and active in the JW world. I guess it give the rank-n-file something to think about during the exciting meetings at the KH. :)
  
  I don't think the rumor is true, but it would be great if it was. That's the kind of stuff that awakens more than a few to start thinking again.

  Going to college....

  While still a JW I took a few college classes, and my eyes were opened after a little research. That was over 20 years ago, but I still remember reading some research articles on various cults and thinking, Jehovah's Witnesses are no different than other cults.

  Did you return to celebrating holidays?

  with this new light, i am starting to try and figure out what to do with my life and my time... now that the world is opened up for me to finally explore.. i have been wondering if i will return to celebrating the holidays with my 'worldly' relatives.

  my parents, brother, and in-laws are all witnesses.

  i have pretty much rejected the holidays say for 25 years.

  I celebrate various holidays, birthdays, etc not because they're holy or pagan, but because they're either fun or I feel the need to fit into what others are doing. For example, I wish others a Merry Christmas even though I'm not christian. I don't think it's important where holidays come from, but it is important how they are viewed today. Live in the day, and don't be ruled by a cult or the past.

  Yes, at this point in life I can't believe what I used to believe. When I stepped out of the Tower's fog and filters the house of cards fell quickly, but I still shake my head when thinking I used to believe their harmful fairy tale.

  I ATTENDED A JW FUNERAL YESTERDAY---WOW!

  back in 1959 i became best friends with a fellow who was instrumental in my becoming a jehovah's witness.

  yesterday i attended his mother's funeral.. from the time i was 12 years old i became a part of johnny's family and got to know his mother, jennie, very well.

  in fact, she was more instrumental in convincing me there was intellectual merit to the reasoning process of consulting the bible and drawing jw conclusions than any of the arguments johnny and i had.. fast forward a bit.
