I love moments like that, RubaDub, where you can casually work in a seed of doubt without being immediately marked for it. Saying "from our human perspective" makes it seem like all you're doing is showing how much smarter Jehovah is or something. Well done. :)

"The End is Closer Than You Think" came up at a party.
by RubaDub inwe were at a party (get-together in jw speak) and somehow the ones i was talking with changed the subject to a talk given by the co that "the end is closer than we think.".
i just sheepishly asked the group ... "i don't understand that phrase, "the end is closer than we think.
" i said my parents told me i would never go to school, then later that i would never graduate from high school, and that i would never get married.. then i mentioned my parents were expecting the end to be in 1975 ... my grandparents were expecting the end numerous times in the 1920's and 1930's.. so i very nicely asked, "isn't is more correct to say "the end is farther than we think?

I can't think of anyone I've completely deleted, but I do have some people blocked from most of my profile, and I also use the "Hide" feature when I get tired of seeing someone's posts. To me, that works just as well as deleting but without the dramatic flailing.

Twister (the game)
by Mickey mouse inwhen i was a teenager, twister was a popular game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/twister_(game).
we had a couple of elders who used to bang on and on about how bad it was in local needs talks.
they seemed convinced that if a group of young people were playing twister, it was bound to descend into a mass orgy.

There was an article in a 1973 Awake! that said that the game's history of providing soldier preparation, combined with its perceived violations of the command in Galatians to not be competitive or egotistical, make it inappropriate for Christians. They also suggested in the article that chess can make people become physically violent.
Like everything else JW-related, whether your congregation(s) chose to observe that unwritten rule or not was completely up to them. There's never any consistency with this stuff, so it's not surprising that some congregations are more lax about it. A lot of Witnesses have never even heard about the anti-chess warning.

Victoria Jackson
by linp24 inthis is probably the wrong area for this topic, but i have a question.
i have been watching just a bit of victoria jackson speaking at a couple of the tea party gatherings and also some of her tv appearances.
i have the feeling that she is engaging in a most profound form of irony.

In Live from New York, the SNL tell-all from several years back, her former coworkers made it abundantly clear that she is completely out of her mind in all respects and indeed not an act. Her own interviews in the book didn't help her defense.

Nope, disqualified on the basis of my vaginal disability. But I had way too many crushes on some of the ministerial servants who handled them, and I liked sitting somewhat towards the back in order to get a better view of them as they walked the aisles. ;)

The first eight or so seasons of The Simpsons can't be beat for me. But I'm also very fond of South Park, The West Wing, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (cheesy, I know), Futurama, King of the Hill, Mary Tyler Moore...a bit of a weird bunch, but there you go. :)

What do you say, if someone asks if you go to church?
by Bonnie_Clyde inclyde has a great answer.
he says, "no, i take my faith too seriously.
" he says that ends the conversation.

I jut say no. If you say it with the right tone, people typically don't ask follow-ups. And even if they do, I've got nothing to hide. Nope, I don't go. :)

That was never allowed at our game nights because apparently it promoted frottage, and teenagers aren't mature enough to not make jokes about the physical nature of the game. We were very restricted in which games we could play -- though, oddly, I can quite clearly remember chess being played at most gatherings.
Oh, the arbitrary bull that dictated my past life...

Do you Know of any JW Pedophiles who Currently Go Out in Service ?
by flipper inmy wife suggested this thread and i agree it's a good idea to put this out here to find out.
just wanted to give her credit for the idea.. most of the public have no idea that some of the jehovah's witnesses people calling at their door are a previously convicted sex offender or pedophile who may have served hard time in prison for their crime.
it would be interesting to have an informal survey here and get an idea of the sheer numbers of these child molesters who are out on the loose.. in your opinion - how would the public react if they knew that child molesters were regularly calling on their doors ?

Didn't the WTS institute an official policy of not letting jw abusers go door to door in 2002? If so, it would have bearing on any answers before or after that date.
If I remember correctly, they have their own special way of determining "sex offender" in regards to that policy, right? I think J. R. Brown said that it applied to convicted sex offenders and people with "excessive" violent pasts only. Can anyone clarify?

I had whole imaginary worlds I lived in, like other characters I could become, except not in the creepy sociopath way. ;) I also paid a lot of attention to the other people in the Hall and used to imagine up their life stories, especially about their secret lives. Sadly, I think the stories I imagined were far more interesting than the lives they really lived....
