"How to Write the Breakout Novel" by Donald Maass and a couple of novels about serial killers; all writing research. Tonights online research is determing the colors used on Japanese Battleships in world war II, the result will end up on the 1/700 model sitting in pieces on my desk.

No Child Left Behind Testing
by skeeter1 inaround the us, 6th graders (and alot of other grades) are preparing for this spring's standardized testing.
when "we" grew up, the standardized tests were straigh forward math problems.
the standardized math test is now only 16 questions long, but they are all long, drawn out word problems.

I just checked with my wife who has been an early childhood educator for 20+ years. She says a sixth grader should be able to do that.
An additional thought that I had a few minutes ago: you're doing your child a real disservice. Tell them its too hard and they can't do it, and they won't be able to do it. Give them paper, pencil, scissors, some sheets of paper and tell them to figure it out, and they'll figure it out in an afternoon. They will not only have that problem resolved but they'll know how to find the answer to all similar problems they encounter in the future.

Call social services, also check with the social workers at the local hospitals. If she is in fact elderly, medicare should cover most of it.

I'm with Kudra.
Standardized tests are crap, children aren't manufactured according to standards. Why would you test them that way?

Orangeburg Assembly Hall - designed to be sold as a future supermarket?
by cedars ini've just been watching a youtube video that reveals the new assembly hall in orangeburg, sc.. two things struck me when watching it.... firstly, everything is attributed to jehovah, right down to deciding the location where the hall is to be built.
"we examined over 300 properties," said one interviewee, "we were reminded that jehovah knew where the site was, we just had to keep looking and show him that we were persistent.
" other workers interviewed throughout the video attribute everything to god, as though it is impossible to build anything without divine direction.. here is the video.... .

I've been in real estate for a long time. Large retail buildings don't sell easily. Most of the chains (grocery stores, JC Penney, Sears etc) want to be in a mall that attracts lots of people. The stand alone types (Walmart) probably want to build their own store. And changing permits from a church to a retail outfit won't be easy most places, although I don't know about Orangeburg.
I laughed at the award for having a flat, level floor. That's like claiming you got an award for not totally f***ing up your job.

Another rumor about changes in Watchtower and Awake
by wannaexit init's only a rumor.
but we all know that sometimes rumors become a reality.. supposedly the public watchtower and awake magazines will be combined together and the two shall become one.. i wonder if the present 16 page "rags" are becoming an embarrassment.
they truly are rags of the lowest quality..

It would makes sense, and I sort of expected it when they went to two editions of the watchtower. It would be a lot smarter to have one magazine for the public and another for in house use.

I read a book a while back on the debunking the 9/11 truthers. The author made a good point that many if not most of these theories feed a pyschological need to impose order on a chaotic world. People want to believe that JFK was killed by the coordinated efforts of professionals because we don't want to think that any of us good be done in by one nut. The same sort of thing is the psychology behind the truthers.
I also think that the article lacked historical perspective, we've always had conspiracy theorists, when I was in Jr High-Highshool I can remember conspiracy ideas about JFK, ufo's, 100MPG cars blocked by oil companies, flouridation, etc.
I don't think political opposition counts as a conspiracy, or if it does every politician we've ever had as been the target of one.
